GI.biz: "Wii U less powerful than PS3, Xbox 360, developers say"

All I can say is lmao

I laughed for a solid 20 seconds straight just from reading the thread title.

Here's what I think it means: Some aspects (like the RAM) are in Wii U's favor, but other aspects (not sure what) aren't up to 360/PS3 standard. The article alludes to that here:

Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."

It was posted April 2nd, so not April Fools. And the writer quotes more than one developer saying the same thing. So either multiple sources are in cahoots to feed this guy the same fake story or GI International/Eurogamer are publishing a story totally fabricated inhouse that could be totally discredited at E3 if not sooner, if its not true. Why would do they do that to their reputation?
Agreed. This would destroy all credibility for their site.

The cliched weak sauce defence.

Anyway, I am pretty certain (judging by HW rumours) that the dev be trolling us. I mean, who says "graphics are not as powerful". It does not make any sense.

l337 devs that's who... it's all about whos graphics are more powerful mwahahahhahahaa

The PS3/Vita statement should be enough for people to realize this probably isn't true. Lag-free is one of the Wii U's selling points.

Please, play remote play on your Vita and tell me how "lag-free" it is.

Spoiler alert: It's terrible. Most games are awful. Bionic Commando:Rearmed (one of the few PSN games that actually works with it) is basically unplayable.

The Vita/PS3 combo is terrible.

True, but 2004's Remote Play is not the only possible solution.

Since Vita is a pretty capable piece of hardware on its own, you could have native code running on Vita, and use wifi or bluetooth to keep it synced with PS3.

There's also plenty of opportunity to improve the video streaming technology in Remote Play as well. Video codecs have improved since 2004 and Vita uses 802.11g instead of b (54mbps vs 11mpbs).

i just hope they upgrade the graphics cards to include adult shaders cos the past nintendo consoles they always pick the kiddy shaders it makes the games look so kiddy i hate it they need ps3 or xbox shaders instead

I actually knew a guy who argued Resident Evil 4 on my GameCube was 'cheating' to look as good as it did, because the hardware normally renders games looking more 'kiddy'.

This is off topic.

That is amazing.

You better not charge a cent under $400, Nintendo. I want another copy of Duck Hunt when you're done shitting in our collective mouths. And I want to be called a Super Ambassador this time.

It's more likely that whatever shit middleware they are using isn't optimized to the system like it is for the PS3/360 and so they blame the hardware, instead of their own incompetence.

How do you really feel?

I remember a few like that. XD
But sadly, many are still like that (like a kid I mentioned some months ago, in a store saying that the Wii "could do Call of Duty"...right in the Wii section, in front of World at War, Black Ops, Modern Warfare Reflex...).

Or someone I remember been shocked, when in Mario Kart 64..those little/quick animations when you choose your character (which was like an animated gif). He was shocked that the N64 was doing that, because as far as he knew, they N64 "could do movies like that".

:p

That doesn't sound "easier to program for", for a start.

I think this springboards into a price discussion too. The better the Wii-U hardware, the more this thing is going to cost. If it's not significantly better than current offerings the 360/Kinect will be the least expensive offering. How many Wii/360-kinect owners that aren't hardcore gamers will jump on a Wii U?

He was kind of half right though wasn't he? Didn't RE4 GC render in a ridiculously low resolution, letterboxed? 400x300ish or something? It was somewhat cheating in that sense.

So it's Ubisoft, then?

You have GOT to be kidding me!

It's not even that. Personally for me the fact that the article stated that working on the Wii U is harder than working on the PS3 should have been a red flag to some.

The only way to solve this is if we extract the graphics from an xbox, a ps3, and a wii-u and force them to compete in a timed obstacle course followed by some heavy bench pressing.

and then, finally, we will know who's graphics are more powerful. just like the olympics.

it basically did what most dev's did with PS3/360 games and shaved off resolution for increased performance I think.

The ones that want to play the exclusive software?

Agreed. This would destroy all credibility for their site.

To be fair, that clearly hasn't stopped any other gaming websites from posting blatantly false information/rumors.

Gameindustrybiz is not same trash tabloid fan made website. And the dude who wrote this has been in the industry for 30 years. I can't imagine they would just make this up.

Which no one was even aware of until this article.

Because no one really remembers any of this crap months later.

If this somehow ends up being true GI.biz can say "Told you so", if it ends up being false they can claim that the hardware was still in development and specs have improved or whatever.

Look at the site archive, this is the only exclusive rumour article GI.biz have published in the last 2 years (as far back as it goes).

Certainly doesn't seem like a site that throws out crazy rumours.

So again either multiple sources in the industry have decided to tell the same lie or the west coast editor of GI.biz (who has worked for EA, Capcom etc.) just decided to make up a totally bullshit story with imaginary sources.

It rendered what it rendered, looking as good as it did, because it was rendered. All games use tricks, tools and techniques to achieve their IQ.

His argument wasn't anything technical or specific. Simply that Resident Evil 4 'cheated', whatever the hell that means, to look the way it did on the GameCube, because the hardware architecture normally renders games 'kiddy' and nothing like that.

He also though Wind Waker looked horrific, and desperately wanted Apple to release a console alongside Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

He was a moron.

Wind Waker was cartoony. That demo was supposed to look realistic. DURRRRRR.
I'm arguing that there hasn't been a realistic looking Zelda ever. Twilight Princess style just uses a darker palette than usual, but it's still pretty damn cartoony. At the very least it's stylistic and not striving for photorealism.

At the very least base your criticism on the bird-demo, at least that demo seems to strive for realism :P

Yea. It's a fairly standard Power processor which these guys have been working with since the original Gamecube unless these guys have problems with OOE.

I honestly wouldn't mind, as long as it has games that I like and want to play.

But then I'm happier playing 8/16-bit games than I am most modern games anyway.

Oh man, Nintendo's E3 Press Conference is going to give some great posts and gifs here. Can't wait for the comparisons between Wii U and 360/PS3.

I had quite a few friends being shocked when looking at RE4 Wii saying that they were surprised that the Wii could pull off these graphics and that the Wii really wasn't that bad graphically as they previously thought. I blew their minds when I told them it was a Gamecube port that didn't have graphical enhancements and that the Wii was capable of slightly better.

Based on SH Collection, the Ps2 is more powerful than the Ps3 in some areas.

Articles like these make me wonder how would GAFers even survive till E3. More site maintenance are coming I'm sure.

Now that my initial knee jerk reaction is out of the way, I am also wondering if it is indeed credible due to where it was posted.

That said, misinformation can still propagate really fast among mainstream media. I guess E3 and more candid interviews with third party devs will be an eye opener.

Sounds like a nice bloke open for constructive critiscism

I think, just to be on the safe side, that we should all post GIFs of the infamous Killzone teaser trailer from E3 2005.

That way..... stuff will.... the tablet controller is going to be expensive.... 3DS......

*cough*

You know what? I think I'm going to sit this one out and just wait until we get an identical article saying the same thing tomorrow...., or the day after.

I don't think they have made it up, I just think their sources are unreliable. Like, the info is coming from a junior programmer who is there for an intern placement or something.

That doesn't sound "easier to program for", for a start.

It's really up to Sony's SDK designers. There's no point in speculating about speculation, but if the main appeal of the 2nd screen is for maps, inventory, Madden play selection, etc Sony could expose a fairly simple API for deploying 2D menus to Vita. Generated code for Vita, basically, or a simple virtual machine like Minis.

There's no way of knowing what's actually happening. We've seen a little from Sony and a few small tidbits from developers (including this story). Maybe it'll be nothing, maybe it'll be something. If 3rd parties are already implementing these features on WiiU, Sony has an incentive to make those features easily portable to PS3+Vita.
