Ask yourself this: Should I go do my driving test with a car that isn't street-legal and could get me fined?
no

Yeah I know, it's stupid. But I don't have 40 something dollars to fix it atm. already scheduled the day for the test.

Not unless you are in a state that does an inspection. In Florida I just got in the car and drove. Though a horn is kind of important thing to have, and can be easily replaced without taking it to a shop.
e: beat.

:/ pretty much.

not that you guys give a damn, friend is letting me use his car.

Is it possible to ripen fruit using a UV lamp? I have a UVA/B lamp and was wondering if it would work.

I just asked my partner who is a restaurateur and he said "no, not successfully".

However, he did say that the best way to prematurely ripen fruit is to put it in a brown paper bag and ideally put it in your airing cupboard [if you have one]. Obviously you do not put them in the fridge in either case.

If it is an avocado that you wish to ripen put it in a brown paper bag with a banana and that speeds it up even more. The banana trick doesn't work with other fruit though apparently.

Good luck with the test! Knock 'em dead!*

So I just installed ANNO 2070 on my PC and for some reason now my windows task bar no longer shows up at the bottom of the screen whenever I have ANYTHING open full screen. Anyone know how to fix this?

What's the best cleaning of the teeth routine - order for brush, mouthwash, floss?

Do you get offended when someone responds to your text an hour or so later?

In Judaism, what's the difference between a cohen and a rabbi?
A Kohen is a descendant of Aharon (Aaron) and the only people that are allowed to perform the avodah (temple service).

A Rabbis is just someone who has studied extensively and passed an exam to show their knowledge of Jewish law and then been conferred with smichah.

In Judaism, what's the difference between a cohen and a rabbi?
A rabbi is a teacher of Torah, in the most basic form. Today, they tend to be the ones leading services and taking on other priest-like responsibilities in the Christian sense of the word, even though any certified Jew can be the one to do this.

Cohen/Kohen is just the word in Hebrew (כוהן) that means 'priest' (i.e. it could refer to a gentile priest as well). A Jewish Kohen is not like other religions' priests. They have some priestly duties and a certain status that is probably only recognized by Orthodox Jews. These things are somewhat formal, ceremonial, and obscure. Furthermore, to gain that priestly status, they have to be patrilineally descended from Aaron in the first place.

A Kohen is a descendant of Aharon (Aaron) and the only people that are allowed to perform the avodah (temple service).
I don't think that's true.

Continuing from my previous question, can someone give me advice on my rough copy essay? I made the thesis and the three main body paragraphs. Im pretty sure im missing a concluding sentence on each main body paragraph but is there anything else that im really messing up on?(Structure, analysis of quotes, etc.) If you guys have the free time to look over it that is, I dont want to be some beggar of some sort. Just want some advice.

Depends how popular the forum is. All more sub-forums do is needlessly segment conversation which causes less people to participate.

Sort of like how about half of GAF doesn't seem to like the Community forum and call it 'the place where threads go to die' so they never visit it or participate in those threads.

I hate the community forum. I never remember its there so I forget about all the threads in it.
I'd personally rather they get rid of it or at least allow us to somehow choose if it shows up in either the OT or Gaming sections. Like a check box in applicable threads that, if checked, would have them show up in Gaming or Off Topic. At least that way we could manage what forums we see, you know?
I'm not sure thats possible, though.

That all being said...

Any Xcode folks here know how to get the iPad simulator to display in retina mode? I'm on Lion and running the latest version of Xcode, but when I test my app, it displays it in iPad 1 & 2 resolution. I'm a complete noob in Xcode, it should be noted. haha.

A few years ago, there was an awesome LOST fan made trailer by some French dude. Everyone was so hyped up they could not believe it was fan made, does anyone know what that guy, or the trailer, was called. He got banned from Youtube I believe.

I'm about to order a Synology DS411J (8TB) NAS but will I be able to use it with both Windows and Macs?

Will I just connect it with an Ethernet cable to my routher, and then I can wirelessly access it through my MacBook Air, Windows computer, Mac Mini etc. ?

I think I'll order today if so.

Tl31bl.jpg

Do you guys know if I can use one of the USB ports on this one, to connect it directly to my Mac Mini through a USB cable? Because I will have some of my movies on there, but would like it to be transfered by cable instead of through a wireless connection.

Is that possible?

If it can do it, then I'll order it ASAP.

The USB ports only accepts external storage, some printers and USB sound cards for use with AudioStation. I am pretty sure that it is not possible to make the Mac Mini think that the NAS is an external HDD (which is what I think you want to do).

But since the NAS should be connected to your network switch/router, is it not an option to also connect the Mini to the same switch/router?

But there's not enough Ethernet ports on the router. Can I buy somekind of HUB with more Ethernet ports? =/

I just ordered the Synology by the way. But I don't think it's sufficient to stream movies wirelessly from the NAS to the Mac Mini.

In that case your looking for a simple network switch such as this one right here. I'm pretty sure that that one suffices for your needs but please look a bit into it/visit your local computer shop for better advice before ordering.

I fancy a Miyazaki movie. Which one should I watch that isn't called Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away?

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Alternatively if you want to watch something even better than Mononoke/Spirited Away that should get FAR more recognizition:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time by Mamoru Hosoda

Is it jsut me or does the back button on google chrome suck? It seems to never work properly. Is there a fix for this if it is indeed an issue?

Pretty sure it's just you.

Floss -> brush -> mouthwash.

No of course not. Not everyone is married to their mobile! I may not reply to a text for days at a time if I haven't turned mine on. No-one seems to take any offence with me.

I floss, then use mouthwash to wash out all the crap that was dislodged, and then brush to polish.

Mouthwash is generally designed to continue working in the mouth after the initial use, I believe.
So you may wish to consider rinsing out your mouth with plain water after the flossing, then brushing and then using the mouthwash. Although asking your dentist/hygienist for their advice would probably not be a bad idea :).

I've just bought myself a new 2.1 set up for my laptop however in the near future I'm planning on building a new pc and running it through my TV. It's an LG 32lc56 from a good few years back and for some unknown reason, doesn't have a headphone jack.

It has a 3.5mm jack on the back next to the DVI port so I assume that it will work when it's on that setting. I understand that I'm unlikely to ever get the sound coming through the speakers when it's on TV mode as the freeview box is inbuilt but I was wondering if there'd be a way to get the sound to come through the speakers when I'm playing my ps3, which is through HDMI... I'd assume not as HDMI carries both signals although as the TV is quite old, could I run it through component and get a 3.5 - RCA and just use that? That would however potentially leave me with a lower quality picture though right? Also, I'm guessing that when the sound is coming through the speakers, it wont come through the TV anymore?

I think it might be just you. Maybe nuke it and re-install, to see if that fixes the problem.

I was describing a problem I've been having to a friend yesterday:

You push the back button but it stays on the current page and sort of hangs like it's 'loading' the previous page, so you push back again and it sends you back a second page, overshooting the page you wanted to be on. So you push forward to get to the page you originally wanted to get to. Probably happens once or twice a day.

And I've only been using Chrome for like a month so this isn't something that's cropped up over time..

Howl's moving castle was pretty good.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Castle of Cagliostro.

PM is my favorite but I find Ponyo to be very charming.
I think I'll go for Nausicaä, but I'll look up the other suggestions. Thanks!

Had the same thing happen on Firefox and IE. Always thought it had something to do with the site I went back to automatically redirecting me to the page I came from since it mostly happened on sites with multiple tlds (google.com -> google.nl etc.).

if the devil punish bad people, that means he is a good person?

:P

Doing a good thing doesn't automatically make you a good person if, for example, you do it out of selfish purposes. If you want for a more trollish question: if God created us and is omniscient and all knowing do we actually have free will?
Please don't bother answering that, it will likely not end well.

I can imagine that's the case for alcohol-based ones (though none of the dentists I know recommend them), but with the one I use it doesn't specify. All it says that if you use it after brushing, rinse with water first.

there was a thread i've read like 2 or 3 moths ago about which are the best things that you should spend money in (like bricolage tools, audio equipment etc) but i can't find it.
Anyone has a link?

I don't know if there is a thread about "Movies you remember but names you don't" but I am really trying hard to remember this movie.

I think it is very old, the story basically involves this guy (Matthew Broderick), at the begining of the movie, the husband or the fiancee is hit by a car and dies at the same day he knew his wife/fiancee is pregnant, somehow (Matthew Broderick) visits his house and has the husband/fiancee's memories.

It's a Comedy, by the way.

Please HELP.

There is a thread for that.

BTW, that movie sounds awful. If I was gonna write something like that, I'd call it MOURNING SICKNESS.

Is there any remarkable difference between Ethernet cables? I bought a cheap one at 20m for like $20 for my coming NAS.

Oh, and another thing, is it possible to buy some kind of machines, that can tell me how much electricity I'm using?
I have a feeling I'm using a lot and I would like to save on it.

There are 3 different types (Cat5, 5e and 6) depending on length and type. Cat 5(e) is for "normal" ethernet and Cat6 for Gigabit Ethernet. However this doesn't mean that you MUST use Cat6 if your making a gigabit network. Cat5e works great too and Cat5 to a slightly lesser but still very acceptable degree. Length of the cable doesn't matter as long as it's <100m.

So no it doesn't really matter.

Something like that. Your local computer/tech shop should have one in stock if they are any good.

So a fast food place just overcharged me by $7.00. But I didn't realize it until I got home and saw my receipt. The cashier even verbally said the correct amount, so it was quite a surprise when I saw my receipt later.

How do I handle this? I am not going to go back to the place now over $7.00. But I will be going by there tomorrow.

Is there any way to get my money back? And without making an embarrassing scene? It's word against word after all.

Paid with a debit card if that matters.

Two wrongs don't make a right!!!!

[I grew up hearing that phrase :/. One doesn't hear it much nowadays.]

Not that it matters since the Devil doesn't exist anyway! :P

Interesting, thanks :). Do they actively suggest that you don't use alcohol based ones? If so, I am curious as to why. My dentist suggested that I use Listerine and I just checked the ingredients and it does in fact include alcohol. I am on the wagon too! :o

Well I expect if we reduced many beloved movies down to a plot like that we would probably say the same thing :).

Does the receipt itemise the individual products of your order as well as the final amount you paid? If so then surely you just need to show them the receipt to prove the discrepancy to get a refund? Or am I missing something?

What are some of the better British beers (doesn't matter what kind)

What beer(s) do most British people drink .. regardless of where it comes from.

I've heard two different reasonings:

1) Alcohol kills indiscriminately. Your body is an ecosystem of bacteria, and the different kinds keep each other in check. If you kill the "good" bacteria, you open the door for "bad" bacteria to come in.

2) Alcohol dries up your mouth which can lead to its own set of issues (I'm unsure if this is bacteria related as well).

And yeah, Listerine is a poor man's alcohol :lol

Is there a thread here for suggestions on which TV series are considered "must watch"? Breaking Bad, The Wire etc. I thought there was but cant find it.

I drink Boddingtons.

It's a pale ale (or 'Bitter' as it's called over here). I like it.

Have you tried Old Speckled Hen? That is a pale ale and is rather nice :).
