Update:

@danpompei: Colts agree to terms with safety Tom Zbikowski. Chuck Pagano gets one of his former Ravens.

What would your state of mind be? Frankly, I think Smith is so used to not having anyone believe in him to do anything other than manage a game from an organizational level, it would probably be like any other day.

I like the prospect of Kaep learning from Peyton. If we don't get him though and we do end up signing Alex, will Alex's confidence be back in the toilet?

He should understand.

Looking back on his most recent interview, it seems like he was aware that there was potential interest in Manning.

I just find it funny that Smith toiled in mediocrity for years and was given all the chances in the world. But after his best season as a pro so far, all of a sudden he's on the verge of getting dumped. My only concern would be if that the Niners don't land Peyton, Alex will probably be skeptical of anything Harbaugh says..

Alex has respect for Peyton and I think understands what he represents. He'll take some offense, but not like it would be if they looked at Matt Flynn. Plus, his agent is the same as Peyton's. I imagine he was aware of this and his agent discussed it with him and how he felt about it.

Weren't Zbikowski and Nakamura pretty solid regulars for the Ravens at the safety position (opposite Reid)? Who else do they have back there now that both of those guys are gone?

None of his backups were even highly touted right?

Maybe not, but I read an article that talked about how his backups didn't really learn anything behind Manning. Here's an excerpt:

That said, I was at Colts camp last summer and wrote a story about what it’s like to be Manning’s backup. In it, I spoke with several of his backups over the years and found some consistent themes – they almost never took snaps in practice, and they didn’t even have a chance to approach Manning’s depth of understanding of the offense.

Mark Rypien, who played behind Manning in 2001, called it “probably the best and worst job in the NFL.”

“You know you're never going to see the field, but you're going to get a paycheck," he said. "If you want to be a competitor and you're a young kid waiting in the wings, it would be hard.

"For an old guy like me who was just there as an insurance policy, it was great. I got a chance to be around a lot of young kids and had an opportunity to be in an organization that was heading in the right direction."

Rypien, a former Super Bowl MVP with the Redskins, added: "You really couldn't learn the offense quite like Peyton does because you're only going to get a small percentage of what he has in his head. And most of the things he has in his head, you'll never be able to learn."

Ravens have been getting pilfered the last two days. I'm not sure what their plans are because they don't seem to be looking at FA defensive guys. Somehow I'm sure this all Lee Evans' fault.

SF should be the front runner at this point. The only thing Denver has over them is more cap space, and John Elway. They (SF) are a more complete team right now. Road to the Superbowl is also a tad tougher in the NFC. Either way.

Go ahead and find one. The myth of the dream team is becoming larger then life. 2 players said it, no one in the media, or any fans thought that. People thought they would be improved, but even before the season started everyone was talking about the Packers repeating.

Seriously. Everybody was all over the Packers still winning last year. This is a WHOLE different situation.

If he goes to San Fran, they will be the greatest favorites of all-time (who didn't win the Super Bowl the previous season) to win it all. Sounds like a ton of pressure to me. I personally would rather go to Tennessee because it's A. Pretty good team B. Great running back C. Great O-Line with O-lineman as the head coach. Not to mention everybody loves him there.

But then again, I'm a bit biased......

Sort of like the Pats of '07? The underlying point is that everyone that hops into this thread and says "oh man, that put them right over the top! They'll win an SB with xx" is saying nothing at all.

No team is unbeatable. Period. Top seeding, media favorites or perceived superiority means only so much in the NFL.

They could have sucked for Luck. They had everything going for them. The Colts even won a couple games.
Miami only has themselves to blame for the mess they're in now.
They don't even have any receivers for a QB to throw to now that Marshall is gone.
Just Davone Bess and Brian Hartline. Even Fasano is better than those guys.

At receiving? First off Davone Bess is the most under-rated wideout in the NFL. He's been on teams with terrible QBs that would rather throw to the monster Brandon Marshall than anything else (see Jay Cutler). Disregard anything this guy says. He is an imposter. No chance he watches Dolphins games if he doesn't respect Da Bess.

Doesn't he favor AFC teams over NFC though because of Eli?

Dammit Peyton. Take our deal!

I get your point, but it's a completely different situation.
The Patriots were considered a good team; explosive offense and a decent, smart, veteran defense that simply found ways to win games - but they had been good for a long time and getting on a roll was just as likely as them losing a game.

I agree that ALL teams are beatable, but SF acquiring Manning would be a big deal and would make them a massive favorite, which is what he stated.
Not that they're a 100% lock for even being in the SB, let alone winning it, but a favorite to win.

I'm not personally sure how well their offense fits what Manning does, but he'd still make them a better team....and well, they were great last year with AS running the show.

Again, not making any claim that they'll win it, but it would set them up to not be a surprise like last year.

Oh snap.

Backus vs McNeil. Go.

detroit Free press said:
"Of course, they have Jeff Backus, and he's been a great pro for many years for them here," McNeill said. "Of course I have issues, and it is a business here, so if they're going to part ways, I would love to come play left tackle for Detroit. But it is a business, so you have to wait for them to make decisions first, and I'm pretty sure they have a lot more commitments and time put in already with Jeff, so he'll probably be their first priority."

Damn why u so salty already? Do you know what the term favorite means? It doesn't mean a guarantee. It just means on paper this is the best team. I doubt we get peypey anyways!

Mike Klis of the Denver Post has now updated his report and said that what Manning is actually seeking is a contract like the one he signed last year with the Colts, which was for five years and $90 million, with a whopping $61.8 million in the first two years.

Fuck him, does he want the money or to win?

If I were in Mannings shoes I'd have trouble not going full Kenny Powers. Not proud of myself, but that's how it is.
