NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

The whole Smith thing is just strange, he's not really a WCO QB, I know Flynn was with the Dolphins to about 8pm last night negotiating.

The thing is that he thought SF offer of 3/24 was too low I just can't see the phins surpassing that. Also rumors that Seattle wants him over Flynn as well.

Nothing would please me more than to see Smith sign with Miami and Peyton go to Denver, leaving SF with Colin.

Alex has been dicked around his whole career by the Niners. This season he was treated like he's going to be resigned for sure (shit he caddied for Harbaugh just a couple weekends ago), and all of a sudden we go after Peyton Manning. Dude probably has had enough. I hope he finds success wherever he lands, always thought he was screwed over by us until this year he finally got a real offense around him.

Alex Smith isn't garbage. People should already accept that he's a top 15 QB, easily. And as Rodgers has already stated, Matt Flynn's best case scenario is being a top 15 QB. But everybody knows hes garbage.

Well, but there's certainly no other place where he could be as successful as with the Niners. He has pretty much zero leverage.

Poor guy.

This agent business is getting shady.

Alex Smith is urged not to sign, then Peyton comes in and takes the job from him?

Just saw in one of the Miami blogs that Smith is considering firing Condon. So he's not too happy with the situation either.

Hard to tell at this point. Flynn clearly wants more money than the Dolphins are willing to give. Is this a power play to get Flynn to cave? Or do the Dolphins have no preference and would happily sign Smith? Smith is semi-interesting because he does seem to have finally figured things out and he is only a year older than Flynn. Smith and the Dolphins could just be using each other to get what they want (Flynn to cave and the 49ers to step it up).

No, not 'easily.' Even top 15 is debatable.

I think thats about all the guys who had a better season last year than Smith (and I wouldn't agree with a couple of the ones I listed). I don't really think you could argue anybody else to be honest.

I don't think he's that great but the notion he is garbage is ridiculous. Garbage is reserved for the Fatmans, the Sanchez, the Bradfords of the league. 49ers are playing with fire right now and they could get burned pretty easily.

Well I guess that's the end of our Peyton hopes, gg Niners.
Denver Post has all but moved on too, their tone is completely different lol.

Last year? Definitely top 15. Unfortunately he has a whole careers worth of shit prior.

I agree with Eznark here. I'm a homer so I think he's going to be a consistently good player, but he only has one solid season under his belt. He's still only 27, so he has a lot of time to prove that he can be a top 15 QB in the NFL season after season (personally, I think he can get higher on the list).

what makes you think that? It's been seven years.

There's the key right there. I don't think he's garbage at all--I just think it's not "easy" to argue he's top 15.

One year of not garbage doesn't make up for all previous years of garbage. As soon as they balance out, I'll consider him not garbage.

Its been 7 years yes, but does anyone outside of San Francisco truly understand how bad the 49ers were on offense under Nolan and Singletary.

I've seen pop warner teams that ran better offensive systems then what those two numbnuts ran in San Francisco.

I'm not saying Smith is going to turn into Brees, Manning, Brady or Rodgers, but he is a capable starter in this league. Last season is probably about what you're going to see for his career, but he's not this all out piece of shit that people think he is.

Sounds fair to me. He was decent last year--will be interesting to see if he does it again.

Well, since Jimmy Raye got fired (the worst OC in football), in 23 games Alex has 28tds/8ints, and in his two playoff games he had 5td/0int and a rushing TD. He hasn't thrown an interception since Thanksgiving against the Ravens (which is 7 games, including 2 in the playoffs). He's a very cautious player, but in my book that's a good thing. He's rarely going to throw interceptions and that should always help his team win games.

Jeff Darlington tweeted something similar but also said that he sensed the Phins weren't as high on Flynn as people thought. On the other hand I could very well see this be some type of Leverage game.

Even if they are truly interested in Smith I just can't see him signing any where without both a trip to Seattle and before finding out where Manning goes.

Patiently awaiting the FMT fallout if the 49ers lose little hands and miss out on the Manning sweepstakes. That being said, I can't see a better situation for Manning than the 49ers.

I'm always fascinated by the uncanny-valley type popularity dip that athletes take as they get rise higher and higher in the ranks.

Great high school prospect, could go division I! ==> Wow he's going to be a starter for a major conference program! ==> Hes a star and could be drafted! OMG OMG OMG ==> Holy shit this guy is garbage! I can name like 15 guys in the world better than him! ==> Okay now he's good again! Straight cash homey!

When was the last time there was this much QB movement in the offseason? I mean, I know Kolb and T Jackson moved last year, but this is some crazy musical chairs going on. Gonna be interesting to see which team doesn't have a chair to sit in.

Jay cutler had better numbers even after going down, and palmer had better stats too...i think. :/

I just watched a highlight film of mario manninham from high school and it really occurred to me in every highlight film I have watched of a players high school highlights that the hilariously bad angles players will take and how easily they are juked.

At this point, why doesn't Smith just sign the 49ers offer?

Don't know, it could be a multitude of things, but that ship has sailed.

Now that the 49ers are in the running for Manning, Smith isn't going to sign the current offer. He knows that he's not the 49ers top choice, so if he comes back to SF, he's going want more money.

If the 49ers lose out on Manning, they're probably going to lose out on Smith as well, or they're going to overpay for him.

It really has changed. Shannon Sharpe is pretty convinced that he is going to TN. I was excited about the prospect of Manning. Right now I'm hoping that Tebow improves enough to beat out whatever competition they bring in against him. It should make for an interesting offseason/preseason.

Sounds like SF might be out of the race for Manning. Smith visiting Miami. I don't think it happens but if SF loses out on both QBs, what do they do?

If Manning goes to Tenn and Smith leaves, I can see SF going after Hasselbeck. No way the Titans keep him if they sign Manning.

That's what I was thinking. Nightmare scenario has to be Smith in Miami, Flynn in Seattle and Manning in Denver. That leaves zero attractive options available.
