Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Well, from Smash Bros to Smash Bros. Melee they added 13 new playable characters
from Smash Bros. Melee to Smash Bros. Brawl they added 11 new playable characters

I think it's safe to expect around 10 to 15 new playable characters on Smash Bros. Wii U :P

Edit: that... and the fact that they can add even more characters by DLC to boost sales

...Flashy random number generator? Please explain.
I was being facetious really. What I mean though is I hit random buttons while random things happen on the screen. :)

I know, I deserve it :)

I'd love to see Travis Touchdown added to Smash, even though I'm not really his biggest fan (own the first NMH but not the second). My reason? It's be Nintendo essentially saying to third parties, "hey.. check this out. Suda treated us well, and now we're pushing his characters like we do our own. His game is now a part of the Nintendo universe, and our crazy-rabid fans will be more likely to buy his games in the future. Take the dindamn hint."

Yeah like bgassassin said. Didn't work for Metal Gear. Kojima played Nintendo for a fiddle on that one. Konami got free advertising for a game on a competitor's console and I'm sure Nintendo felt like their relationship was improving.

Besides wouldn't that smack a bit of "Nintendo playing favorites" with developers? All that would do would turn third parties away, like apparently any course of action Nintendo could take. Well, other than just outright paying some of them to exist (and even then you run the risk of Sega taking their MarioSonic Olympic welfare check and blowing it on a gritty Golden Axe reboot.)

I say the best strategy is still to make an immensely popular console, and then make really bad games for it, so third parties are no longer competing with Nintendo on Nintendo's platforms. It's absurd, yes. But so is ignoring the market leader, so...

I keep saying: fucking cheap-ass figurines. With NFC download inside. (Alberto's idea)

Figurines need to fit into Nintendo's business model somehow.

Nah man, I was kidding. I'm not super crazy about Smash myself.

Hoping to play with you all when it's out though. :)

Hmmm.... interesting.
I never thought about that
it could be huge actually.

At least in Travis' case, it would be a situation where Nintendo was putting in a character that had already appeared in two decent games for the console. Snake should've only appeared in a Smash game after appearing elsewhere on the console, so I agree that Nintendo was suckered by that ass. So there's a key difference to address the issue you bring-up. Nintendo should only put characters on after the third party lives-up to their end of the deal on support.

And yes.. ignoring the market leader. I'm well past the point of not really giving a damn about third parties being offended by Nintendo. I'm a rather bitter man towards them, and they can ************ for all I care (use your imagination). In fact, I went through that list of closed studios, googled most of them, and was astounded by the number of them that either outright ignored the more-sustainable-to-develop-for market leader or treated it like shit. This is where I censor myself and just grin.

Okay, another idea.

Someone pissed as hell, storming in a room, busting the door open, the others in the room trying to understand/calm him down.

^I feel you Tom. Still, big devs aside, why didn't we see anything like Limbo on Wii? I hate to use the term "art game", but where were they? Could Wii handle a game like that, in terms of physics/framerate?

But hey, this time Nintendo will surely be doomed! So they will stick with the UBER POWER of the 720 and ps4!

I also believe that people underestimate another thing the Wii did for Nintendo. Wii is a household name. A new Wii console will surely get mainstream media attention because of that...

If they manage to get the "casual AND coregamer console" message across, this thing could have massive success!

They have to show casual AND core gamer games at E3, because of mainstream media and press... Wether GAF likes it or not ;)

File size restrictions I'd imagine

I'm not a big fan of casual games, but if Wii Sports on Wii U has online multiplayer, I will be all over that.

I think it easily would've been a great retail product. But yeah.. this is one case where Nintendo's restrictions limited its online marketplace. I hope that they have learned a few things like this from their Wii experience; it was their first online console, so it's reasonable to think that they were keeping tabs on what needed improvement.

http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/26662-orbis-specs-get-detailed did anyone see this? I searched neogaf's forum and didn't see a thread about it, if this is true (and it sort of makes sense as to why they would use an AMD CPU) the Wii U will actually be comparable to PS4 and might actually be more powerful than it.

Part of me hopes that Sony shoots for the stars. But another part of me sees Nintendo benefitting from having another modestly-specc'd console on the market.

If Sony does go the modest route, look out for some big meltdowns. Yikes.

Nintendo wasn't "tricked" into putting Snake into the game. He got in because Kojima is friends with Sakurai and asked/ begged Sakurai to put him in (because his son wanted Snake as a character in smash or something apparently). Not because Nintendo thought they could get some MGS games out of it or something.

The reason Sakurai gave for not having MM or any other 3rd party outside of Snake and Sonic was because no 3rd party "asked to have their character be in brawl". He only picked Sonic because (shockingly) after Snake was revealed he was the number one character on the poll he took.

I think Travis will get in for the exact same reason Snake got in. Suda and Sakurai seem to be friends and Suda has stated that he wants Travis to be in Smash.

This is also part of the reason I don't see MM happening. Capcom doesn't seem to care about him anymore and wont even put him in the fighting games THEY make.

Holy FRACK, I'm taking a break from my awesome spring break to say say SOMEONE NEEDS TO MAKE A "PS4 ON PAR WITH CURRENT GEN CONSOLES" THREAD RIGHT THE HELL NOW.

I think the entire generation could become a lot brighter if the specs don't go that high, 1080p would fit fine in those specs, though I would hope both Sony and Nintendo opt for 2GB ram, we already know that Nintendo is over 1GB so that might force Sony's hand, though they don't have to deal with a subscreen... ATM. I hope this spec leak leads to something, could be a big reason why Sony and Microsoft don't want to talk about their systems yet, they just aren't going to wow people like everyone thinks, but will be a decent upgrade from previous hardware.

It's a smart move that would probably have a lot more to do with investors than the company's goals.

After having to deal with their $599 powerhouse getting absolutely murdered by 2 Gamecubes duct taped together for $250, I can't see Sony going down the PS3 route again next gen.

If Microsoft is the only powerhouse next gen... things would get real interesting.

As for Smash, they'd be missing out if they don't go down the DLC/NFC route. Smash really is the perfect game to take advantage of those things. Trophies, hello! Sell real life, scanable trophies to unlock said trophy in the game, along with music or something.

Nintendo has claimed they want to do DLC the honest way. With Smash, it could be truly awesome. Take Brawl for example. With DLC, we could have got a Mario Galaxy stage, a Skyward Sword Link alternate costume, Palutena as a playable character... this list goes on.

It's too bad people associate DLC with Capcom's method of dealing with it. DLC is a great thing in the right hands, and a downright evil thing in the wrong hands.

3rd partys just want to make the same game for all three and be done with it, God know what they do if they not more or less all the same box

I think Wii U may end up being the PS2 of this gen with nextbox and PS4 being GC or Xbox, other more powerful but with it being easy to make games on become leader console.

leader console most of the time win every gen so far or done a little better, and they always the cheaper one.

if the Wii U the right mix

Sony probably will, too. And the 1GB of memory mentioned as mentioned in the rumor is dedicated to the graphics unit.

Quite you! This a speculation thread, there's no room for facts.

That would be a good thing, as the system should hopefully have 2gb of memory, also I created a thread, not trying to troll, but it's 3 day old news and no one has a thread up, so I have to assume no one has seen it.

if the Wii U the right mix

I'm not quite sure that the rumored CPU could beat an IBM custom CPU, AMD (and I love them) have been behind the curve for a while, I think that it will be an interesting mix of hardware that will lead to quick development ports from PCs to PS4 and back, but I think it will make the PS4 a bit of an outcast this next gen, as Xbox3 and Wii U will have a much closer architecture.

But that would be so much more reasonable. lolreason.

*snicker*

Hey.. if Sony goes for another high-spec gambit and it doesn't work.. yikes.

A lot of their fans denigrate Nintendo fans as "profit worshippers" or the like, but if Sony goes the $599 Part Deux route and things go poorly for them? They'll be late to realize the merit of appreciating a company's sense of self-preservation.

But I'd bet that Sony now is building that sense, which means that many third-party excuses will become even more paper-thin and ridiculous.

So when both go balls to the walls with specs, more devs will die and Nintendo will just sustain themselves while making cash and not burning it, thanks to the "just" moderate upgrade from this gen (semi optimal solution)

When just one of them goes insane, WiiU may get the ports because the devs need the quick cash (optimal solution).

So no matter what happenes... Doom is far away. Quite a comfy spot for Nintendo to be in!

Amazing what a huge stable of sustaining IPs, sensible leadership, financially sound console design, and an army of rabid fanatics willing to give Nintendo their bank account numbers can do, eh?

sega gave the wii a ton of support. they brought over a lot of exclusives and timed exclusives.

lots of third parties who made wii games often made exclusive games. the wii only lacked the multiplatform games the other two platforms got, which would have been better 90% of the time on the other platforms.

I'm reading Sony's wikipedia page and I found something that let me spechless
Sorry that I'm dragging this into discussion but I'm really shocked

In September 2000 Sony had a net worth of $100 billion, but by December 2011 it had plunged to $18 billion.

At first I read it like they lost $18 billion but reading it again it says it plungled TO $18 billion
is that number accurate? Is it true? I mean... I can't even...and they're releasing a new console? Oh my!
it's like they're begging to ruin themselves

Just curious, how well did House of the Dead Overkill do on the PS3? I thought the Wii version did well enough from what I heard.

They lost 82% of what they were worth 12 years ago? DAMN!! What have they been doing all this time?

It's too bad people associate DLC with Capcom's method of dealing with it. DLC is a great thing in the right hands, and a downright evil thing in the wrong hands.

It's not just the way Capcom does it. Shitty DLC monetization schemes are the Standard Operating Procedure currently, as well as pretty grubby stuff like Day One DLC. You're never going to get a company to say no to what is essentially free money in exchange for whatever was excised previous to the game's release.

DLC is more like The One Ring. It's fucking shitty and evil, no matter if Gandalf or Frodo wears it. It will eventually return to Sauron.

Sony does a LOT more than make video games. And their video game branch makes the most money these days.

Why would it be closed? I can't even count the number of threads about rumours of the Wii U's power (mainly about how it isn't powerful as expected) and they weren't closed.

Yeah, I definitely don't think I'm trolling with that post, I searched the threads for a rumored leak from that article but didn't come up with anything, and I'm definitely not waving around a fanboy flag other than maybe my avatar. I think if that rumor is true, it would be a good thing for the entire industry, a chance to catch up, besides it isn't like the current consoles really look THAT dated, the biggest bottleneck in them is the ram.

They lost 82% of what they were worth 12 years ago? DAMN!! What have they been doing all this time?

In 2010 They were worth $34.92 billion
they burned over $16 billion in two years :O

I know they do more than videogames
what I am saying overall is that they need a new business model ASAP and going cutting edge (if rumors are true) again is not helping their situation at all

Well-stated. I adore Nintendo and trust them implicitly when it comes to game design.. but the temptation for them to milk their franchises with DLC is going to be gigantic, no matter how "nice" the company may be.

DLC is yet another reason that I really don't mind Nintendo being behind the times with its online presence.

Wow! Plunging to 18 billion? That's insane if true.

the ps3 version sold extremely poorly in the us. like, worse than little king's story or shadows of the damned.

i wouldn't say the wii version did great, but i'm used to most lower-budget games doing over 200k being games that did well enough.
