I played an embarrassing amount of Doom 2 in my day. So that influences my opinion of it. In short, I love it.
Jeff's opinion on Doom 2 is surprising. I played just as much Doom 1, and Doom 2 is far superior. And the main reason I think it's better is one of the things they seem not to appreciate - the super shotgun. ALWAYS use the super shotgun. The only time you don't use it is when you only have one shotgun shell left.
Also, the enemies in Doom 2 are better. You still have all the enemies from Doom 1, so it's not like you're losing anything.

Jeff is totally right that the level design in 2 sucks compared to the first game, though, and in Doom level design is the most important thing.

I think the middle third of Doom 2 - when you're supposed to "on Earth" - is weak. The part Brad is playing. That's supposed to be Earth. But the final third is great. Those are some of the best Doom levels.
Now, if you're counting the later-released 4th episode of Doom 1, then those levels are really good too. Thy Flesh Consumed. I remember back in the day, before there was anything like Neogaf to tell me what was coming out, I happened upon a new release of Doom 1, with that new episode. One of the happiest days of my young life.

I have no great fondness for PC games of the early 90s, have limited interest in id and FPSes in general, and in fact played more Doom on the 32X than anywhere else. Despite all of that, I have an inexplicable fondness for Doom 1 and 2. Everything about them just look and sound so perfect.
