Game Informer May 2012 Cover revealed: Halo 4

Why would we play as the Didact? Pretty sure he's the main antagonist of this new trilogy...

lol

He won't even be the prime ennemy by the end of Halo 4. There is no chance the Universe s still full of Forerunners, hat's too big to swallow after we've had 5 games in which it was said they wer exctinct.

Didact, Promoetheans, Librarian and some followers, Master Builder and that's it.
Halo deals in Life creation these days, so if 343i needs Forerunners they will build them using whatver reason they find fit.

Halo 4 needs to introduce the new menace, and my best guess is the Master Builder. he fits nicely with the Didact path, represents a good intersection between past Halo and future halo, can easily be represented as being controlled by Precursors and with followers that are flood infected. Didact won't be introduced carrying a rose in the mouth, he's a total badass and a vengeful one but a ennemy he's not, he simply has his own agenda and will have been around too long to simply stand by and watch the Chief deal with everything.

Didact is here to shake things up, and not let the story get simplified to Chief kicks dark new foes. He will have more lverage than the Arbiter in the story if only because he's been planned since the beginning of the new trilogy when Arbiter was meant to rinse the palette and bring new gameplay.

The Reclaiming, the vengeance, the millenia long fight and obscure destiny of sentient species.

Going into Halo 5 /6, with the help of greg Bear 343i has the chance to make ridiculously crazy things happen. The story is going to explore the origin of life, its design, its purpose, or lack of.

Where's the best place I can read about all of this? Between the Didact, Forerunners, Prometheans, Librarian, etc I'm getting lost here.

Well, there is Slightly Live website :

www.forwarduntodawn.com

he is thourough in his analyses.

Best is to read Cryptum/Primordium and Glasslands.

New editions of Fall Of Reach, The Flood, First Strike have each an added ending châpter with hints towards the new trilogy with subsential info in one of them.

Ghosts of onyx preludes Glasslands.

Contact Harvest is a joke.

Cole Protocole is Halo Blaxploitation.

I play videogames for the graphics!

I play music for the chicks!

That was a misinterpretation of the comment; she said it was the best looking game anyone on the team had worked on.
But we've seen Halo 4. It looks nice and SP will be nicer. And then there is all the shit that's gonna blow around and the new take on SP.

I expect the game to be very nice looking with a great art and fluid animations, the AI will be nice, the levels big, the cinematics crazy.
What I want is a 10hrs campaign at minimum.

Longer campaign > dem graphix

Fixed.

From Halo Wikia. No source though so not sure.

An enhancement to the game is a much longer campaign than the traditional length of most Halo campaigns.

Frankie mentioning big epic environments that eclipse anything in past Halo games gets me excited.

;)

I wonder if "big epic environments" includes bigger battles. IIRC, Bungie said bigger battles for Reach, but we never got anything larger than the biggest fights in Halo 3 (or close to it for that matter).

#Pessimist.

To be more serious, given what Bungie said about Reach and what we got, I'm approaching any claim of "bigger battles" and such with caution.

I'm subscribed to the print version of GI when is it supposed to arrive? Does it come out before the digital version? I really hope it comes on Saturday or today but I'm not holding my breath.

yeah, joke is meant to convey the, well..., I don't know how to say it but Contact Harvest both gives a natural explanation to the war, yet it's a very very very barebone sci-fi book.

Not my favorite but to each his own.
Cryptum got me a boner and a man crush on the Didact.

Yep. There is only this much more this gen games can do in terms of scope.
Stuff like Gears of War 2/3 tons of ennemies is serviceable but doesn't build the legend.

Same for the campaign length. There is longer and there is meant to be long. I want it to be long, even at the cost of reused environments or some backtracking. If part of the game is structured around open world, with additional more corridory missions and the game offers to keep exploring after the credits, its GOTF material for me.

we dont know. could be today, could be tomorrow or even monday (is monday a holiday in the us?).

Would be cool if Halo 4 really was about story and characters. I already played Halo, I want more than that now.

I'll buy a damn 360 again if 343i does right by me!

Isn't Ryan Payton at 343 now ?

Edit: Well looks like he wasn't there for long.

Ryan left because it seems he had misconceptions about how vastly they were going to change the Halo formula. I think Ryan had grand ideas about helping create this wild new Halo that shared the previous games art style and universe but completely altered it's mechanics.

As a fan of the series I'm glad the team has kept the core elements intact, although I can also understand how this might frustrate those who've slightly tired on the franchise. There's going to be lots of change and fresh ideas, as I'm sure we'll all see soon enough with this coverstory, although I doubt they'll be an extravagant departure from the series.

Eh, I disagree. MGS4 is one of the best looking games this gen. Certainly better looking than any Halo game released thus far.

The character models in MGS4 were insanely detailed.

Character models are about the only thing in MGS4 that are definitely above Halo: Reach.

Anything else, Reach trumps it imo.

I think the audio director worked on MGS4. Although there has been some confusion about who is actually composing Halo 4.

They apparently can't announce it yet, either, because of 'contract issues' or something. Maybe it's in the Gameinformer article, though. Would be nice.

Unless something new has happened the last word from Frank was that the composer for Halo 4 was still under wraps.

Yup that would be great.

When an FPS game gets a GI cover with its two main protagonists just looking at you, I can say the devs are not trying to sell you on da big fight first and foremost.

Clearly Halo 4 is a FPS, but it's been said to death changes will abound on how the story is told and the care given to fleshing out characters rather than relying on the tongue-in-cheek approach the first trilogy used.

Well, much is always said about that. Reach was the final straw for me. Such a big and important event in the cannon....and well, let me just say that I can barely remember who the characters were.

Yea. Gon b gud.

Don't care what anyone says, Chief and Cortana are superb as a duo. Chief is just an all around badass character. Defeats impossible odds and walks away like a boss. And Cortana is compassionate, intelligent, hilarious, and downright sexy all in one.

*MAAAYBE* that's an in-game model. I can imagine that. But the DoF (on other shots) adds quite a bit to the look, and that won't be there. No way will the shadows be that good. That lighting is the best I've ever seen on a console; no way will it be that good in when you're playing it. But I feel like everyone ignores the biggest issue - the up-rezzed sub-720p visuals, lack of decent AA, and a sub-30 framerate. I'd bet money that that .gif is not an honest representation of how the game will look when you're playing this fall on the X360.

Those frames are taken straight from a game session. From very early, unpolished code. The game runs at native 720p. Those are the in-game shadows. There is no DOF in those frames. And the DOF is also an in-engine effect that will be used more subtly in 'normal' action. The gif's only 'trickery' is a detached camera -something the player can do in saved films anyway.

You weren't meant to remember the characters, you were meant to 'Remember Reach'.

Ironically all I've done since the game came out is try to repress my memory of Reach. Great campaign, woeful multiplayer. As a multiplayer person predominantly, it was tragic.

I hope 343i craft their own
'SURVIVE'
moment. That genuinely blew my socks off. Doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves, if it was created by Team Ico or Square it'd be held aloft as some holy relic by GAF.

Good job Frank. A detachable camera in saved films was Game Informer's pièce de résistance.

sounds great. just make sure that the game runs better than reach or anniversary.

Thats just...I mean...Its crazy. That right there is some of the best looking graphics I have ever seen and I still have hard time believing you are telling the truth (which just shows how fucking good job you guys done).
