Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

Grrrrrrr, that's it. I'm going on a break from reading gaming news until April 2nd or 3rd. Seriously... this is the second time I've been fooled because I keep forgetting what day it is. LoL.

lol

I hope they really do put a blog post up for the Chronomancer and the Summoner. I'd like to read it, even if it is an April Fools joke.

I call Shenanigans on the Wiki post. A /wiki command that takes players to an out-of-game resource ArenaNet doesn't control and is notorious for vandalism and misinformation? Developer-controlled Elder Dragons? Mysterious delay to next year? Chronomancer and Summoner professions at launch?

Gonna be waiting a long time for that one, friend.

It's in GW1, it's not fake. They've talked about wiki support in the past and directly implementing it into GW2 in a much more advanced form than what we got in GW1. And ANet DOES control the wiki in the sense that they put it up and it hasn't been an issue for the GW1 version.

Thanks hahaha, I meant the 3rd. I fixed it.

Pretty sure a 2013 release date would be one serious outcry from the fanbase... interested in seeing what other news they might add with the pre-purchase of the game on the 10th though.

So... Big fan of the first game, signed up for the beta, didn't get in. FML ?

Sigh.. Reading this thread makes everything harder.

Yeah, I'm with you on that one... what made me really enjoy the first one was the Cantha & I'll be looking forward to any content they put out in GW2 with Cantha in it. =)

The /wiki thing? That's the least bullshit-sounding tidbit in that post though. Also, the link now mysteriously reads "2011" instead of "2013".

Yeah, it's not bullshit by any means because it was in the first one and they've talked about putting a much better version of it into the second game.

Ah, I was under the impression it was just a bunch of random geeks working on a Wiki, I didn't realize it had any official capacity. Either way, the homepage on the wiki is now bright pink and the dragon logo replaced with the Minstrel, so... Shenanigans still stand.

I want a real summoner class x_X.

The Elementalist can summon elementals... But really, how would a summoner class work? You create a portal and a big monster comes crawling out and you control it like a pet? Or do they summon the spirit of a monster and shapeshift into the monster, like a Druid? Or do they physically climb onto the monster and ride on their shoulders or back?

Actually, all of those sound pretty cool... fuck, I want a real summoner class too x_X.

My ideal summoner would probably be more something like that Magician was from EQ. Would overlap with the elementalist a bit for sure, but much more focus would be on the pets. One thing I miss is being able to give my pets gear and have them equip it (though it wasn't visible when they did this in EQ). I would like something like that but with more permanence. Let me really build up my minions to be badasses. Hell I just miss summoning shit in general. No class has really had a huge focus on summoning things in most MMO's.

Another idea I had is to maybe let multiple summoners work together to summon something REALLY big. Then they all have to work together to control it, and all get rewarded with what the big creature kills. Remember when people were actually kind of afraid when a warlock would summon a doomguard in WoW? I would like to see that times 10.

I like the FFXI summoner, really good playstyle & ideas they had! ... Despite how much of a grind & how unforgiving the game was. -_-

Looking to do the next GAFWars 2 Podcast on Monday, April 2, 2012 after 9:30 PM EST.

All the members of the podcast down?

That's fine by me. I will, as usual, have very little to talk about that isn't second hand. But it's fun to yap about the game a little and everyone seemed to like the first one.

Unfortunately i'm working Monday. Wont be back until Tuesday.

Couldn't we push the Podcast back to Tuesday? After all, that'd give them two days to clear up all this April Fool's nonsense and the EU Fan Event is Monday, so we'd have news coming out of that, in theory. And then more people would be able to make it.

Good point.

Good point.

Yup. Arken did an awesome job on the Podcast last week, stepping up to run the whole show with only a few hours notice after Ash's health took a turn. It seems only fair we try and accommodate his schedule, assuming it doesn't wildly interfere with anyone else.

And yeah, we don't have a whole lot of news to discuss so if the Fan Event gives us some nuggets, at least there's something.

Mind if I join again?

You're an officer and you had a lot of time in Beta, in an official press capacity no less. I see no reason why not.

You guys should probably communicate this stuff through PM... not trying to be a dick, it's just that there are a ton of posts about it above me.

If you guys do a podcast on tuesday can you guys talk about things that you would like anet to improve or fix or just general concers about the game?

Thank god for the weekend, managed to catch up on all the GW2 news and can't wait till the 10th of April. Also listened to the first Gaf-GW2 podcast, excellent work guys!

I love the look of the new elementalist traits and spent some time this morning messing around with a build creator, here is my first attempt at a D/D build for general PvE:

http://www.gw2tools.com/skills#el;af...dga;bbaa;YUfgZ

My build focuses on signets, movement and condition removal.

Signets
Being ele I want to be able to focus on the huge number of skills available to me. Signet passives are constantly providing me with small buffs in the background and when s**t hits the fan I can use them as a crutch. There is some really nice synergy between the signet active skills and D/D. For example:

Signet of Water + Frozen Burst = 7 seconds of Chilled (This can be increased to 10 seconds if you go D/F with Freezing Gust!)
Signet of Earth + Magnetic Grasp = 7 seconds of immobilise.

These are further boosted by maxing out the Earth trait line with Written in Stone and Signet Mastery.

Movement
Being D/D I need to be able to move around quick, Windborne Dagger and Signet of Air stack (hopefully!) to give me a base 25% increase, which goes up to 35% when I am in Air. Also, Burning Speed, Ride the Lightening and Magnetic Grasp should help to get me in and out of melee fast.

Condition Removal
To make sure I can keep moving and survive I need to keep conditions to a minimum. Cleansing Wave (the skill), Stop Drop and Roll and Signet of Water should help me to control the level of conditions. I wish I could have taken the Cleansing Wave trait also but I ran out of trait points. I don't want to give up Bolt to the Heart, Earth's Embrace and Arcane Retribution as I think these might be the 3 best ele traits going.

Weaknesses
I'm no build master - but I think the main weakness of my build might be lack of damage as I have no points in Fire. I hope I can cover this through runes/armour/weapon bonuses etc. But my build is centered around my desired playstyle so I hope the thrill of darting in and out of melee and surviving makes up for the lack of damage being inflicted by my fellow ele brethren.

Anybody else been build-crafting? Would love to see what other elementalists are thinking in terms of play styles.

Are there any good world vs world videos out there? I have no clue about it, so one that goes from the beginning to the end would be awesome.

Thanks guys.

This is probably old, but I just read it so...

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Wiki: "So, when will the game finally ‘be ready?’ It’s been ‘getting ready’ for many years and I suspect a large portion of the gaming population thinks it will be the next big vaporware. You could make changes to improve it indefinitely, but when will ArenaNet decide that enough is enough and release it?"

Colin: "Well, to be honest; the official release will have to be slightly postponed due to rebalancing issues with the Elder Dragons. Now, I know that this news will cause some form of shock but please hear us out first. It’s important that we get this news across clearly and completely."
"When we first designed Zhaitan—the main antagonist of the initial release—we wanted to make it a real challenge to bring Zhaitan down, only possible through a combination of personal storyline(s) and limiting the amount of players per fight. We soon realized that this approach clashes with our ideals of having a persistent, open world. From that moment on we have started to explore other options. We’re redesigning the genre altogether after all, this no less. We have decided to restructure, but mainly rebalance the Elder Dragons."
"We wanted to make players experience the true prowess of the Elder Dragons. These rebalancing processes aspire exactly that. We don’t want every clash with an Elder Dragon to feel anticipated, expected, clearly a choice of AI to act as best as it can be programmed. Whilst the first time fighting a specific Elder Dragon it will obviously be unique and unpredictable, but after that the battle would just be the same thing all over again; there is nothing new in a second battle, compared to a first."
"And our solution isn’t one you’d expect of a professional team like ours, or anyone’s. Our solution surpasses AI completely. We have chosen to exclude AI from the battle with Elder Dragons. Every battle with an Elder Dragon will be fully open, persistent. Everyone can interject with the battle at any time, much like any dynamic event. But the difference with dynamic events is the fact that the objective isn’t controlled by an AI script. The objective is controlled by an actual player. Or rather, an actual member of our team. We’ve stationed various team members to take a shot at playing the Elder Dragon Zhaitan from release day onward. There is no roster we’re giving out, so you’ll never know who is playing Zhaitan at any given time. But in the end, you’re never fighting a computer. We’ve turned the team you support into the team you might end up despising, because they will be your main antagonist soon.

I think it could be really interesting, or a very bad idea. A non AI controlled boss? Hmm....

Nope, we're still good to go for 2012 -- the interview was an April Fool's Day joke! ~RB2

And there you have it.

This was the interview on the Wiki about the 2013 release.
