So this snitch or anet dev/CM has access to the NeoGAF user database so they can match up that person's email address with the email address of their beta registrants?

Just trying to make sure I understand this hypothetical situation which makes no sense.

I'm trying to make sense of how you thought a blatant violation of an NDA is the same thing as posting information that was linked from an external source.

I hope you enjoy the book, Brett. Let me know what you think when you finish.

Thanks, and will do! I'm only on chapter 4, as I can only read it on breaks at work....well, that's when I'm willing to spend time devoted to reading. :)

That's all it really is but there's a little adventure within which is really nice. I do enjoy the whole fellowship story while getting past racial differences.

I'm actually more interested in the Sylvari than I was before. I knew they were a very young race, but their mindset of wanting to learn and contribute to a sort of racial hive-awareness for future generations and their interest in other cultures is pretty cool. Especially their interest in death and history since they're such a young race that none of them have actually died of natural causes or been part of anything that qualifies as history yet.

I've kind of shifted from "Plant elves, kinda cool but not for me" to "I might make a Sylvari alt". Thief or Mesmer, probably.

Loved the dungeon video. I like chaos, I like things going off the script and requiring players to think on their feet.

Funny you mention that because I've started to shift towards the norn with their hearty style, never ending love for battle and a chance at glory. The sylvari in GoA really grows on you with their knowledge, honesty and unrelenting ability to accomplish their tasks.

No human love? I see how it is bro.

Edit: Oh snap, missed the vid posted earlier. Watching now.

I love my human guardian =). It'll still be my first choice but after boning up on the lore, I have a huge appreciation for all the races of Tyria and how they evolved after 250 years.

That's what I heard but i'm about 100 pages into EoD. So far it's not bad but I can't stop thinking about GoA

Yeah. Kinda sucks Sea of Sorrows is pushed back to 2013, but.... that just means she's busy working on the game instead of the book.

I know, right? That's what I've been trying to get at with this whole "GW2 is not a Diku Clone" argument.

Chaos, things going off script in WoW = Wipe, blame the priest.
Chaos, things going off script in GW2 = working as intended.

I've always been drawn to the Norn a bit, maybe more than any other race. I like their attitude of celebrating life and trying to eek out one more victory for their legacy. Plus, they're huge. How could I consider a Warrior and Guardian and not be drawn towards a race that looks like a nine-foot tall wall of plate thundering down on you?

Still not decided on Human or Norn initially (probably which ever has the best hair/face style) but whatever race my Warrior ends up being, my Guardian will be the opposite.

As for the sylvari, I was going to mention their honesty too, it's neat that the species is so young it hasn't learned how to lie yet. The only race I am not huge on are the Asura, though I think if I make an Engineer I'll definitely lean in their direction. I'm just not a fan of diminutive tinker races, though they are a hell of a lot cooler than gnomes will ever be.

I'm alright with this to be honest. I hope Ree does an excellent job with the third and delivers a real captivating ending(if it's only a trilogy). It really is interesting how the Sylvari operate at such a young age(same as me lol) without any second thought but it's often with a sense of sincerity.

And, of course, i'm honored Burton!

With all of the race talk, I barely ever see anyone say that they are going to play a Sylvari. I honestly think it will be the least played race.

That's a shame if true. I saw a few Sylvari pictures with thief armor and that made me drool. It's probably because they either don't understand the Sylvari or just hate the plant race.

To me, they look very feminine. I like their lore, but I could never see myself playing one.

Which do you think is more damaging to ANet?

Decided to be Sylvari the day they released the trailer for them. I've never really had an interest in elves, but the whole innocent and inquisitive nature of the Sylvari seems appealing to me. So yeah, Sylvari Necro represent!

I think it's spill-over elf hate. They're the race of lithe tree-huggers (literally) and despite their leafy makeover (which I happen to like, actually) I think there's still a perception that they're the GW2 version of Elves. And let's face it, Elves have a reputation.

Lettuce hope GW2 changes that perception.

Which do you think is more damaging to ANet?

The real question is, which is more damaging to GAF in terms of reputation? That we dissect widely-available leaked information or that we flippantly disregard legal agreements?

Sylvari Ranger is one for down the line for myself personally.

Surprisingly the only race I doubt I am going to play within the first several months is Charr, and Humans are going to be my first two characters. How completely unlike me.

lol @ the lettuce. Good job, sir.

Exactly my point about GAF reputation. Again, good job, sir.

Fair enough. And who knows, you just might change your mind when you start playing =).

Maybe, but I have devoted every ounce of my (GW2) being, to being an Asura. :D

The best fight in that TB dungeon video was the last one(Ghost Eater?). Looked fun and for me, with the mechanics of GW2, I would probably prefer big open areas for fights as apposed to the closed in ones. The fight with the spikes looks like it could be cool too, if more was able to be seen. You could tell he was wishing it was footage he had recorded and not second hand.

The first fight though I could not tell what the hell was going on most of the time, but I think that was due mostly to the particle effects.

That seems like an excellent combination too. I like the Charr, I'm not sure I'll pounce (heh) at them right away. Not sure which profession to go with, but I'll figure that out as I go. All part of the fun.

Will be up soon. Looking at tonight or early morning tomorrow.
Awesome, let me know if you need me to revise any of the edits I made for clarity. I was thinking that we should probably have alternative contact methods for officers and GMs in case they lose access to GAF or something. Not that I'd ever get banned or anything, of course.

@Speedpop wat is this dungeon video you speak of ? This thread is huge :(

Edit: Beaten by mere moments. But my link doesn't include a lie; the video runs at 720p. So nyeh.

That seems to be a minor issue I have a problem with which i'm hoping can be resolved in the graphics menu. As much as I love flashy particles, i'd like to be able to see what my opponent is doing. =p

Why wouldn't you want to be a Sylvari ?

It could be attributed to some of us understanding them a little more through the lore and sharing the love or it could just be they look pretty awesome. And yes, the item shop isn't nearly as bad as most of your F2P games out there.

Sylvari Elementalist, Thief, Necromancer, or Warrior will be my main for sure. Will decide after playing them all.

Human looking races are boring. That really leaves Charr, Sylvari and Asura for me. I hate how big Charr are and I don't really like how small Asura are...so that leaves me one race.

Jesus this thread moves fast now, I guess that's a good thing. Just saw the facebook news of no more invites for this weekend. :( Well, at least I know not to expect anything in my email!

It's all good. I'll get in the preorder beta and all will be super.

A lot of us decided to pick up Ghosts of Ascalon and it's providing some insight into the races. One of the more interesting personalities happens to be Sylvari.

Ghosts of Ascalon largely included a summation of lore known to us before the book was released. Most of it was contained in the Movement of the World. Its not worth reading the book when you can easily read the wiki and gain more knowledge about the races in a shorter time. I suggest you not waste your time. Its really that bad. :\ You won't be satisfied with the sylvari lore found in the book alone.

Edge of Destiny, the second book, includes the newer lore and a few interesting Sylvari scenes. I'm referring to the Caithe and Faolin scenes. Unfortunately, they're not very fleshed out and they ultimately leave you wanting more. Again, those can be found on the wiki as well.

I really hope Ree does an awesome job with Sea of Sorrows. It would be nice to read something that wasn't mediocre half-assed garbage by someone who doesn't even have a general grasp of the knowledge of the world.

I really enjoyed GoA. Some good lore in it, and it's a fun little adventure story. It got pretty violent sometimes, too. Not amazing, but not a bad way to kill an afternoon. I hope a few of the characters show up in the game.

EoD, on the other hand, I couldn't even finish. Early scenes with Eir were okay, but later on it was just bad. Every bit of dialogue seemed like a forced, "witty" quip and the characters really fell flat.

I've been hearing very similar feedback from that book. I really liked GoA but i'm still going to try EoD and see if it hits me.

I think rampant fanboyism on my part would blind all defects in anything written about GW2 (unless it was well-founded)

I haven't gotten far enough to make that claim but i'm probably with you on that 8). I'd be more than happy to lend it to you if I could.

I'm gonna go lay down because i'm sick as a dog, but i'd thought I'd share this with most of you in this thread:

I'm thinking about doing a GAF GW2 podcast, discussing important topics with a lot of people who frequent this thread. It'd be neat to hear our thoughts on what's going on in a more official, GAF style. You can hear what we think and put a voice to our names.

Those of you who are gonna play with us in the GAF guild anyway are gonna hear us on vent or mumble or whatever, so it'd be a good time to get used to who we are.

I'm gonna message certain people in this thread to see if they want to partake and set up the first "episode" as it were.

I find it hilarious that you criticized me for informing GAF of a leak but you broke the NDA yourself. What I did makes me a horrible person deserving of hate, but when someone points our what you did, it becomes a nonsensical debate over a hypothetical situation. Very mature, thanks for contributing to the thread. I never got a reply from ArenaNet anyway so I hope you're satisfied.

Sweet, I hope it turns out very well. I always love to hear new perspectives on the game. Get better brother, gonna need you healthy for the battle with Zhaitan.

That would be a lot of fun, would definitely listen to this. Hope it happens!

Can't wait to listen to it.

I guess I could share my opinion on the books, though it's been kind of a while since I read them.

Ghosts of Ascalon was the better of the two, as it was able to tell a coherent, self-contained story within the larger world of Guild Wars. It serves as a good introduction to the state of the world and relationships between races, but the characters themselves aren't as well-established as I would have liked. It takes a little while for the story to get going, but once it does it maintains a good pace and manages to keep the events interesting. Overall it wasn't amazing but I still really enjoyed diving back into Guild Wars.

Edge of Destiny was disjointed at best, but has positive qualities where the other book is lacking. We get a really great look at Asura life, a bigger picture of the Human-Charr conflict, and big hero-type characters. Just as things are getting interesting, the story falls apart and the passage of time begins skipping around wildly. Then it suddenly concludes, and you're left with little more than "wut."
