Guild Wars 2 - Understanding the gem system (very nice fan article about the micro-transaction system and economy)

The whole idea of adding new weapons into the game further down the road has me excited for the possibilities. It is a much better way to put a fresh look on an older profession rather than just getting a few new spells each expansion.

Also not sure on Paragons, I never really played GW1. I might have to look into them.

I was surprised they didn't have spears initially; the idea of pole weapons with their significant reach makes more sense in a game like GW2, where positioning and movement is so vita. That's why I think eventually we'll see them in, possibly with mounts and mounted combat (which they said they'd like to implement at some point). It would probably function like the Underwater weapon slot; they add a new "Mounted" slot and whenever you're on some kind of mount, you auto-switch to a Lance / Spear / Whatever. Could even throw in Yumi (long, asymmetric bows of Japanese origin which are designed to be used from horseback) for Rangers.

There's also Whips (one-hand weapon), and with those come flails (two-handed) and scourges (off-hand, probably caster-like since it's more of a torture implement than a weapon).

Oh, and there are no crossbows either. Might see Heavy and Light variations as well as little pistol-sized crossbows (imagine thieves dual-wielding them). Might be a nice overlap between engineers and rangers (since they are clearly divided on Guns/Bows).

As for Paragons, I've never played one either (My GW experience both began and ended with Prophecies), but they fit my mental requirements of needing heavy armor (The GW Wiki lists their armor as "A mix of metal and leather, inset with ivory, mother of pearl, and other semiprecious materials. ") and using spears. I like balance, and there only being 2 "Soldier" professions when there are three in the others makes a primal part of me that craves order twitch).

any GAFer's get in the closed beta for this weekend?

Please let me know what server you will all be on, etc. Ventrilo info, etc.

I used to play a lot of Guild Wars 1 back in the day, was on a top 5 guild (PlanB, and ThunderCatz lol)

The first rule of GW2 Beta Fight Club is...

For what it's worth, the info for the GAF Mumble server is here; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=399065. I don't think even discussing it on there is exceptionally wise, and I wouldn't discuss it any more than you already have in the thread since GAF is accessible to the public. Not sure how they might find you, but you're breaking the NDA by mentioning that you got in.

Just sayin'

TERA is awesome, what's up with the hate? GW2 is overhyped as fuck.
Hypersexualization of a race that's pedotastic played a huge part in my running the other way from TERA:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIMfN345r8A#t=2m18s

I don't know what's worse: the creep in the video, or the creeps that created that race in the game to cater to people like the creep in the video.

More on topic, I'm starting to reconsider the collector's edition purchase for Guild Wars 2. Given the cash shop in the game, I think I'd be better served spending $90 on cash shop items than I would on the CE with stuff I'd likely never use. Or I could spend that $90 on important real-life things. Choices!

That's....just....creeepy..........

"The sway..heh...look at that sway" Wow

Edit:I seriously can't stop watching this video just because of how creepy the guy is.

The Pre-Purchase explicitly states that there's a 3 day head start. That isn't definitive, but there is a three-day weekend coming up soon for Memorial Day. If the headstart begins on May 26th and runs through the 28th (Memorial day), then it would fit the traditional Tuesday launch date too. I'm hopeful it'll happen.

That would mean 1 or 2 beta events for the pre-order people. Seems a bit low considering that in the FAQ they use the plural to describe the events. May doesn't really seem likely to me :(

This is also an issue for me too.

The number of people defending the Elin is quite frankly shocking.

facepalm.gif at the video there. The commentary is quite creepy (he laughs like a pervert), but the race itself is pretty off-putting too. I seem to recall being put off by a lot of the anime-style design decisions in TERA (and Korean-developed MMOs in general, Aion was pretty bad too).

As for the Collector's Edition, I know I'll flip through the artbook once or twice a year at the most, put the statue/prints up somewhere in the office and admire them once in a while, and listen to the soundtrack disc quite a bit. I wish there was a little extra in-game stuff to separate the Deluxe Digital from the CE, but overall I think what's in there is worth it.

I also like the idea that I'm showing my support for the game by ponying up for the fan-version

I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong and I know wishful thinking plays a strong part in my Memorial Day Weekend launch window, but it does fit, somewhat. I also wouldn't be surprised if we have more than one Beta event per month.

Wow. Just.....wow.

I'll pass on any Korean based MMO...in regards to TERA. Aion was the last straw.

Mark my words, the first class to be added in will be the Paragon.

So many of the professions already sort of 'cover' the pre-existing GW professions that it's hard thinking of any others to add. Monk clearly merged into Guardian, Ritualists don't feel strong enough to have their own GW2 profession, honestly. Dervish might be really cool, but the "Holy Warrior" thing seems to fall into Guardian again, with the Earth and Wind magic going to Elementalists. Even if you think of them as "Melee casters", they kind of fall into the GW2 Mesmer's domain.

Definitely Paragon first, or some variation of them. They could theoretically merge them with Dervish since both draw power from the divine. I'm not familiar enough with the Lore, sadly, to say how well they congeal.

Might be interesting to have Spears (Main hand), Halberds (Two hand), Scythes (two hand caster), Sickles (Off-hand) and Javelins (off-hand ranged) all pushed as new weapons in that expansion though.

The main trick of Ritualists is summoning stationary spirits, which is pretty much what an Engineer does (or can do since it's optional). Would love for Ritualists to come back though; I've loved the concept ever since Dark Age of Camelot introduced the Animist. Mushroom power :3

This is also an issue for me too.

The number of people defending the Elin is quite frankly shocking.

General chat in game was creeeeepy in the amount of Elin defending or justification.

Someone even said he'd think it was normal to have sex with one because they're 100 year old creatures or something.

It was one of those loss of faith in humanity days for me.

Your avatar sums up my reaction quite well.

RE:Other classes. I don't know any others that are in GW or even in the lore, but another caster would be nice. Just sucks that Elementalist and Necro pretty much cover most the bases.

I was more annoyed by the people constantly bitching about Elins and summing up every person who rolled one a creep. Though it was quite enjoyable to see them get rolled by them on the PvP server I was on and see further crying.

And no, I rolled a High Elf. I'm all about those pumpkins.

Eh, general chat discussion in any MMO is bound to be filled with endless bitching.

I don't think everyone who rolled one is a creep. Their size advantage in PvP is obvious. That video posted above is a pretty clear indicator that the creeps do exist, though.

Oh no doubt.

lol at gem system, wait until they realize it will be a gold sellers heaven, good luck with the gem system Anet....

You do realize that like EVE, the price of Gems will come to an even amount and will only fluctuate ever so much based on demand. So 1 Gem might = 1,000 Gold right? Well gold farmers can buy as much Gems as they want, but they're only going to sell for the going rate which is exactly what they spent to buy them in the first place. Hell, that's assuming you can even sell back Gems you bought via Gold. Then people aren't going to risk buying Gold through farmers when they can buy Gems through ANet and sell them on the Market which is 100% safe for your bank account and your game account. Then you have no secure peer to peer trading which will kill off probably 90% of any trade spamming in chat since it'll stick out like a sore thumb when everyone is using the Market to trade. Then on top of that, by design the game seems built to kill off gold farming as it's very unpredictable in where enemies will be, I mean sure you got your random bear or what have you that's always going to be out in those spots, but it's highly unlikely farming that bear is going to be optimal for a farmer, and then you take into account that you can't just put down a macro and afk like other games cause the mobs will kill you. Gold farming will still exist without a doubt, but with all of these things working together, they've pretty much destroyed a lot of what makes that entire market tick.

Agree so HARD

Let's hope so, or else the game will forever be terrible.

I imagine any class they add will be differentiated from the others. With this in mind the Paragon if added in will undoubtedly be different from the Paragon of old. Out of all the potential classes to be added in I want to see the Paragon added in the most.

Those weapon ideas are good, I wonder what kind they would add if we get a Cantha expansion.

RE:Other classes. I don't know any others that are in GW or even in the lore, but another caster would be nice. Just sucks that Elementalist and Necro pretty much cover most the bases.

The only other major "Magician" types left are Summoner and Priest, and I don't think there's really any room for those in GW2. I'd love to see a Blood Mage-esque class in GW2, but that sort of falls under the domain of necromancy (life taps, organ-harvesting, symbiote-slinging, etc.).

Maybe a magician that can morph into stuff, but that seems far too gimmicky.

Nicely said. People flip out over the smallest details without thinking of the big picture in a rational manner.

Those weapon ideas are good, I wonder what kind they would add if we get a Cantha expansion.

I'd hate to see them just slap in stuff like "Katana" when that's clearly just a different model of sword. The aforementioned Yuri would fit if it were a horseback-only weapon though, otherwise it's just another model for a bow.

Fist weapons (including Katars and claws) might make for an interesting weapon choice, especially if the Cantha expansion adds a kung-fu class (preferably not called a Monk to avoid confusion with the GW1 Profession).

....

Ugh. I just realized that if ANet does a Cantha expansion, the WoW Fanboys are going to say they're ripping of Pandara. That makes me sad.

Rift was terrible.

Rift was especially bad, even after Trion took measures to fix it.

And it was still going strong in WoW last time I played (early Cata), and they were getting more and more inventive about it (arranging level 1 corpses to form web addresses, etc). And despite all the additional security Blizzard has tried to implement, there's still a steady stream of account hacking going on.

A lot of WoW players are already saying Pandaren are ripping off Kung Fu Panda.

With that in mind I have no doubt there would be some equally dumb enough to say this too.

Of course. Don't you know that EverQuest ripped off WoW?

I'd like to see a bard or minstrel type class.

I'd like to see a bard or minstrel type class.

Bard classes get so much hate, but I'll be damned if I didn't love having them along in Vanguard. They were also pretty useful in LotRO.

I think people have trouble getting past the idea of a bard supporting the group by singing or playing an instrument, as if music will somehow heal wounds or boost confidence. I myself don't exactly find that concept very exciting, and the idea of instruments as weapons leaves a lot to be desired (especially when no other class can use them). I myself never played them for those exact reasons.

Still, GW2 at least has Warhorns by default and ANet can probably come up with an original approach. It'd be an interesting challenge, coming up with a "Bard"-like class that's fun and exciting without ditching the core concepts. I'll have to think on this one and get back to you.

I hear this quite a bit. I think I am one of the rare few that absolutely love bard type classes in MMOs. You're definitely right about the instrument aspect. The warhorn could be a perfect solution.

The EQ Bard is still by far my favorite class I've played in any MMO. A close second would be a polearm or lance based class, but GW2 has neither. It makes me extremely sad. :(

I realize that no matter how much I want one, Dragoon is never going to be a class in any game not called "Final Fantasy". Guild Wars did leave out my other favorite class too, there's no druid or other shapeshifter-type.

Details about the gem system have made me calm. I knew that they wouldn't go out of their way to screw you over, but I like the system they have put in place. In a way it reminds me of people buying keys in TF2 and trading them for items and vice-versa.

Ugh. I just realized that if ANet does a Cantha expansion, the WoW Fanboys are going to say they're ripping of Pandara. That makes me sad.

The good thing is I have faith in ArenaNet to do the Asiatic architecture with proper style and I seriously can not wait to experience Cantha again. As much as I enjoy the environment detail in Pandaria, it is still quite basic and simple. I like to think that it would be similar to comparing Stormwind vs Divinity's Reach - there is no contest when considering which locale is superior in aesthetic design.

I think I just made the most epic character name in all of guild wars... and now it's mine in guild wars 2 when that comes out...

Ocarina of Rhyme gonna be bustin' chops in G-dub 2, y'all.

That class was probably the hardest to micromanage. So many ballads you had to switch at any given time.

I was thinking that despite the Norn having shapeshifting abilities, some kind of shape-shifting magic class might not be completely outside the realm of possibility.

As for a Dragoon, if they add spears I could see the Warrior or Guardian becoming a "Lancer" type class quite easily. Maybe a Spear in the hands of a ranger would be similar; they have lots of abilities that jump in and out of combat already (especially with a sword; a slash-and-retreat, a knockback and a leap). Then at least they'd have the drake pets too.

Pandara is an insultingly stereotypical "Generic Asian" style, like their world designers had lunch at a Chinese buffet as research. Not surprising since their answer to female Pandarens is "Tits and Pigtails". Whereas Arenanet actually looks at sexual dimorphism in the nature for reference.

I also am a big fan of Bards. Would love to see one added down the line to GW2.

So much Bard love in this thread. Usually they're the butt of everyone's jokes.

I doubt you can mail gems to people (and you can't trade p2p). This negates your statement :D If you can only do it through the AH the gold farms won't do much.
