Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

His dead soul review is arguably the best review on GB

Cheers.

As long as rorie can still pet the puppies.

Screened Door was pretty much my only film/TV podcast. It was a train wreck at times, but I always though it was a good listen.

How am I supposed to find good indie films now :/

Kermode and Mayo's film show doesn't dedicate as much time to indie films as I would like, but they do review them and it's infinitely more entertaining than Screened's podcast ever was.

Then again, I'm a film student, so I like more intellectual discussions about films. I still think the Screened podcast was painfully lacking in entertainment though, which is why I stopped listening well over a year ago.

This is what I really don't get, it was 50/50 and Alex was the one kept? I'm guessing Rorie wanted to leave.

I doubt that. From Rorie's posts the day the move was announced it felt like they just let him out to dry.

The economics behind the Whiskey split up must have been pretty bad considering all that's happened. None of the sites really could get enough video or writing content. Screened was being held together only by Rorie after Alex's split, Tested aside from Wesley never had enough blog posts and couldn't compete with other tech sites, and AnimeVice should have just been converted to a message board/wiki site only.

I honestly expect Giantbomb to be gone in 1-2 years when CBS-i looks at their numbers and concludes that Gamespot and Giantbomb can be merged.

Good point. That's GB's main problem. It can go long stretches with absolutely no new content; hence no reason at all to go to the site, no page views etc. Sure they'll post up trailers and stuff but those things are on every other site out there. If there's no personality based content up on the site for a week, there's no reason at all to go there. The regular news/trailers/rumors stuff they just can't beat the other bigger websites when it comes to churning new articles out everyday. I do get worried that it's eventually just going to be gamespot.com/giantbomb.

It's their own fault if that happens. Davison seems like he's giving them a fair shake.

Would that be so bad? If it was just those guys producing the same sort of content, I don't care if it stays Giant Bomb or becomes part of Gamespot etc in the future.

To be honest, that would be pretty cool. I never really understood why they bother with trailers etc. Seemed to be a token gesture to pad the site out. If GS could cover all of that so these guys could just do podcasts and personality based videos, then I'd view that as an improvement.

I don't even care about their reviews. I don't care about any reviews, but especially on GB where they talk so in-depth about games on the podcast. If they stopped doing reviews in favour of more video content, that'd be fine by me too.

Really, all I need from GB is video content and the podcast!

Agreed, the idea that GB needs to be up to date with the latest reviews and shit like that proves they don't really know why they have fans.

I've always wished that they would allow you to filter out certain types of front page posts, which I think they actually did on some of their TV apps. I can't remember the last time I watched one of the trailers they post. They really just serve to clutter up the video feed when I'm trying to find original stuff.

It wouldn't be so terrible if they got their own nice looking page with the GB logo, an archive of all their videos and a little mini blog where they could post all their new videos. But that's the best case scenario of them getting merged. My real worry is that they'd basically just become Gamespot editors and have Giant Bomb cease to exist.

I agree with you though, I don't go to GB for trailers, I don't care about the PR that they post up, hell I don't go to GB for any sort of gaming news period. I have GAF for that, their personalities are why I love the site and why I check there daily. It's just frustrating that all too often I can check the website multiple times a day for 3-4 days straight and have nothing new at all. At this point, we all know that's how it is on GB but I have to imagine that's quite a turn off for the random people who just happen to stumble across GB and like what they see, but stop coming because they check a few days and the website seems dead.

The video section of the site will hopefully get an update. All of the different types of video being under "subscriber" is so awfully cluttered and goes against what Dave tries to achieve with the rest of the site.

They need categories for every different series of video they do. So bad.

Then it would be easier to set up filters!

Also, does ANYONE use their wiki? Cool idea, but I just go to Wiki when I wiki a game. I realise GB has more trivia... but I just never use it.

Those were so sad I thought he was joking.

There is a reason why Rorie stopped tweeting.

The crazy thing is I feel like Screened was the beginning of the end. The higher ups at Whiskey must have hoped that they would be bought out by somebody at an earlier point. The split up feels more and more like it was a bail out. Screened, Tested, and AnimeVice basically were for their domain names.

That's why they brought Patrick on and that's why Alex basicly switched to Giantbomb. Between Brad, Jeff, and Ryan (Vinny is doing a ton of other stuff) when was the last time you saw them put up a blog post? Sure they do reviews but you never see any content or commentary from them besides that.

I legitimately really like the site's Wiki, both for interesting entries on obscure games and the sheer number of objects, locations and concepts available as reference points. That was the original draw of the site for me actually, more so than the personalities.

They are still in the early days of getting set up at CBSi. Still getting the proper set ups and workflows to create their content. Isn't it just a tad early to start throwing up your arms about a lack of new updates?

From my understanding they're currently just trying to get back what they had going at Whiskey Media and then from there building upward to allow themselves to put out more content than ever before. They are the personalities behind these videos but it all doesn't just come out of thin air. There's a reason their original content comes out as fresh and natural as it does. Giant Bomb has always been very technically sound when it comes to their production line which allows them to do the random and dumb things they love to do on the fly.

It sucks waiting but I think we need to give them a little more time.

Yup, love the Wiki. Helps me out a lot personally.

I don't think that's true at all.

Despite the doomsayers, Tested was bought for Will and Norm. The mythbuster guys seem like they wanted a site under their brand, but didn't want to make it their full time job.

I don't know what BermanBraun wanted with Screened. If they aren't keeping Rorie around, and Alex is gone, I don't even know what that site is. When they bring in new people are they going to keep the old content around? I can't imagine the wiki or community were that valuable.

I know it's easier said than done, but how was none of this taken care of before GB got there? They've said that the negotiations were happening during December, how could CBSi not start acquiring the necessary equipment for the guys? From the little they've said about it, it just seems like they are already getting slowed down by bureaucracy.

Their wiki and their achievement tracker is great. It's great to see how tips and info about .

I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason why Giantbomb was bought was for the Wiki and attachment stuff alone especially with Wikia becoming a huge presence in the gaming community.

Plus they require almost no staffers since wiki's basically create themselves.

Yeah because they want to have those guys focus on the video stuff. But, if they want to be focused on video, personality based content. They need to have enough of it to make their website worth going to more than a couple times a week (or sometimes less even). I just think the lack of content is really off-putting to newcomers to the site, it provides no incentive for them to regularly check back. I worry about it in the sense of how that does for their traffic when people only really need to check once or twice a week sometimes to get all the content.

I understand this. But that's us as fans of GB who are probably going to be there no matter what, we understand the behind the scenes situation (although let's be fair, GB struggles with regular content sometimes even when they were set up fully at Whiskey). I worry more looking from the perspective of them trying to grow and attract more people to the site, because I don't want them to just disapeer into Gamespot one day because their traffic doesn't justify the cost of it being it's own thing.

If that was part of it, they've got a marathon ahead of themselves. The difference in quantity and quality of information in most Wikia gaming pages and related GB wiki pages is staggering. The Dark Souls wikia or wikidot has just about everything you could possibly know about that game. Whereas the GB wiki is just general information.

I love the Mythbusters crew but I don't believe that for a second. Jaime, Adam, and M5 are trying to expand their reach outside of discovery. Part of that I believe is they are starting to see the end of their time with Mythbusters and I also believe part of that is a reaction to the cannon accident. I read something a while back that discover was thinking of canceling the show just because of that incident and Discover is starting to move towards cheaper reality shows simply due to the cost of production.

Unless you are invested into the Giantbomb community there is no reason to return to the site. Plus they stupidly included the mobile site as a premium feature and stopped support for their iPhone app. How many features have they introduced and dropped(Big Red Phone and Happy Hour)?

I feel like they want to have the output of a Joystiq but the quality of "A Life Well Wasted". You can't do both.

If everyone recalls, I was predicting that we would be content-light until mid-April, and it definitely looks like I'm going to be proven right.

Vinny now having a son is only going to slow things down for the time being, as he's the production guy. Until they get things like PAX East and the DB split finished, I doubt they have the time to be creating any major new content. Besides which, I get the impression that the office they're in is only temporary while their final office is being worked on. Then there's all equipment they have to reacquire.

Frankly, I'm almost more surprised that they've produced as much content as they have.

All this stuff isn't an immediate process. I trust that they'll get back into the swing of things, and I'm half-expecting them to bust out an Endurance Run this summer as an apology to their fans for sticking with them through the lean months of the transition.

As for Whiskey, from what industry blogs are saying it was bought almost solely for the Whiskey media technology which powered the platform. The sites were just a bonus.

That sort of mirrors my thoughts on it all.

I suppose some just won't have the patience for that. It's the internet, people are complaining, what's new.

But these problems have been going on for a long time but I feel like people were hesitant to address them because they were a small site. Now they have big backing and they should be able to deliver.

In the Giantbomb fire drill video you could see Dave is working with the engineers on a complete site revamp so I'll wait to see but they do owe their community to deliver. Especially when they were taking in money.

Also a 20-40 minute Flipcam video should not be your quality bar.

If you want to go from small to big TWiT is the perfect case study.

Dumb Flipcam videos of an earthquake drill is part of why I love Giant Bomb. For now, I'm okay with it.

That's just me though.

It's not like the acquisition was a sudden thing. If you look at the period following the BLLSL2 until about early February, they were cranking out a LOT of content. Think about it. All the Jar Times, Random PC Games, Breaking Brads, Lantern Runs, Load Our Last Saves, Radio Dave, not to mention an entire ER were produced in that period.

Then things slowed down as Whiskey/GB got ready to be sold. It may not have been visible, but that certainly had to have an effect.

I expect that once things get back to normal, we'll return to how things were between October and February.

It was also a relatively slow period, gaming-wise, so we didn't get QLs, which are easier content to put up. But complaints about the speed of updates aren't new. During a lull last year we had bright minds comparing tested's 5 minute app of the day videos to what GB was putting out.

Having a transition period is no problem, but the lack of communication is. There should be a daily thing on what's going on.

I don't know that there's a lack of communication. They still put out weekly podcasts, they did 5 QLs + QL EX + Earthquake video + TNT + Brad Doom + Mondays videos last week. What exactly are you missing?

Wait you people feel like there's been less content? I've been overwhelmed by all the premium vids and have quite a bit to catch up on.
I'm currently chomping at the bit for the Doom II Breaking Brad archive. I was at work while that was on and just watched parts of it. Even the 30-40 minutes I watched were glorious.

For a personality driven site I feel they go radio silent way too much.

Really? I mean did you listen to the radio show at all? They even delved into the financial implications and how to keep Giant Bomb afloat while at CBSi. Normal sites don't just air out their inner politics like that for the sake of their community.

You're talking crazy talk duder.

How to Build a Bomb was awesome but that was a completely different situation. I don't think they should feel obligated to update everyone on a daily basis. That's kind of an unreasonable expectation.
You guys are like

only a bunch of men
