Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I do suppose nintendo could also release an cheaper sku with out a controller and hdmi cable. So you can admire the design of the console, right next to your shinny HD TV :P

About Myspace rumor:
As a rumour thing I do suppose that it can be changed up, as it passes from mouth to mouth, from developer to insider to reporter. So it may not be Myspace it may be Facebook.
On the other hand they might had meant that the developers of Myspace are working on a social service for WiiU; which may not have anything to do with Myspace.

So many possibilities.

I dunno why Nintendo would do this.
Just expand SwapNote into a much better and faster service. Allow for statuses and friends and groups.
Viola.

Speaking of specs, it was on this day in 2006 that Matt from IGN took a question about the Wii's power. IGN earlier had reported on the Wii's specs, forcing a response from Nintendo. Here, Matt answers a reader question regarding the specs..

http://wii.ign.com/mail/2006-03-30.html

Thanks for the letter. I’m going to take a deep breath and try to run through this. Let’s start with the similarities between GameCube and Revolution. According to Revolution developers, Nintendo’s new console shares similar CPU and GPU architectures to GameCube. The new clock rate figures we revealed are almost exactly 1.5 times more powerful than those for Nintendo’s current generation system. I mean, if you were to take a calculator and multiple the CPU and GPU speeds on GameCube by 1.5, you would end up with the MHz figures we posted for Revolution. But that doesn’t mean the console as a whole is only 1.5 times more powerful. There are other considerations, including RAM and overall bandwidth, which play important roles in the final equation.

We posted these specs because they are newsworthy and it’s our job to bring readers the latest in Revolution developments. Some hardcore fans are really upset that we chose to file our report, but we make no apologies for doing what we’re paid to do.

I don't envy him for what he had to deal with back then. Damn..

Also here is another look at the stick:

They look really cheap for some reason. The one on the 3ds doesn't though. I'm not sure why.

Yea I figured it would have to better graphics than the Xbox 360/Ps3 if their focus is catering to the hardcore and softcore markets simultaneously.

Matt has moved onto greener pastures anyway, never has to deal with crazyy gamers ever again.

And good for him. Although I think Nintendo fans lost perhaps their best "mainstream" reporter when he left.

I don't go to the major websites very often (other than for history posts here), and I can't think of any other Nintendo beat reporter that comes close.

My #1 on the list of things that need to change before launch is the color. They CANNOT release in white if they want to reach that audience they seem so keen on winning back. Black is the safe color, where you know you’re not losing anyone. If the only option is white, I know a lot of people will wait.

I would be surprised if they went in favour of another color, same as if the rumoured name change eliminated "Wii."

I personally would like a variety, but I understand there is an economy to color. Can't manufacture too many lest one is unpopular, I guess.

Well by hiring the myspace guys they could assign there staff to other projects, and they already have a lot of experience in that domain (anything is better then EA)

How about an sku that is the colour of white (royal white marble) and another sku in colour of (smooth) leather black :P This way everyone is happy.

Imagine the hacks.

"I purchased Carnival Games 12, but once I taped holes A-4 and B-7 while punching out F-10 and G-2, I ended up being able to play Battlefield 4!"

Softcore?

True. But black is a pretty safe bet for sales, one would think.

If only Fran would come back.

I miss my dear ol' Fran Goat...

I was thinking more about the multitude of colors shown of the Wii, which would be amazingly fun to see but not likely.

Black is indeed a safe bet though, and would probably earn my purchase.

Definately. Audrey and Richard are far too apologist, and the site (IGN) in general seems to crave flamewars over everything Nintendo.

I don't think this is an issue at all. Nintendo will just put in 32 gigs of internal memory and have a (micro) SD card slot in there. That'll suffice for the majority of the consumers, especially the 'Wii crowd'. The rest of us will have the option of the external HDD.

I really appreciate the wear and tear issue. Imagine having to pay the high price to replace your uPad because the control stick/nub has gotten lose or worn-down. I'd be a bit annoyed.

Yeah, it's actually a understandable rationale for the sliders if replacing the controller should be uber-expensive (~$90-$100). Not that I want the sliders anyway, but it makes sense from that angle. On the flip side, it might make Nintendo a bit more cash to sell extra controllers.

Anyway, just another reason to release the next-gen GCN pad successor! :)

After I've been playing a lot more 3D Land and KI, I can get used to the sliders probably but I wouldn't opt for them.

32 would be a solid amount.

Are we talking strictly lack of GoD, or also installation for these HDD woes?

Why not a B&W Wii U? Could have a big marketing push to save Panda's, appeal to the casual demographics (they love Panda's!). For every Wii U that is bought a gentle loving sweet Panda lives gloriously in a field a bamboo...Nintendo donates 1,000 Yen for every mil sold.

"Wii U - Save the Panda's"

It would be kind of weird if Nintendo was more practical about out of the box storage than Sony was this handheld generation but went the total opposite way this console generation.

Good idea though.

That would be pretty awsome.

Something like this but a wiiu (and no skulls)

At CES 2012 Myspace announced their Myspace TV initiative. Will allow watching TV shows, music videos etc while also having the social network layer on top of it all.

Its intended for specific TV brands and Tablets etc right now. I could se Nintendo easily being swayed at CES or earlier to work with them

what is the difference between that and having Netflix and Hulu+ on WiiU?
I can see all 3 on WiiU so not a huge deal here unless this MySpace thing is NiN

I think the main jist of the initiative is to allow people to watch stuff and interact at the same time. Kinda like the whole PS3 movie theater thing but more developed

In this regard I am quite happy that Nintendo is fastidiously gaming-oriented, and hope they remain this way. This Myspace deal sounds awful to the core.

The Nintendo Connection:

Now you can have your own profile, upload your own photos and everything. A kinda of facebook rippoff but improved, also you can customise your profile with a costume background. All games are tied to your profile. You may link your account with your facebook/myspace account also if you like, all status and photos automatically get posted also on facebook/myspace.

Nintendo will have their own little app store, much like they do on the DSi and 3DS.
But it certainly will be much more gaming focused.

I guess it goes back to "exclusive".

For example, MySpace has a good amount of artists and stuff, that they usually advertise. So the latest music videos, or videos of someone's tour could be "highlights" from them.

Netflix is losing (or lost already) their contract with Starz, which also eliminates content from Disney and Marvel. Yet, they're looking around for deals. Recently, they announced a (multi-year) deal on which they're going to get the movie 'The Artist' first and before other services (while the deal also included other movies from Weinsten Co.).

Basically, all this services are turning into individual-channels of sorts, so if for some movies you might need Netflix, for others Hulu and so on.

EDIT:
But yeah. In the case of MySpace; it could also bring some kinda of social-network aspects of their service too. It won't mean that Facebook is out of the question; but it seems they're just opening the gates for more variety.

It's kind of crazy how fast MySpace bit the dust after how huge it was, it seemed like overnight people just stopped giving a shit and moved to FB. Hopefully the FB trend wears out in the next 5 years, along with the recycled FPS trends. Probably wishful thinking though.

Then they're just move to the next stupid thing, FaceSpace and RPGs with heavy FPS elements

Someone else think that Nintendo will try harder to turn Wii U in the default media hub for the family? They reach a great great success with Netflix on Wii.
