I wonder how it fits in with the other modular buildings. I love the self referential lego sets, like that truck where they're unloading little boxes of the same lego set they're in. Would be cool to take the same ideas from this and make one to fit in with the other buildings so the minifigs can go shopping in it.

Hey, same here! Although I am 13 years out of college now. Never used my art degree for anything until recently (designing my brother's theater company logo and artwork for their shows), and have been a retail slave since my first job.

If there was a Lego store in CT, I would be on that like white on rice, a glass of milk, and a paper plate in a snow storm. But I think I might have a shot at this visual department job they are posting for their offices that are only 20 minutes from home.
 
For whoever was mentioning that nanoblocks are cheap, aren't they hard on the eyes and hands to build? They look super tiny and I have big hands. =P

I have a pair of tweezers that I use when I work with the little 1x1 blocks (mainly to pull them out of the container I have them in and to set them in odd places). I was surprised at how easy they are to handle though. I mean, my hands aren't huge, though.
 
Finished the fire brigade. Several nice parts to the top floor and roof. I really liked the textured brick panels, definitely putting that technique in my pocket. And the date sign was crazy, still can't really get my head around it.

The furniture on the first floor was cute but not as much of a wow as when I did the VW camper which had similar little features.

This might not be ideal for ships that you need to attach at the bottom, but I was able to use the studs on the side of the 30359a to attach to the rear of the models - if you use the single stud end up you can then angle them as well so they look to be flying instead of just hovering.

There's probably plenty of other options out there but I had these from a few STAPs from a set that my brother picked up at some point and found they worked well for me.

Thanks. I had one of those 30359a and that worked well with a white radar dish. Will pick up some more. Need a better way to attach to the bottom of the ships, making do with little hinges for now

I use 1x1 transparent cylinders on top of a dish.

The Marvel sets are available in John Lewis in the UK now. Picked up Wolverine, Magneto and Deadpool :)

This is a cool story. And that's how they choose the last builder - you build it for the kids. I'm sure the judges/overseers play a role, too...But I remember watching a YouTube video about it a while back. It's pretty incredible stuff actually.
 
20% on Lego at our local TRU, caved and bought the X-Wing. Awesome build, didn't expect it to be so nice and big and full of little surprises in terms of building :)

About four hours or so of work on the dual Fire Brigade and Town Hall build.

It is really odd building them both joined. It threw me off a few times since I am looking at it as one huge model and not two separate models. Like the two walls that touch.

Very fun so far, but this will take me a few days. Have lots of footage for the stop motion build, but trying to find a new angle since the buildings are getting larger. It is tough to keep it in view and still have a workable space to put the other bricks in.

Cool story, but I am nowhere near a master builder. I am more a mediocre builder. I have lots of ideas on things to build, but lack the pieces to pull them off well. If I had a Lego store nearby I would go nuts with pick-a-brick to get bricks to make some of my ideas. For now it is just rebuilding sets and having mini figures kill each other.

Do you have Fire Brigade yet? If not, order it ASAP. Just a sexy set that will be disappearing very, very soon. Town Hall is new and will be around a couple of years, and is nowhere near as cool to put together as the Fire Brigade.

Debating on what to get myself in May. Grand Emporium, or R2D2. If Grand Emporium and Pet Shop are ever in stock during the Toys R Us sale that is a no brainer, but neither are. Although, both Shuttle Expedition and VW Camper are in stock at the moment, and that is tempting as all hell.
 
Nah, I have no space or money to get into modulars. I am going to buy Haunted House, most likely, so need to save up and reserve shelf space for that.

I was the same way with modulars, but once I got the bug I am stuck. And you get an insane number of pieces for the price. I just have them on top of a bookcase. Just enough clearance before they hit the ceiling.

Pretty much same here. I've only bought the Fire Brigade at this point, but I really want a second set. I'm waiting for either double points or a crazy TRU bogo sale. Too bad they sell out at TRU so quickly.

Toys n bricks has a mini modulars competition on at the moment too. My son has me ordering pieces from bricklink for him so he can enter. He's only 10! He built a more modern fire engine to go with the fire brigade too. The old one was annoying him :)

I was impressed at how detailed and how big this was! I'm thinking of getting Lightning McQueen now too, as these Cars Master Builder sets seem fun if this one was any indication.

I didn't see a source for this deal in the thread post so I'm not sure if it's real or not.

I would most definitely make the trip down to the Bellevue LEGO store for this. I'd probably be able to get a good chunk of the ME Normandy MOC pieces, assuming they have them of course.

Excellent. Unfortunately I'll be near the LEGO store tomorrow and plan to do the pick a brick while I'm in town.

Perhaps I'll hold off on the majority of my pieces until the sale. I'm right on the verge of getting my first VIP $10 discount, too!

Yeah, I'll grab a picture over lunch. I'm looking to grab Himeji Deluxe after I finish this one up. But I'm also in the market for an airbrush + compressor, so I need to decide where to spend my hobby money this month, haha.
 
Just received the Mini-Modulars set and Grand Emporium in the mail. I am now completely hooked on the modulars. So I've got a couple of questions that I'm hoping that someone here can answer:

Any ideas as to when Fire Brigade may disappear completely? I'd like to make this set my next priority since, out of all the current modulars, it's slated to go OOP first. I've bought a TON of LEGO sets over the past month and I'd really be pushing my luck with my wife if I were to buy Fire Brigade too soon. So I'd like to wait a bit before pulling the trigger on this one, but not too long.

Also, after building the Mini-Modular version of Cafe Corner, I am obsessed with getting the larger version, but there's no way I'm going to pay the prices that they're fetching on eBay. So I'm thinking of using Bricklink to get the individual pieces and put it together myself. I've never used Bricklink before, so are there any tips/secrets that anyone can suggest before I commit to this? Any idea as to what the total estimated cost of this set would be? Should I expect any difficulties getting any particular bricks with this set?

It seems to me that the modulars tend to use more basic and common bricks than other themes such as Star Wars, so I figured that I wouldn't have as much trouble getting bricks for any of the modulars. I thought that a modular would be a good first experience with Bricklink.
 
I got my sets yesterday (Falcon and Advent Calendar) While the initial plan was to open a few of the sets a day on the calendar I quickly destroyed the entire thing. Some of the little models I did not bother with but there were some really cool mini builds in there. For 20 bucks it was a no brainer, especially with all the extra pieces I have now.

The Falcon is going to be a lot of fun. Can't wait to get into it this weekend.

Speaking of substitution elements, the Cafe Corner could not be re-released again today without a reasonable amount of reworking and substitution elements. Our bricks are constantly evolving and improving which can cause issues when trying to stay true to an original design. For example, we no longer have the molds for the doors which were used for both the corner and side door. Our substitution options for these doors would be 1 brick taller which would affect the look and build of the entire set. The wall elements used in the mid-floor now have extra support structures which look slightly different than the originals. Our 1x6x1 arches have changed as well as several other elements.

So far all of the modular buildings with the possible exception of Market Street have lived in the market for an average of 3 years. Cafe Corner was retired with the launch of the Grand Emporium. Considering that our standard retail range usually lasts 6 months to 2 years, I believe there has been a reasonable amount of time to purchase each of the modulars.

Unfortunately this does not help those of you who missed out on the Cafe Corner and now want to buy it. As a fellow fan, I too am struggling to balance bricklink and Ebay LEGO purchases with maintaining a mortgage and relationship :)

All I can recommend is to keep your eyes open for bargains (craigslist, yard sales and word of mouth through friends) and keep up the optimism. I'm not sure I'll ever get all the sets I've always wanted...but I'm not sure that's such a bad thing...
