Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

A video from March 27th popped up on reddit today showcasing a dynamic event that revolved around the Kodan. I searched through the thread to see if anyone else had posted it but couldn't find anything so here it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFCPscAsR0Y

It doesn't really show much, outside of the beginning battle against an NPC humanoid I've never seen before. Here is the concept art of what appears to be its race: http://cghub.com/images/view/163287/ & the humanoid in question: http://i.imgur.com/mz0kA.jpg

But the really interesting thing, for me, is how the place seems WIP. Both sexes of the Kodan look exactly the same - though who knows if that is a design issue they are going to resolve or not.

There's not a lot of differences between male and female polar bears, to be honest. They took the same approach to the Charr. Rather than take the Blizzard approach ("Add tits and pigtails"), ArenaNet seems to have taken a look at actual sexual dimorphism and taken a more realistic route.

wait, so we've confirmed that amazon will not have it?

They said that the wiki page (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:Stephane_Lo_Presti/GW2_prepurchase_retailers_list) may change as time goes on, so right now we can't say yes or no for sure.

The only place that we've seen WILL have it is Gamestop. Whether that changes, we just don't know. I hope it does, I'd really rather not deal with Gamestop considering they're just a shite company and their reputation for shady behavior like opening product, taking more reservations than they can supply, etc.

I see Luna Atra updated, grr!

Also wtf, they got rid of the barrier elite for this weird invincibility one!

Renewed Focus 135 Focus making you invulnerable and recharging your virtues.

I'd like to know what it looks like.

EDIT: I found a video, but it looks like it doesn't have any sort of particle effect or effect to it whatsoever, so I think it's not in the game yet.

thanks, guess i'll just wait and hope some other retailers get it

I'm just going to go to GameStop within the next couple days and pre-order the pre-purchase, so I'm guaranteed one. Then I'll go back on the 10th and pay the rest of the pre-purchase and get whatever pre-purchase box they give out, if any.

We'll see how it goes, but I wouldn't put it past GS to somehow screw people over with this.

Pretty unlikely to change, as they've said GameStop is currently the only one offering it.

@geekcheck Currently only Gamestop will be offering the CE. ^MK

ok guys, when the first thread on gaf popped up i was amazed by the idea of dynamic events

for those of you that actually got a chance of playing the beta, does the dynamic events system lives up to the expectations?

do you really feel like you are into a living world and not in some kind of theme park?

what actually become reality of what arenanet promised and what not?

Read that. It's how I feel about the game exactly.

Jeff didn't like it. :(

Jeff also bought a lifetime subscription to STO. Giantbomb is not a good place to go for opinions on MMO's. They do not play them on a regular basis like the fans of the genre. Good or bad, there are significantly better places to read.

nice!

do you think they'll be having some form of open beta without having to purchase the game?
i've some friends on the fence on this one, mostly because they got tired of purchasing a new MMORPG every time one shows up...

They've said they will have other ways to get into the beta events. They will probably still send out some invites and give some to sites to give away.

Edit:Don't have time to watch this right now but here is an hour and 45 minutes of Lewis B playing Ranger PvP. 0.0 That's a damn movie!

Watched a video last night where a dude with a Charr thief went through the skill system and unlocked some things, including Charrzooka as his elite skill. If I'm understanding right, he had the ability to unlock a handful of elites tied to his class, or a couple tied to his race. Charrzooka apparently replaces all five of your weapon skill slots with powerful ranged attacks, regardless of class? So that even a Charr caster could take that elite along and start firing off rockets?

I think there's going to end up being considerably more depth to race/skill selection than it seems at first glance.

So I guess there wasn't a beta in late March? Or I didn't get an invite.

There was a Beta, you just didn't get an invite. You're not alone though, lots of GAFers didn't.

The biggest selling point to get people onboard for GW2? "There's no subscription, once you buy the box you can play it forever." People used to the usual MMO business model hear that and suddenly it makes everything okay.

The Manifesto video also works wonders, and now that enough people have seen the game in action, we can verify that the claims they make in the video are true:

Yes, Charrzooka is a Charr Racial Elite skill, so all Charr players have access to it regardless of profession. However, to your second question, ArenaNet has stated that the Racial elite skills aren't as powerful as profession-based elite skills and are more for looking cool and adding flavor. They won't be completely gimped, as you can see from the video, but they won't be so effective that everyone filters down to one race that has the best racials, i.e. No "Everyone rolls undead for Will of the Forsaken" in GW2.

Also worth mentioning that Racial elite skills cannot be used in Competitive PVP, but are available in PVE and WvW.

Anyone notice they've started putting milestones on their facebook timeline today?

Could it be..? the final milestone reveal is upon us...?

I assume we'll be able to prepurchase the ce on gamestop's website?

Edit: Interestingly enough, I already see it on their website

From what I've read in the reddit thread, pre-purchase on the gamestop website is not valid. You must go to the store to qualify it as a pre-purchase.

Just got back from Gamestop and pre-ordered the game. Will head back on the 10th and pre-purchase it in full, but I wanted to make sure I get one.

Indeed a sad day, wonder if Gamestop paid them for the exclusive...

As dirty as Gamestop is already, I don't think we need to delve into conspiracy theory-esque deeds to make them look bad. They're doing that well enough on their own.

Oh, didn't realize we could do this. Will do that today

My feeds tell me impressions of the fan day are going up. Not in a position to check them at the moment. Anything interesting?

This sounds ideal; actually more and more clever the more I think about it. Maybe some of them will be particularly suited for certain scenarios or quests, be useful for soloing, or just more fun than a more effective class-based elite.

Plus, I'm really liking the idea that you can immediately tell just by looking at someone in your party that they'll have those certain elites available (since all the races are completely distinct at a glance). Maybe especially in cases where you're doubling up on a class in your party, but one of them is a Charr, "hey, grab Charzooka before we head out!"

I think it's because GS really the only major game retailer in the US. Either way, i'm sure we'll be able to enjoy the CE all the same.

Also, here's a better look at the Rytlock figurine

What I said is goddamn.

That's a lot of versatility tied to a single skill, and from what we've seen it's ammo-based, not time based, so you can theoretically whip that bad boy out and really nuke armadillos with it. That much versatility in the hands of a player who knows how to use it is going to ruin somebody's day, whether the numbers are slightly nerfed or not.
Indeed. Were there any elites in GW1 that actually became multiple skills when you used them?

Yeah, don't get me wrong, Charrzooka looks like it'll have some practical applications. It could certainly be a healthy dose of damage and maybe give a player who is rocking two melee weapon sets an 'emergency ranged mode' if needed. And really, it goes to the core of what GW2 is about; player skill trumping statistical superiority. Just because the Charrzooka isn't as powerful as other elite skills doesn't mean that in the right hands and the right situation, I can't be devastating. It provides...
  • single target fire attack,
  • a conal knockback,
  • a heat-seeking rocket (which could be very useful against very evasive targets),
  • a Knockdown with a backwards jump, and
  • an AOE.

Haha, yeah. I was on the fence about getting the CE or not, but that statue is just... damn. Even if it sits on a shelf and collects dust, I'll see it every so often and know I was there at the beginning to properly honor GW2 with my patronage.

Sit on a shelf and collect dust? More like build a shrine for it and worship at it daily, amirite?

ALRIGHT ANDROSS, ALL RANGE MODE!

Fuck I need to do this still!

Just put 25 bucks down for my ce pre order. The girl at first said she didn't think they were taking them anymore so I almost had to choke her.

HYPE!

What really scares me about this, is how are they controlling inventory? With ArenaNet saying how sparse the CE will be, I could see GS easily taking everyone's money with pleasure, then come launch day, they won't get the appropriate amount to cover pre-orders.

I know, maybe a little "conspiracy theory" or tin foil hat, but I just don't trust GS at all.

As much as I want that statue, I'm going directly through ArenaNet with the DD version x 2.

Same :(

Alas I'm going the other way. Zavvi is worse than dogshit for delivery knowing them I'd be waiting way past release for my CE, not to mention, my code to play the full retail release. I'd rather not risk it and just buy the digital deluxe. :(
