Mass Effect 3 SPOILER THREAD: LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYONE

So, the BSN is down, Mac Walters deliberately wanted the ending to cause 'lots of speculation', and now the fans' one glimmer of hope - the indoctrination theory - is dispelled.

Awesome.

Yeah, Bioware's one attempt to controlling the fan reaction (hinting that Indoctrination was planned all along) has now been proven to be full of crap.

They're now facing the fully operational wrath of the fan base.

That's because DA2 was a bad game in its entirety.
ME3 is actually good until the very end :(

At least from Mars to most of London.

It's not just ME3, It's the unprecidented investment over the course of all 3 games carrying through that's driving this, ironic.

The outrage on the BSN is probably from people who genuinely believe Walters spent 10 minutes scribbling crap down on loose leaf paper and that was what the entire ending was based off, when regardless of the abysmal quality of the ending this is certainly not what happened. A lot of writing takes conceptual form as scribbled notes and that is what we saw.

The outrage over the ending is BioWare's problem and Walters and co will have to rightly deal with it, but given the general level of IQ and, I'm guessing, low age cap on the BSN I assume most of them probably genuinely believe that was the ending ad infinitum.

The notes do show though how conceptually vapid and hollow the ending was. Quoting Matrix for thematic inspiration only makes it worse. I don't doubt you're right, though. I just think its not as immature as you're suggesting. Maybe not much more mature, but a least a little bit.

Gotta say, the reaction to all this is fantastic. I adore watching trainwrecks, and Bioware always seems to supply amazing fan reactions.

I'm glad I was crushed into forgetting about the series after Walters took the reigns on ME2. I'll play this some time in the future (I've read up on the ending, it's what I'd expect from these guys, so it's worth 20$ I suppose) and hope the drama keeps flowing until then. Lovely stuff.

Part of the problem is most people don't realize the dirty secret that big fans are generally more invested in a work than the author is.

Odds are that a huge fan of Mass Effect could probably easily stump Mac Walters on ME trivia.
The writer don't fucking own Mass Effect. Its a piece of IP merchandise. They are not entitled to ruin the ending of the franchise.

A fade-to-black with Shepard and Anderson chilling on the ground looking into the stars then closing their eyes and dying would've worked for me... then afterwards even some simple 2D pictures of what happens to your crew.

For example, if Paragon, photos of:

- Garrus and Tali together
- Donnelly and Adams together
- Krogan children running around
- Geth and Taurians shown working together to build a house or something
- A sad Liara (for my game) maybe with an Asari child who she named Shepard
- And then ones for all the other squad members, races and events

This would have accomplished both goals of Shepard dying and closure to all your squad mates and races in the galaxy.

That's all it would have took. That's not even a great ending because they would be all photos and half-assed but it would have been so much better.

Wait where did BioWare shut down the indoctrination rumors?

Gametrailers released an app that gave insight into the production of the ending of ME3, and the info in there implied that that vague ending was intentional so that people can speculate on their own without being given any definitive answers.

Very much like fallout's epilogue

I would have been cool with that.

Almost said that. A little lazy for nowadays, sure, but it has far more closure than the turd we got.

Wait where did BioWare shut down the indoctrination rumors?

The 'Final Hours' app shows the lead writer's rough draft of the ending. All that shit that happened at the end, that's what happens.

The ending was deliberately vague (fucked up) to cause 'lots of speculation'.

Wow, so the second Mac Walters' motivations for ending the Mass Effect universe like that are revealed, everything blows up and goes wrong and nobody respects him anymore.

He's a Reaper.

Pretty much. I thought the ending with Anderson and Shepard sitting together would have been the perfect place to end the game.

The last few pages have brought me much laughter and joy. I can always have my pretend ending, at least. And Bioware can get fucked and not have as much (or any) of my money anymore.

I thought that was just from all of the people complaining about how shitty it was?

Did they outright say "No, the indoctrination theory is incorrect"?

Like other people have said the app basically proves it. They wanted the specualtion what they didn't expect was the rage.

I think part of it is that you're dealing with the same audience that, very recently, saw George Lucas hammering out scripts in a weekend and this app bridged the association in their minds.

Seeing those notebook sketches (which, I agree, are certainly not the totality of writing or thinking done for the ending) probably feels to a lot of people like the seeing the behind-the-scenes Revenge of the Sith footage and hearing Lucas express to someone that he simply wrote "[they fight]" in for an ending and hoped the actors and choreographers would fill in the gaps.

Absolutely. It's a cocktail of their particular audience mixed with easily misinterpreted information.

He's a Reaper.

Its one thing to think that its a ploy for DLC, rushed, or slapped on.

Its another thing to find out it was thought up, planned, and delivered as intended.

It exploded in their face in full RGB spectrum.

Yeah, people aren't complaining about the lack of a proper end boss. In fact, ME2 probably could have done without one, as well.

To be fair, I completely agree with the sentence about the end boss.

Final bosses are classic good game design staples.

Look at what the alternative was. A super long cutscene with Anderson and TIM talking. Woo, it's not as gamey!

ME2 could have lived without a final boss. ME3 was worse for it.
