Anyone with kids, nieces, or nephews who plays on an iPad?

I just got an iPad2 for my nephew who is around age 4, he is often sick and has to stay in bed rest a lot. I want to give him some distractions, what games are popular with kids these days?

My daughter plays it a lot. She is 4. She has been pretty good with the ipad/iphone since she was about 2, so no need to worry about finding games he can play.

* Wheres my water, cut the rope and cover orange have always been big hits. You might think them too complicated for a four year old, but you'll be surprised how well they can do any how addicted they can get.

* Fruit Ninja or Vegie Samurai get enjoyed in short bursts.

* Play school art maker is an alternative that gets a heap of use (if he is the creative type).

* Train control is another one that can get some play.

Basically don't be afraid to pick a good game and go with it. By that age, they should be able to work it out. I would just avoid games with timed challenges, as these tend to put my daughter off. Anything she can work out without getting flustered is generally ok.

How are the controls on Fireball?

Unsurprisingly, not as good as a controller, but then a game like that never will be. It's simply made for another input device. One part of the controls I think is a nice touch, is that when you put your finger on the screen, you steer with a virtual joypad, but at the same time a dot appears near the protagonist and the further you move your finger away from the joypad, the further the dot moves away from the protagonist, in the same direction as you moved your finger. It gives you a visual indication of how far you're pushing the "joypad", instead of a tactile one a regular joypad would give, so you have a chance to know where you are in relation to the (joypad)center. Still not as good as a regular controller, but a clever touch none the less.

The way I see it is, I've spent more than enough time on the other Radiangames for very little money, so I'll keep buying the iOS releases as well to show my support. With that said I hope to see some future Radiangames made for the format from the ground up to take advantage of the touchscreen..

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I got all of them and I can't wait to see him having fun.

Looking through all those kids, family, and educational games sections I really had no idea what is "fun" for kids anymore.

Hi all,

iPod Touch 4 and iPad 1 owner here... been gaming on it off and on since Christmas 2010, and am making a conscious effort to really get into what unique experiences the platform offers. I've played most of the popular/mainstream stuff, as well as all the Cave shooters.

Right now I'm playing S:S&S and am really enjoying it. In Session III at the moment.

Are there other games that are as quirky and interesting as this one? Guess I'm interesting in adventure-style games or anything with a really unique aesthetic. This thread is vast, so I figure it'd be easier to just ask the question, get some responses, and get back to gaming. :)

Thanks in advance!

Mandatory iPAD experiences:

Osmos
Galcon and/or Eufloria
Waking Mars
Beat Sneak Bandit
Plants vs Zombies
Kingdom Rush
Land Air Sea Warfare

Some combination of these games manage to stay on my iPad (along with Super Brothers: Sword and Sworcery), whenever I'm rearranging or wiping off apps.

Slitherine/Matrix (a dedicated wargame developer/publisher) has released Battle Academy for iPad.

Now, it's 20 bucks, and xpacs (so far there's Market-Garden, Blitzkrieg France, and Operation Sealion) are 10 bucks each as IAP. But, this is a full port of a full wargame, which sells for 30 bucks + 15/xpac on PC.

This part's particularly interesting re: cross-platform play:
The revolutionary server-based PBEM++ Slitherine system completes the package, for a gaming experience that will certainly please both hard core wargamers and newcomers. This revolutionary system allows iPad, Mac and PC players to play against each other, and even allows you to play 1 turn on your PC at home, continue the same game on the iPad on the train to work and play a turn at work on your Mac, all without you having to do a thing - the server handles it all!

I think this is the first game that makes me want an iPad. I love turn-based wargaming. There's no iPhone version :(

Now, I haven't played the PC version myself, either, but I remember reading good things about it.

Here's a preview of the iPad version:

Here's an AAR of one of the xpacs:

Here's a review of the others:

I really hope people take note of this. I want to see more wargames on iOS.

I've been trying to get some games off the app store tonight but the game icon appears on my screen and it just says "waiting..." under it and progress bar never moves. It's been like this for the last few hours. Any idea why this is happening?

So I've been going through my purchased tab on my newly restored iPhone 4. Ive started redonwnloading games that I'll probably put on my new iPad....and I've noticed probably 6-10 games missing from the list that I bought when I got my 3GS.

Most importantly were two games I played quite a bit - let's golf (pretty sure this was a game loft game) and a zuma clone called stone loops( I think?).

I went to iTunes and couldn't find them on the store either! What's going on? Do apps just get pulled from the store for whatever reason and your shit out of luck if you purchased them before? Is that really the policy? If so, steam has really spoiled me in the DD world, this will be the first time I've been burned by something like this :/

GameLoft sale

All $1

Silent Ops
BackStab
Fast Five the Movie: Official Game
Sacred Odyssey - Rise of Ayden
Starfront: Collision
Spider-Man: Total Mayhem
Splinter Cell Conviction™
Iron Man 2
Assassin's Creed™ - Altaïr's Chronicles
Warplanes
The Adventures of Tintin™ - The Game
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation

I liked Adventures of Tintin. It's shallow sometimes, but they do some interesting things. I hated motion controls on iOS pre-gyroscope, but now I wish more games used Gyro. Tintin makes it optional, but it's pretty cool what they use it for.

On the other hand I finished Dead Space the other night, and found it pretty bland. It seemed artificially lengthened, and most of the game was just walking through hallways to hit a button, and fight monsters. Does Mass Effect Infiltrator improve on that at all?

Some suggestions from the "kid page" of my iPad:

- Lego 4+ is astoundingly simple but my four-year-old will play it all day.

- If he likes find-hidden-things games, there are a couple Where's Waldo apps.

- Machine World is pretty cool if he's on the older side of 4 (or has someone to help him with the controls).

- My PlayHome is basically a virtual dollhouse, but it's not really a girly thing. It's fun for boys to explore all the little things you can do in the house.

- Where's My Water is excellent if he has someone playing with him.

- Casey's Contraptions is a really great Incredible Machine type game, again if he has some help (it's too hard for any four-year-olds I've met).

- There are about a million book apps out there that he would probably appreciate. My 4YO can watch the two Monster At The End Of This Book apps over and over for an hour.

Sacred Odyssey is a very competent Zelda-like. I might just grab it!

Hello friends. I haven't been in the iOS thread in a while now, so pardon the blatant intrusion and shameless marketing.

We just put out a free distance runner called Presidents Run. You basically choose your candidate, run, jump, collect votes, purchase accessories and upgrade your powerups. It's not necessarily revolutionary, but it's free and it's got a decent amount of polish. It also features Zombie Washington as a premium character. We plan to support the game well over the next few months with new content. If you like it, buy the double votes option for $.99 to save up faster for a beer hat for Santorum.

It was a super accelerated project with a medium sized team that was a lot of fun to work on. I can give out more details if people are interested in hearing more. We've had a little trouble with the iPad 1 and iOS 5, and we hope to address that better in our first update. We also haven't seen it on an "iPad 3", but we'll have one in office tomorrow. I'd love to hear what you think about it and I hope you guys enjoy it. As always, feedback is welcome.

How is Chaos Rings Omega? I just got an Ipad 1 16GB today, and downloading the first game now since its on sale...but just noticed Omega (prequel?) is on sale as well...so figured I might snag that too if its worth it.

I just loaded up all your suggestions, looking into books right now too, thanks a lot.

I saw that yesterday while downloading DDP:R HD, in my case there just wasn't enough space and it kind of got stuck there (you can check space in Settings-General-Usage). Otherwise it might be the app store choking on it for whatever reason. Did you try tapping on it? I noticed that seems to pause and resume downloads. Otherwise just try restarting if it's not a space thing.

It should show up in Purchased, I know that was the case for me and some older EA games before (that have gotten sequels since). They weren't on sale anymore but they showed up under the Purchased area. I think Stone Loops had some legal stuff going on with it so that might explain that one but I'm not completely sure.

Oh, is Civ Rev on iPad different in any way to the iPhone version? Really shouldn't double dip..
I don't have the iphone version anymore, but did that one get the HD graphics update? They're basically the same game, though I find it plays much better on the ipad.

Okay, as weird as the game looks, New Star Soccer is THE SHIT. It's... I can't even describe it. It's just awesome, in a very weird and oldschool way. Everyone should get it for a dollar. It's MUCH better than it looks at first glance.

Ok this game is amazing. It's gotten to me to make my first IAP even though technically the IAP is the full game. Anyway BUY IT! It's like a Kairosoft game except instead of tapping on menus you level up urself by actually playing soccer and you get to manage ur contract, personal life etc.

What if I don't get soccer? The only soccer games I've gotten addicted to are the kairosoft one and inazuma eleven, which is more blitzball than soccer.

There's not much "soccer" involved, more a string of quick-time events that are like "aim there and tap!", you'll be fine. But seriously, this game has Kairosoft-addiction-potential for sure, judge yourself if that's good or bad. (for me, it's GREAT, it's an awesome game. The arcade mode is crappy though, the career is what it's at, and for a dollar, definitely worth it.) It reminds me a LOT of japanese browser flashgames for some reason, with the energy management... I can't help it, this game is too good for its looks.

My team won our first game in New Star Soccer and I scored a goal on a free kick. Yeah this game is going to be ludicrously addictive.

I cant find Pirates! on my phone though I thought I had it installed.
I cannot find it on the app store on the phone as well.

any link?

I've said it a couple of times in this thread by now but, apps that are violating Apple ToS or where the developer stops paying its developer license or if a developer decided to stop selling it in that region gets removed from the Store and purged from any purchase lists as if they never existed.

This also happens if you move store region with your Apple ID, all previous purchases in a previous region are purged from your account.

This is why you should always have your purchases copied to iTunes locally so you can access your stuff at all times.

but only people that have their iPad linked to iTunes on computer can install it right?
if you run your iPad from the iCloud youre fucked?

Is Career Mode the only IAP needed, or is the pitch and weather pack necessary too?

If you absolutely refuse to keep local copies of your apps via iTunes. Not talking device backups, you can still have that just in iCloud, then yeah you're fucked.

so if I do a cloud setup on my new iPad I still can connect it to my computer for app installs?

I would prefer to be able to do both local backup and cloud backup but when I tried it (alternating backups between computer and cloud) on my old iPhone 3GS it only lead to problems
