When I was young, the school bus had seat belts while every "regular" bus was without.

In Europe, they still have.

During school trips, they always said you needed to wear them. Not that anyone cared after having done the mandatory thing of announcing to put them on. Could walk, jump and roll through busses as much as we wanted.

But still, travelling by bus through Europe and you'll often still find them.

You sit higher and the bus outweighs almost anything that can hit it.
Makes sense when the bus hits another car but there's still the risk of the bus hitting a tree or a wall.

If it was just the diagonal, yes. But the lap belt pretty much prevents this.
Hm, that would make sense, unless... he was driving with his feet behind his head. Yeah, that must have been how it went down!

Would safety belts make kids less safe?

I can't imagine they would. But the data shows it that there is little to gain in terms of enhanced safety. I'm not opposed to having belts on busses or anything.

Makes sense when the bus hits another car but there's still the risk of the bus hitting a tree or a wall.

If you head-on a wall at highway speeds, a seatbelt won't really make a difference.
