GI.biz: "Wii U less powerful than PS3, Xbox 360, developers say"

I think It'll be slightly more powerful in the end but we'll never see the benefit as

1. B and C list teams will be working on it.
2. in 3 years, next gen HD will make it look like a Wii (comparably)
3. The tablet streaming/extra screen will suck cpu and gpu time.

I'll get one for HD Nintendo games but in terms of 3rd party support, I expect worst than Wii support after 2 years.

Then can you explain how developing for Wii U is harder than PS3?

The toolsets could not be ready or fully fleshed out yet. Combined with a lack of familiarity, it could make things more challenging.

Maybe if they were just now starting to work with PS3, things would be different, but they've had 6 years to learn that system already.

Oh man, Nintendo's E3 Press Conference is going to give some great posts and gifs here. Can't wait for the comparisons between Wii U and 360/PS3.

Best part of last years E3 were the claims of 360/PS3 footage looking worse than 360/PS3 footage.

This would take cheap and outdated to extreme levels though. They'd be further than a generation behind this time and I just can't believe they would go that far.

it's Nintendo. They would sell this outdated HD thing for $399, and take $300 profit out of it.

Gameindustrybiz is not same trash tabloid fan made website. And the dude who wrote this has been in the industry for 30 years. I can't imagine they would just make this up.

The reality is the credibility of this rumor isn't going to do shit all to the credibility of the writer. There is almost zero accountability in video game journalism. If this turns out to be a shit rumor, no one is going to remember it.

I don't doubt the "journalist" has a source or person they've talked to, I just doubt any real journalism has taken place here.

Look at the site archive, this is the only exclusive rumour article GI.biz have published in the last 2 years (as far back as it goes).

Certainly doesn't seem like a site that throws out crazy rumours.

So again either multiple sources in the industry have decided to tell the same lie or the west coast editor of GI.biz (who has worked for EA, Capcom etc.) just decided to make up a totally bullshit story with imaginary sources.

Except theres other developers who said it wasn't weaker. What of those sources?

Really, all this is, is bullshit. I don't expect it to be considerably more powerful than the 360 or PS3, it's probably going to be a little more powerful, and multiple developers are putting versions of games announced for 360 and PS3 to this system, so it's not going to be underpowered in any meaningful way if they're willing to do that.

360/PS3 level power is fine, as long as it's within range of 360/PS3 level pricing.

Best thing about this thread are the defenders throwing up pics of E3 Zelda Wii U

I remember when that was first shown at E3, heard a lot of comments "that looks WORSE than 360/PS3" games and now this article comes out, now it looks like there's your reason why.

So its about technology, and not games?

Damn, I've completely misunderstood this video gaming thing.

Does Nintendo's lack of appropriate gigahertz so offend you?

I personally feel that better games come from better technology. I am not demanding that you agree. And I never claimed to be offended by anything. You're such a sensationalist, but everyone already knew that.

I just am not going to buy outdated technology for premium prices, and I won't buy games with new game costs that could have been made on previous generation hardware. That's me. You are you.

It wouldn't be impossible to imagine.
Just around a month ago, many sites a piece of news posted by Eurogamer, based on a few badly Photshopped images someone made (about Vita games been leaked right before that Sony "event" that ended been just a few YouTube videos).

And "because Eurogamer is a good source", they ran it. And it was a "rumor/leak" so, why not?!
Even when hours before all the sites posted it, GAF (and other online forums) already knew it was fake.

Heck, I've been the source of a few pieces of news (mostly movie related) and while it was true info and with "evidence"; not much was needed in order to run the news (just the information and if I wanted my real name or a fake name).
Was Eurogamer (or any of the other sites) reputation ruined? Nah.. the site's still good, nice and they continue posting news, reviews, etc.

Actually, those comments were directed at the sizzle reel of third party games... that was using PS3/360 footage.
LAWL

It rendered what it rendered, looking as good as it did, because it was rendered. All games use tricks, tools and techniques to achieve their IQ.

His argument wasn't anything technical or specific. Simply that Resident Evil 4 'cheated', whatever the hell that means, to look the way it did on the GameCube, because the hardware architecture normally renders games 'kiddy' and nothing like that.

He also though Wind Waker looked horrific, and desperately wanted Apple to release a console alongside Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

He was a moron.

No doubt his reason was completely wrong, but at the time, I could envision even technically minded people referring to RE4 as "cheating" to achieve what it did. It was the first game I'm aware of to render in such a low resolution with dead space letterboxes taking up 40-50% of the screen.

I think that, in the end, the graphics displayed by the WiiU will be better than those on PS3. Like 3DS graphics are better than on PSP. I would be really surprised if not.

I actually knew a guy who argued Resident Evil 4 on my GameCube was 'cheating' to look as good as it did, because the hardware normally renders games looking more 'kiddy'.

I usually don't post in these threads and I know you've been quoted to death here but I just wanted to say this line truly made my day. Thanks!

did you call Nintendo shit?

No I call people bickering about a quote about POWER, shit. Do the people discussing it to death even know why they care so much about it? There have been like 5 seperate threads about random sources quoting the powerlevel of the WiiU. So childish.

He was a moron.

Did he die?

Also, I am confused. If it has a POWERPC at high clock, 1GB RAM and a 4830-ish GPU there is no way its worse than the 360 or PS3. Just no way.
So those specs might be false?

And why wont the devs just give out the frigin specs???? "LESS GRAFIXS" doesnt say anthing really.
But with the tablet controller then yea maybe they are throttling down hardware. But is it possible to go that cheap? Architechures have gotten so much better.

Also, the Zelda demo is in an enclosed space, 2 charachters.
Crysis 2 does same awesome lightning imo, so does KZ3 and Uncharted 3. Textures are nothing special. The Zelda demo is at 360/PS3 level. Not that its bad, I find PS3 games very impressive even though I game on PC.

Would have been nice.

Nintendo really needs to modernize their online component if this is true. I mean, that was the case before, but it becomes that much more important if they're not even going to bother with the graphical power.

They're also in an awkward position due to the controller. I think the Wii U is probably more powerful than PS3 or 360, but if this is true that means the devs can't really make the graphics look as good thanks to having to push pixels to an extra display.

I hope Nintendo knows what they're doing here. Will be nice once E3 is done and over with and we have a much clearer picture of things.

At this point let's just wait for E3. If the rumor cycle continues we'll be down to Atari 2600 comparisons.

Exclusive first look of Rockstar's Table Tennis 2, only for Wii U!
OkibI.png

I dunno, they may have to dial back on the detail. Can the Wii U handle that many sprites onscreen at once?

I don't really care about any of these rumors but the OMG LOOK AT THESE PRETTY ZELDA GIFS posts are fucking dumb. Its like they don't actually put any thought into anything, plug their ears and say NANANANNANANAA.

Just dumb. A baked demo means nothing.

People only find things interesting when they're embellished and hyperbolized. If you're this upset over this article though you probably bail out of any WiiU thread until launch.

lol true. but i'm just sick of all the criticism u know. whether it's true or not, it's like all it's about is tearing Nintendo down, just because they aren't like the other 2 companies. i honestly believe that w/e type of architecture they're using, they'll be able to take full advantage and w/e third party that will push for it will too. all this power comparison is pure jealousy IMO. third parties (not all of course) are so threatened by Nintnedo, but yet they've done NOTHING to prove themselves a more valuable asset (still talking about threatened 3rd parties)

I seriously did not expect to see this kind of article from gamesindustry.biz. It just seems to have a lot more editorializing than what I usually see from there.

And all these rumors are pointing in roughly the same direction. Nintendo is releasing a console which competes against PS3/360, not the next batch of consoles.

It was ridiculous to expect otherwise. Nintendo didn't try to ramp up expectations at E3. Reggie merely said WiiU would "tick that box". And Nintendo has never published a current-gen game. Expecting them to leap up and grab the next-gen brass ring in 2012 is absurd.

I've been studying the Wii U and it seems like it doesn't have the powerful graphics. That seems to be the issue.
