I don't think any tracking had The Hunger Games that high, simply insane. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.
There were some at $150 mil I believe, but they were considered INCREDIBLY OPTIMISTIC.

By the way, these are just estimates. The weekend haul could potentially go up with actuals and snatch The Dark Knight's wig. THG has already bulldozed the OW of every Twilight film, and if I'm correct, it also surpassed the OW attendance of every Potter film?

Amazing Spidermna probably won't open THAT big, but I think it could easily gross a lot if it has good WoM. SM3's OW is proof that people want to love SM. The toxic WoM just killed it.

I think the Amazing spiderman will enter the billion dollar club with most of the money coming from overseas. People are just not that enthusiastic stateside but i believe people will eat it up overseas, it won't open big (90 million at most) that's for certain.

Great to see those high Hunter games numebers! It ranked $3 overall highest opening weekend which is very impressive.

Hopefully it has long legs like Avatar. To compare, Avatar only did $77 mil opening weekend.

Well based on that HG should gross about $1.5 billion domestically. Sounds right.

Do you think the re-release will make Titanic number one again?

Avatar currently sits at $2,782,275,172

and Titanic at $1,843,201,268

Not worldwide figures no, Avatar will reing for the next 5 years until Avatar 2 comes out.

EDIT: Also Titanic's record of 17 straight #1 weekends will not be topped in our lifetime.

Yea, that record is going to stick around for a very long time.

did Avatar really make that much money

why

Because........................................................cameron

In some respects Amazing Spiderman grossing a billion dollars worldwide at the box office would be a bigger shock than Hunger Games' three day opening numbers.

What'll be really tragic and spell the end of quality filmmaking as we know it is if Battleship outgrosses John Carter in a single weekend.

Fixed and...,

*retches*

Well done for The Hunger Games. The series appeals to the girls with the romance factor but also the boys with the killing everyone factor. I only dread when they adapt the 3rd book which is pretty damn bad compared to the first two.

Uhh...I really doubt that.

John Carter has been in theaters for three weeks and only made $62,347,000 thus far. The Hunter games made $155 mil in one weekend which is beastly. If Battleship makes $100mil in it's first opening weekend, it will still make more than John Carter.

Battleship will easily make more in it's opening weekend than John Carter in it's entire theather run.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. It hasn't exactly been lighting up the place with buzz. In fact, if anything it's been struggling to raise any sort of hype at this point. And that's after Universal pissed away $8m on that Superbowl ad that did nothing to raise the film's awareness among it's core audience.

Hell even the thread for it here on GAF (which should be it's primary demo, for better or worse) is barely 6 pages long IIRC.

Thankfully.

But Battleship also stars Taylor Kitsch. :P

And Universal have made a point of almost editing him totally out of the latest trailer instead concentrating on Rihanna and Liam Neeson
whose character is in the film for all of twenty minutes
which, considering he's the protag, is eye opening in itself.

Universal are clearly worried that some of that bad 'John Carter buzz' might attach itself to Battleship. But personally I think that particular ship has already sailed. Or sunk in Battleship's case.

I don't think you realize just how few movies make 100mill their opening weekend. Battleship will open at 50-60 max. It's not passing John Carter in one weekend.

Edit: i just bothered to look up tracking. It's being predicted at a 46 mill opening right now. So, even less.

Oh fuck. The Hunger Games just made me remember how much of the teen girl audience Avatar captured. The midnight opening screenings for the sequel are going to be painful, aren't they?

I wouldn't worry about it. By the time Avatar 2 comes out all those chicks will be menopausal.

EVERYONE saw Avatar but it doesn't have some kind of rabid teen fanbase obsessed with it like Twilight, Harry Potter, or Hunger Games.

Which reminds me, the lack of a rabid fan community obsessed with the Avatar universe and Avatar merchandise has always surprised me. There is no real large fanboy community obsessed with the universe and devoted to collecting and so forth that existed for franchises like Star Wars soon as the first film was in theaters.

The fact that merchandise sales for Avatar like action figures were a dud was strange.

You might be right, but the film is pretty much targeting that Transformers demographic (I've even had a friend ask if it was a Transformers spinoff, which is kind of understandable lol), and I have a hard time not seeing them showing up in droves. Universal has also been on a remarkable hot streak for the last year or so with their films (see Fast Five, Bridesmaids, Lorax, and others), so I feel like they know what they're doing.

Hahaha, that's a very good point.

So, when I bothered looking up Battleships tracking I saw Avengers.

It's currently being predicted for a 155 mill OW. If it opens that high, I'd be amazed. Guess Hunger Games might not hold this years crown long.

What can you expect from a movie with Rihanus?

Her album curse will probably carry over to the movie. Shit is DOA.
