iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

When I sign in on a device it 'merges' (i.e. replaces aka fucks up) the local bookmarks before I can make a change to what's in iCloud. ARGH!1! I have to restore from backups now.

My bookmarks were synced pre-iCloud, so I have no idea how that initial merge is supposed to work.

I can tell you that once you get it sorted, you edit them by making a change on any synced device.

Do you know how to completely delete the bookmarks stored in iCloud?

Wouldn't you just delete your bookmarks on an iCloud device?

I mean, I don't know what's hard about this concept. ICloud is just and intermediary service. Once activated, it syncs devices. Obviously, the default option would be to merge, seeing as it doesn't really know which device is the one you 'prefer'.

Granted, they could add a few options during activation, say a box saying whether you want to merge, or just use what's on the cloud (I believe the calendar did that). I know it's probably too late now, but perhaps what you shuld've done is turn n iCloud n your device first, let it sync, then delete the bookmarks on the unwanted device, and then sync.

I understand merging is not necessarily the 'wanted' way that people want iCloud upon activation, but it's probably the single best default. Any other way leads possible data loss.

But I don't see why you want to edit in the cloud. Once on, editing anywhere is the same as editing everywhere. editing in e cloud is no different from editing n your device, UI aside.

Erase all bookmarks on a device? Or turn off iCloud bookmark syncing on all devices(not sure how long before they purge the records, though).

Delete what's in the iCloud and start the syncing afresh. I turned off syncing on all devices and it didn't purge the records immediately. When I tried to sign in again on a particular device it merged what's stored in iCloud with the local set.

Can't you enable bookmarks syncing in Safari on OS X/Windows and delete all of the bookmarks? I assume that would work.
hmm, I might try that.

I wanted it to merge, it didn't do that. Instead it deleted and replaced what's on my local device. iCloud fucked up. I'm trying to fix that.

You can sign into iCloud.com and edit Contacts. I don't see why you can't do that for Bookmarks too.

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you said you wanted it replaced, but it merged. Yeah, sounds like it has messed up royally, and I would be frustrated myself. There's some weirdness in Internet syncing in general. I'm always super weary about turning on syncing, so I made a back up before I turned on iCloud. Yeah, it's not easy to do that on ios. I had bookmarks synced before I used iCloud, though.

I think you have to conceptually think about it. For example, I have calendars synced. On my iPad, I made a change while off line. Then if I open my computer, before I bring my iPad online, iCloud will update with THAT (ie no changes, but a more recent time stamp). If I then go nine on my iPad, the changes will actually be removed.

This kind of syncing is not so smart, but I understand it, so try to avoid it.

I understand what Apple want to do with iCloud, that is, make it invisible, but I too would like some more granularity in web control.

hmm.... last night, i checked my icloud settings on my 4s and noticed that the last backup was january 6th, despite having automatic backup on. it says last backup failed. what could be the problem?? has anybody had this? i tried backing it up manually and left it over night, but the backup failed.

edit: just did the manual backup again and it worked. hmm.. i wonder what's gone wrong the past 90 attempts?? lol

Why is it, that when I erase individually photos in PhotoStream on one device, then their still in PhotoStream on the other devices?

It ruins the purpose of this feature to me. :/

Pretty sure it will only work for pictures you've taken since 5.1. Deleting new pictures should delete them across all devices. Try it out, 'cause I'm not positive.

Those must be pre -iOS 5.1 photos. You still have to manually delete photostream pix from each device they are on if they were added to the stream before the most recent update. Any pix taken or added on 5.1 should disappear from all devices when deleted on one.

I've got a strange Exchange problem which I can't seem to fix. On my iPhone I have my work exchange account setup which I pick all my email up on and send it out from there too. I have turned OFF mail contacts to sync in my iPhone exchange settings, but I do have all of works email addresses when composing a mail.

However, on my iPad (new iPad) I have set the exchange account up exactly the same as on the iPhone but I don't get any of the email addresses when composing a mail. I have tried syncing the contacts too to see if that helps and it doesn't.

Any ideas?

Edit. This is fixed now, it kinds fixed itself. I guess there must have been a slight delay shooting the contacts down to the iPad or something.

Can't seem to sync documents in Pages between my iPhone 4 and my iPad 3. I've turned iCloud on for both and Documents Shating 'on' for both in Settings. My syncing for photos and calendar seem to work perfectly.

Two quick questions: first, I cannot get cut the rope and cut the rope experiments to sync to iCloud. I have the option check to menu settings, but it doesn't appear in the iCloud database. Is this normal? Second, if I delete an album from iTunes, and the iTunes cloud, Can I then try to re-adding and uploaded to iTunes so that it gets into iTunes match? For whatever reason, only a couple songs from the new Springsteen album got added to iTunes match and a few songs did not. I thought that was on.

So all of a sudden, when I try to download any app, or update it, it gets stuck on waiting, and nothing happens. I've tried rebooting the phone, nothing. This only happened today. Is there anything else I can do? Anyone else experiencing this by some chance?

I've got a 4s btw.

Edit: Ok so it worked finally (was redownloading Week Calender), but it took a really long time, like 20 min or so. This is from going from my internet at home to the 3G network. It never takes that long. I'm really hoping it's just me.

It's normal. For Cut the Rope, it'll sync the progress of your game between devices but it won't keep a save file in your iCloud documents. The only game I have that both syncs game data and keeps a save file in iCloud documents is League of Evil 2.

I dont know if this is the right place but, I am having trouble installing new apps. They keep getting stuck on waiting....

I have logged out of the app store

Look at a few posts above yours. I'm having the same problem. I wonder if the app store is fucked up today?

Question: I had to delete quite a few songs from my itunes library for itunes match. Can i readd them after it syncs up? or no

I’m pretty sure you need to disable iTunes match on that specific computer to be able to add them back to your library.

you could try adding them prior to disabling iTunes match and see what happens. It might give you an error message the next time it tries to sync the library with iTunes match, though.

unrelated side note: Apple turned on the switch to allow Genius Mixes with iOS devices using iTunes Match. A little late after 5.1 hit abut still welcome.

Its been on since 5.1, at least for me. Maybe it was a regional thing?

Ugh, so, including my new iPad in my iMessage was a huge mistake. It's totally fucking with the send/receive delay of messages. Moreover, some messages seem to be arriving on my iPhone in a message thread and others on my pad, resulting in incomplete conversations on both.

How do I undo this all? My friends just tried to help me resolve it (since they were receiving double messages from me) by creating a new iMessage thread with both my email and my phone number and now I'm somehow getting those messages in TRIPLICATE. Worse still, they'll come in at different rates.

So confused. I don't even want to use iMessage on anything but my phone anymore. This is such a mess. Lol

I have a question.

When I receive iMessages on my iPhone, why don't those turn up on my iPad and MacBook Air?

it's because of the caller ID used on the phone.

by default the phone uses your number as the caller ID. the ipad and mac use an email address.

the phone needs to have your email address added to the list of places where you receive imessages and thn you need to change the caller ID on the phone to the email address and not our number.

now you'll get your messages across all your devices.

I did this last week and can confirm it works. (but I really think Apple should have set this up automatically for phone users as it's not obvious)

Oh, seems like it was the Caller ID I hadn't changed on my phone. Thanks a lot! I'll try it out.

EDIT:
Weird, it didn't work. :/

I have the same mail on all devices and iMessage is ON.

My work laptop recently broke and they fixed it by setting up a new profile for me. Since then I can't connect my iPhone to it as uit says it;s synced to a different computer. Any way I can fix this without having to add all my music and videos again?

Right click it in iTunes and pick Transfer Purhases.

Make sure you have authorised your iTunes installation first and that auto-syncing the device is turned off.

Try starting a *new* conversation on the iPad and see if it appears on all devices. I suspect that the conversations you already have going on on the iPhone are using your phone number and not your new caller ID address. Hopefully Apple will solve this in the future.

It works, but all of my family and friends use my number, so it really won't be practical. :/

Maybe you could preempt them and send them all messages using your new caller ID. Apple unfortunately is in a tough spot because of the general importability of phone numbers. If numbers were associated with the user (as it should be) and not the phone things would be a lot easier (and I wouldn't have had to go through having 5 different numbers). Another thing you could do is use messages to send them your contact card so that everyone has the up to date methods to contact you (these should be subscribe-able so they only need to be sent once, but unfortunately we are tied to old standards).

Ok so I got my iTunes all matched up with 25,000 songs. My iPad and iPhone lag like fuck scrolling through the music and it freezes for up to 10 seconds at a time just browsing. Will this always be this slow?

yes, I turned off iTunes match on my iPhone 4 because it just doesn't have the speed to run it smoothly

don't know how well it runs on a 4s

edit: my iPad (3rd gen) runs a lot smoother then the iPhone

That's kinda sad to hear. It's not even on the device. Don't know why it would be causing that. I can handle it on my iPad but it's annoying on my phone. Also it's really hard to find the music that's on the device. I wish you could separate it

The way it's set up now is just not practical, with "show all music" I have 8,000+ songs being viewed at once and it's a pain in the ass to navigate but it's the only way to download anything. With it turned off its still slow because all songs are still being loaded in the background but they are just hidden and it's useless because you can't download anything unless it's on. Turn iTunes match off and the music player runs smooth as butter again

I agree the songs not on the device need to be seperated

No, it does that the first few times since it's caching the entire database. After the initial download, successive uses will be far smoother. I'm sure Apple optimizes the database once it's downloaded to make it speedier.

just tried on my new iPad and iPhone 4 and it works well. i still wish there was a quicker way to toggle between viewing one's entire collection and just what's on the device, but oh well.

You're right that it initially is much slower when its garthering the data but it's still noticeably slower experience then having iTunes match Off

They need to update iTunes match to have an easy way to access cloud stores songs, the show all music on/off function is a joke and impractical for anyone with more then a couple hundred songs let alone a thousand

Yup. 25,000 songs and finding the 20 that were actually on the phone was a mess. I'm going to give it a few days and restart the phone and see if it speeds up

Also, i keep getting a random google music play error on my ipad? i dont even have anything google installed

what's the point of having an app downloaded on iTunes on your computer? Because I have 180 apps on my computer right now
Just to keep a personal backup of your DD purchases (app store is down, problems with your account, a certain app gets deleted from the store, etc). You can turn off 'sync apps' and delete all apps from your library afterwards in case you're not worried about it and just download each app from the store when you need them. You can also move them from the iTunes folder to an external HD and keep an external backup instead, just in case.

right now with iCloud? very little. apps that are really big, like 2 GB GPS apps or picture books, can sync to the iOS device faster if you don’t need to redownload them

If you rarely hook up your iOS device to the computer, you can delete those apps.

(even apps removed from the store are available for downloading from the “purchased” tab in the app store on the iPhone)
