Bungie ends development on Destiny 2

Yeah, Marathon is not what will save Bungie that is clear. There is something else going on here, gonna be fun to follow this. Thx for now Destiny, its been a pleasure, almost the whole time.

Sony has to be so pissed, nobody can tell me they weren't buying bungie based on the destiny franchise as a huge huge part.. What a joke

They aren't going to announce another a game in preproduction. What's the point. It has to be close to done before we would see anything about it.
If this company is going down the toilet which it is, they can't wait 4 to 5 years to alert d3s existence, there's no way.. I'm not saying they gotta announce it tomorrow but I think there's a clock tickin on it.

What changes with the announcement now. Lets announce d3 when everyone is mad about d2? If there is a d3 its probably a ways away and needs sometime for the dust to settle. Almost everyone suffered from burnout from d2 eventually. Might as well give it some time. But honestly I dont know how they are going to make it at this point unless they ramp up to something more than what bungie is or has other studio help.

Hopefully they have a Destiny 3 announcement planned in the next year or so, otherwise putting everything in Marathon seems like a fruitless endeavor.

Because it give that boost that something is coming down the pike, it's literally just out of respect something for the people who has kept bungie afloat for all these years.

What would it hurt to let people know? Not a thing

If Bungie is greenlit D3, it might take forever to come out. All comes down to how far along it is in prelim development (if at all). If the game truly has nothing going on or ultra early work it probably wont come out till 2029 or 2030.

In the meantime, it'll be lingering sales from D2 and Marathon for years.

Doesnt sound plausible to keep it going, but by the looks of it Sony execs are greenlighting a lot more Marathon content that spans S2 and beyond. They are already talking Season 5 which would be spring 2027 (assuming every season is 3 months). So Sony is willing to open up the wallet.

  • Season 2 will get a PvP-lite mode that leans more heavily on PvE as an experimental playlist.
  • Season 2 will get a second experimental playlist that is purely co-op PvE with mission objectives. I can confirm that this was not originally planned for season 2, and was created in response to some fan feedback about how they'd like such a mode (many players who like the current extraction mode are not on board).
  • At some point after season 2, Bungie says that a purely PvP mode will likely be tested in the game.
  • By season 5, Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler said "we're looking at bringing the whole ecosystem of (PV(P)VE) play together and evolving our weird sci-fi world in new ways."

Not sure why but I'm a bit sad about this. It's stopped playing at least a year ago, probably more, but it bugs me.

I also think they should just open up all the dlc and content to everyone who has bought the game before. Let it all ride. Have the bundle for anyone new but let those who had bought stuff before back in with everything.

Finally, glad they are bringing back SRL racing as a permanent edition as well. Seems like D2 will now just be a nice game to jump in some activities, until eventually D3 releases.

These press releases aren't just for "joe public." They're also carefully worded to keep investors from getting restless. So what isn't said is often revealing.

I'm not saying that Marathon is cooked. I'm just saying that its omission here is worth noting.

Sony told investors what it was doing with Marathon during it's latest earnings release and It told the market through a massive blog post dedicated to Marathon's upcoming seasons. Mentioning Marathon in press release for a game whose audience blames Marathon for the games death would be bad PR.

The final update is pretty substantial does seem like it is putting the game in a state that you can replay all the existing content that wasn't sunset and get updated gear.

People saying D3 which it might be but they've done that universe to death now. We've saved it more times then Star wars has.

They should just do a new IP.

D2 from launch until the final shape was a hell of a ride. That should have been it's natural end.

Didn't they take it all out because they wanted to update the game and all the stuff pre-Beyond Light wouldn't work. So they gutted the game. They'd have to redo all the old stuff to make it compatible again. They're never going to produce the vaulted stuff, it would cost too much time and money for no return. And that is a damn shame, it would have been nice if it was available to play from start to finish.

Unless that's the final update.

Humble Bundle had a destiny 2 bundle not that long ago, talk about being a douchebag

1. I doubt Humble were informed of this beforehand (unless you meant on Bungie's part)
2. They're not de-listing the game, the years worth of existing content will still be there.

I wonder if Sony will close down Bungie and work with the Destiny franchise themselves or give it to another studio?

The lore is deep enough for a movie or TV series (not that we'd want that, but it's there).

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea, give the IP to someone else that could give it a whole new look.

Sad to see it go.

Loved Destiny 2. Great game.

Should have concluded with the Final Shape. The Renegades stuff was just awful.
