Wkd Box Office Est. 03•23-25•12 - audiences hungry for Games

It's following the Dark Knight model currently. Though I doubt it reaches TDK's domestic highs.

TDK still did $468,576,467 OS and $41,300,000 in 19 territories it's first weekend. Hunger Games had a true WW launch with 67 territories.

Hunger Games is as close to a lock for $400m as you can get. It's got a great reception from general audiences, and its $51m Saturday number (the second biggest ever) means it's not displaying a particularly frontloaded pattern. Depending on how next week's openers perform, there's a chance it could even get the second weekend record from Avatar.

I also knew nothing of The Hunger Games until a few weeks ago. Good god, those numbers. Question is, can The Avengers or TDKR beat it?

I saw titanic in theaters when I was 7 or 8.

I don't need to see it again.

How can you not feel the need to pay to watch this fondly-remembered and constantly-talked about movie for the eleventh time?

Oh wait, that's right. Nobody has given a fuck about Titanic for years.

wow. really impressive stateside, but pretty underwhelming overseas. not that Lionsgate will be losing too much sleep over making just 200 million.

TDK had one of the biggest advantages in movie history fueling its OW with Ledger's death.

It's not that cut and dry.

and now TDKR has the advantage of coming off of everyone watching TDK. even if it's total shit, people will flock to TDKR opening weekend, like they did for Spiderman 3.

Plz, you're really overestimating Ledger's death. TDK was widely well received, TDKR's OW will be massive.

TDKR's gonna crush Hunger Games.

The Dark Knight Rises getting at least $170m is a foregone conclusion. In modern times, there's not one sequel to a film with great word of mouth that ended up selling fewer tickets than it's predecessor (barring unique situations like a midweek opening, or a huge time between films). I'd argue The Dark Knight is at least the second most revered film of the 2000s among general audiences.

lol, not even close.
This is the most impressive opening weekend since at least Spider-Man 1 in 2001. You can argue Avatar is more impressive in the long run, but that's a different matter.

And that is why it's important to have a beautiful leading lady.

Jennifer Lawerence > John (the poor man's Jake Gyllenhaal) and the ugly princess.

I just finished the book 5 minutes ago. I was switching between reading on a Kindle Fire and an iPad. I have a great desire to see the movie now. If not for the period spent on the games, but the Effie/Haymitch dynamic and to see how that translates to screen with Elizabeth and Woody (who's on a roll lately), and Lenny as Cinna. I already expect great things out of Jennifer, so I'm already sold on her.

Alice in Wonderland crossing $1 billion WW. Who would have called that before it's release.

Okay, this one is legit. Still though, doesn't diminish this opening weekend. The fact that it almost hit the MOST out-there estimate of $160M is just insane. There are a LOT of bigger name franchises coming this year that won't even be close to that.

TDK was well received, but that has nothing to do with the OW. Ledger's death was what fueled the OW. Hell, I saw it at midnight and I can't tell you how many chicks were there just to see Ledger. It was absurd. Of course everyone that came out loved it and the good WoM carried the movie to the second highest domestic gross ever.

Let me phrase what I mean another way. Would I be shocked if DKR destroys the OW record? No. But would I be shocked if it 'only' grossed 130-140m? No.

I read the book summaries and it seems very bland imo... but I guess the teens/Twilight crowd love it.

In what world is a story about teenage kids murdering each other in a televised death match bland? You could argue that the dystopian setting is a rip off of other fictional sources, but bland?

Wow. Who tossed 40 million at 1000 words?

Poor John Bomba of Mars. You had a great teaser and then the worst marketing campaign of all time.

Who cares if TDKR sets the OW record? Based on the Twilight series' growth, its a record TDKR would only hold for 16 months until Hunger Games 2 takes it in November 2013.

Can't say I'm surprised the figures were that high. Work at a theater myself, and it's just been absolute chaos. Every single showing sold out since the midnights.

I will say that the ratio of women to men, at least at my theater, has been like 90 to 10. It's definitely the Twilight audience.

$155 is still impressive even though it was tracking for over $100 m for a few weeks. I don't think anyone thought it would open to $155 m.

TDKR will do well since TDK was a very good movie but Ledger's death was a huge thing in the US. it's the only movie in over 1 billion with a bigger domestic share than world wide. might be the only one in top 20 or 30 but i'm to lazy to check.

and guys this is the fifth best opening weekend not second or third. best for non-sequel though.

that ranks fifth on the all-time list behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($91.1 million), New Moon ($72.7 million), Breaking Dawn Part 1 ($71.6 million) and Eclipse ($68.5 million). It wound up slightly ahead of The Dark Knight ($67.2 million), and also topped Alice in Wonderland ($40.8 million) to set a new record for a non-sequel.

Maybe. But good luck getting the third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh weekend records from it!

5th best opening day.

I don't care for this fad.
I don't see a problem with it per se. Movies adapted from books often seem like they are rushing things forward and they could often use more time to give certain themes, scenes and characters more depth. I mean, if they did A Song of Ice & Fire movies, would you cry foul if they adapted one book into more than one movie? If Game of Thrones was rushed through in one movie, imagine how much of it would be lost/would have to be cut.

Now, I'm not familiar with Hunger Games so I don't know if they've done this to a book with 150 pages or one with 500+, but especially in the latter case, if this allows them to explore some things from the books better, I'd be all for it (if done well).

Wrong.

But really, for a non-sequel, that is a mighty impressive opening weekend.

Its the third biggest OW ever. It would be might impressive even if it were a sequel.
