People I bet though are all saying it pulled it off because it rode off of Heath Ledgers death and how good he was in TDK. Rises doesn't have that.

Yes but it's also the finale for a movie franchise and those can do better just on name recognition alone. Nolan is a very well known name now and Batman is too. Reviews though are going to make or break the box office numbers.

DH2 smashed the OW record simply because it was the last in the series. No other Potter film came close to that total before. TDKR is already being marketed as the last film in Nolan's trilogy.

Fox reallyfucked that up. The almost complete lack of merchandise hurt its ability to have a lasting impact where franchise loyality like this is made for a life time like was the case for Star Wars, with kids.

I mean even today all the kids I know around the age where they'd get obsessed with avatar toys if they existed are way into stuff like star wars the clone wars, bakugan, etc and barely even remember avatar.

Ive found this interesting, too, considering the money it raked in. But really, what is there to remember? The main draw, the planet, can't really be merchandised; that's what seeing the movie is for. Other than that there's nothing really original enough to stand out as a toy or anything. Really there's not going to be a mass market appeal for figures or anything. What kids are going to want to bring skinny half naked blue cat people toys with them? The language never caught on, no catch phrases or dialogue to become a big part of the mainstream pop culture. The cooler stuff like the mechs or ships might have worked, I guess, but I wonder how easily the average moviegoer could pick one of those out when compared with other similar famous sci if stuff.

You all laugh now. But when I become a trillionaire and personally fund John Carter: The Gods of Mars, who'll be laughing?!

still you :/

What are the odds of The Dark Knight Rises beating The Hunger Games in opening weekend? I took that bet blind from some people at work. But in Nolan I trust. Did I set myself up for a loss?

I think TDKR will do $170 and finish up over $500m. THG should probably finish around $375 IMO.

So, when I bothered looking up Battleships tracking I saw Avengers.

It's currently being predicted for a 155 mill OW. If it opens that high, I'd be amazed. Guess Hunger Games might not hold this years crown long.

Where do you find tracking numbers?
lionsgate sold the international distribution rights for 40 million to cut down on the risk of a new franchise so they only really care about domestic box office.
Who has the international rights now? Is that local distributors or one of the big studios?

Right there. Tracking is horseshit. It's like predicting the weather.

Hmm... not really. Tracking is usually pretty on-point.. there are outliers here and there, but it provides a pretty good idea of what a film will do within a certain margin of error. The information is not available to the public, but it usually gets leaked to the entertainment news outlets.

If you are at all interested in the box office, there's really no reason you shouldn't be playing HSX. It's the best way to get an idea on how well a film will do and tracking is usually leaked/posted there in advance. Plus, it's a fun game!

Also, aside from Ledger himself, the Joker is an extremely iconic and popular character - The Dark Knight Rises doesn't really have an equivalent. I'm sure it'll be big, but I just don't see hype reaching the same levels. (Of course, I've been very, very wrong about these things before).

This is all true but I think it will affect TDKR's legs more than the opening weekend. TDK and Inception have cultivated a pretty rabid Nolan fanbase, and say what you will about his strengths and shortcomings, he's got an impeccable mainstream reputation right now. There is huge casual interest in TDKR, there is a legion of hardcore fans, and it's the "last" Batman movie (something which will probably be pushed hard as we get closer to release). I wouldn't bet on it outgrossing TDK overall, but I would bet on a record-breaking opening weekend.

I don't see the "last" thing having as much of an effect as something like Harry Potter (where there are no more books to adapt). Everyone and their mother knows that there'll be a reboot by the end of the decade, maybe even as soon as 2015 or so.

Wait wait wait wait. Hold on, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but are there people here that seriously think THG is going ot outgross TDKR this year?

And The Hobbit part 1 will out gross both of them.

And then.....? Then our alien ant overlords will reclaim the Earth.

One thing is for certain there is no stopping them, the ants will soon be here.

And I for one welcome our new insect overlords.

Possibly, but it being the last Nolan entry, and the idea of something dramatic happening to Batman (I have read no spoilers or speculation, just based on it being the end of a trilogy), is a considerable factor, I think. People have gotten more attached to Nolan telling a complete story here than the previous episodic Batman movies.

Opening weekend. (I think. I hope.)

Worldwide? For a joke.

Domestically? It won't top TDKR and I think even HG may top it depending on what the second weekend shows.

I have a feeling that The Hobbit will easily be the highest grossing film of the year. Worldwide for certain and a good chance it will take the 'US crown' as well.

Between Peter Jackson returning to write/direct, the 3D and the rabid fan base it's going to do monster business IMHO.

And even if the film itself is poor I think that the fans (as they did with Abrams Trek movie) will drive it's numbers by going to see it again and again and again..........

I imagine that WB will attach a more 'action orientated' Hobbit trailer to TDKR and then everyone will be chomping at the bit to see the film(s).

So the next X-Men is going to feature Mystique big time now.

Oh damn! How did I not realize that was Jennifer Lawrence? I thought she sucked in that and couldn't stand the casting! But then she did a fantastic job on Winter's Bone and apparently The Hunger Games (haven't seen it yet). Who would have thought?!

And for the record, I think that would be a terrible job. Mystique sucks. Need more of Xavier and Magneto. They made the movie.

Hobbit won't beat HG domestically.

I agree. After watching that cringe worthy trailer, I have no hype for the film. Peter Jackson better get with it and show a trailer with some damn action in it! I don't care about all these damn hobbits frolicking about singing songs with gnomes and shit.

Avengers won't do shit. I'm calling 70ish opening, and that's being nice.

And that is probably the ceiling. I'm betting the RT score will be in the 40's MAX and if that is the case, we're probably looking at an opening in the 60's. Huge bomba upcoming. No way the movie will be even half way decent.
