There are, but ironically an Intel HD 3000 will run all of those anyway (not well, you'll have to play them at low settings/resolutions, but if what's important to you is being able to play them, there's not really a laptop you can buy other than a netbook that won't run those).

I doubt Xotic ships internationally, but it will give you an idea of what kind of laptop to look for and the price you're looking at.
http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-u36sgxs71-p-3558.html

Wow, nice. The HD3000 will run them but all at min settings and I wasn't sure about MP3 running at all.

As that's an Asus I assume it should be available here somewhere.

The HD3000 is a robust graphics card. It's not a good graphics card, but I can run TERA, D3, GW2, and SC2 on my laptop with no problems at low settings. (I have an ultrabook 1.9ghz processor-2.9ghz overclocked).

Oftentimes what the HD3000 does when it cannot run something is it defers to software rendering (this is EXTREMELY slow, but it does work), which is heavily processor intensive. Having a good processor will thus help with any low-end graphics card, because most of the "Optimus" technologies do this as well (any graphics card that's going to defer to the processor is going to benefit from having a good processor, really).

You might as well forget about the HD 3000, because Ivy Bridge's HD 4000 is 30-40% faster in almost every game tested, with preliminary drivers.

Both lag behind AMD's integrated Llano, but in turn AMD's mobile CPUs are outpaced by even Intel's i3 dual cores.

Thank you, K.Jack! Picked up two of these. I'll be back in a few months when I'm ready to buy something for myself. :-)

Well shoot, I had avoided that one because it seemed so far above your given budget. Oops.

Your kids will be thrilled.

I still game on mine :)

I need to get a new laptop asap, 4 years is too much... hopefully IB+K/GCN is around the corner!

You are a stronger being than I. If you can hold out until late-April/early-May, your hopes will be fulfilled.

Yup, NDA is up, and Asus has dated its G55 and G75 for April 29th.

Equipped with Ivy Bridge, GTX 660M, Thunderbolt, and 4 USB 3.0 ports.

Has there been any hands-on with those machines yet? I'm hoping the m11x finally gets refreshed...seems overdue

The Alienware Facebook page is hyping up their coming appearance in Boston at PAX East 2012, which runs from April 6 to 8.

That said, the Dell insider rumor mill has only been talking about a new M14x, M17x and M18x. But who knows? It is long overdue.

Plus the new 11.6" Clevo with 35W Ivy Bridge quad core and GT 650M will be coming stateside, so Dell had better be paying attention.

Do you have a link to that? BTW, what's the difference between the g55 and g75 apart from screen size?

I managed to find this at a forum, but nothing concrete:

Expected release: 4/29/12

G55VW-DS71 SRP: $1349.00

Alright K.Jack. Now that the new graphics cards are out, do you recommend I go ahead and buy this bad boy: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005WPUN32/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Or wait for the new ones? From what I've read the new mid range NVidia 600 series are just rebranded 500s?
So...I can just go ahead and get this one right? Cause I'm tired of waiting.
Honestly the only reason to wait is if you just must have the next-gen kit. The problem is that you will have to wait until sometime in May, because the a-holes at Intel keep pushes the Ivy Bridge release date back, holding the notebook industry hostage.

The MSI is a strong machine. I have no problem recommending it.

But have you ever seen the unbranded version. Same machine, just minus the gimmick buttons, which add little to nothing under real world testing.

Follow me -> Add the 2630QM -> GTX 580M -> Windows 7

Total = $1557.00

So for $100 more than the branded GT780 you'd gain the GTX 580M, which smokes the 570M by at least 30% in everything.

JI'd also recommend spending the $35 for the matte screen with increased color gamut. Brighter, better viewing angles, vibrant colors, etc...

Just something to consider. The only upcoming cards which will beat the 580M are the 7970M and 680M, but the latter is rumored for the August time frame.

The person who provided that on the NBR forum works for a retailer. It's legit, but Asus hasn't made any official announcements.

Preorders will likely begin in mid-April.

The other difference is that the G75 holds two HDDs or an SSD/HDD combo.

Hey all, the Intel embargo release date is April 8th, so expect an absolute deluge of announcements when that NDA is lifted.

This is what has been keeping everything so quiet for the last couple of months.

Hype.

You are a stronger being than I. If you can hold out until late-April/early-May, your hopes will be fulfilled.
I have held on this long, might as well wait another month
just hope the 8600m GT doesn't set itself on fire, as it has been threatening for the last year, until then.

I would not get that MSI. it's got great spec but the built quality is shit to put it nicely. I RMA mine 3 times back to NewEGG and the last one was still broken. I read around on the net and everyone said MSI customer service is shit they will send your notebook back saying it's fix when it's not. Some said the laptop they got back is worst than before they send it. I contact their customer service once and was left with the worst impression. The guy who took my call told me to use Google and download a software to fix my computer. WTF?

Anyway, the problem I have with mine was bad memory stick (I ran memtest and it fail instantly) so I just replaced the ram and the computer myself instead of risking sending it MSI (which you have to prepaid all shipping and insurance) the computer has been running like champ since (I also did complete reinstalling of Windows and all the drivers apparently the version they put on the computer was missing bunch of files thus prevent it from getting update).

I would go with what k.jack recommended and get unbranded custom built one. Gentech seems to be really good also from reading on laptop forum.

Is there such a thing as a laptop that plays games well and is around 6lbs? I wouldn't be picking one up for another few months, but I would like an idea for what to look at. I think I remember reading something saying the Ivy-bridge would be my best bet for this and they come out later this year. Should I look into laptops with ivy-bridge?

Wait for 2nd iteration of Razer Blade.

Yes there are a lot of 6lbs or less machines which can game decently, even more in a few weeks.

Mid-range gaming strength will be available around 4lbs, with the GT 640M.

Wait for 2nd iteration of Razer Blade.

Oh man for a second I thought you were serious.

I am looking for a new laptop this Spring, criteria thus:

• Available in the UK
• 13"
• Option for SSD
• Pref no optical ( not a deal breaker)
• Capable of D3, GW2 and maybe stuff like Max Payne 3 at low details.

Essentially an ultra book but with something a bit better than an Intel HD3000 in it. Anything like that around?

I would get a Sony. Check sonystyle.co.uk

Sony Vaio SB and SA series. You can easily remove optical drive and place a second hard drive. Run SSD as main and then HDD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmFcQ1Lw5tQ&feature=channel

I am completely oblivious to laptop video cards, what should I be looking for in a laptop. I would want it to last at least a few years playing games at medium if possible.

I wonder if Ivy Bridge will be worth the wait. I heard something about benchmarks saying it will run really warm. But I wonder if that applies to laptop variants too.
I wonder if the graphics of 4000 HD will be impressive.

I want M12x or M13x.

M14x is just the size of regular 15'' . I want a fat MBP13 sized gaming monster. With edge to edge display. If M11x didn't have such a wack bezel they could easily fill it up with 1-2 inches of more screen with no size increase.

Still no word of LG P330 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-GWwczVC_w&feature=relmfu ) in european territory. It's a 13'' but with a freakin Geforce 555! THAT'S INSANE! Also no backlit keyboard. fuuuuuuu

Medium for years - Not such a thing. Laptops age crazy fast. And those with good graphics cards that will run games at high, will run some games at medium in a year to two years from now. But who really knows? Often a game comes out that will just have stupid requirements.

My suggestion: buy it with something specific in mind now, or wait for what you need. If your goal is to play GTA 5 on it, dont buy something now and pray it will run well on that. seen lots of people who got butt hurt when it didnt run well on their machines.

here is a list that might help you: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.130.0.html

What's good with the high end? I'm still in the strange situation of not having a laptop and can still muster a wait if the HD7970/90 or GTX680 are excellent competitors. Any news on them and what laptops they should find themselves in?

The asus g55 and g75 later this month hopefully...rumor says April 29 release?

Edit: sorry thought you said 660m. I think 680 is not till late summer.

For the weight class you have expressed interest in, the upcoming cards to look out for are the GT 640M and the AMD 7750M.

I'm sure the GT 640M will find its way into a few 13" and 14" machines.

Now that we have the GT 650M, which is as fast as the GTX 560M, in an 11" laptop, the LG doesn't register as impressive anymore.

Medium for years - Not such a thing. Laptops age crazy fast.
I disagree very strongly with you.

The high-end mobile GPUs of three years ago, such as the GTX 260M, are still running today's games on medium or better, at 720p.

The Mobility 5870 was 2 years old in January, and still games on High at 1080p.

The GTX 560M has been running games on High at 1080p for one month shy of a year, and won't be forced down to medium settings in this calendar year.

And my 6970M is nearly twice that speed, along with the 6990M, GTX 485M, and 580M.

The only cards which age quickly are the ones which were low-end from day one, meaning the 128-bit DDR3 cards. It all comes down to what desktop card the mobile one came from, when determining how quickly the GPU will deteriorate.

For clarity, the cards I've mentioned:

260M = 9800 GT
5870M = 5770
6970M = 6850
6990M = 6870
GTX 485M = GTX 460 (unlocked to 384 shaders)
GTX 560M = GTX 550 Ti
GTX 570M = GTX 560 (but on 192-bit)
GTX 580M = GTX 560 Ti

tl;dr - Mobile cards which come from good stock will last for a long time, as long as the cards they come from at least.

What's good with the high end? I'm still in the strange situation of not having a laptop and can still muster a wait if the HD7970/90 or GTX680 are excellent competitors. Any news on them and what laptops they should find themselves in?
7970M is rumored for May. GTX 680M is June/July, for right now.

The waiting game is a tough one to play, with all of these architectural changes. Delay, delay, delay has been the current M.O.

But we know the 7970M is either a desktop 7850 or 7870; the GTX 680M is not as clear, but it almost has to be a GK104 variant.

If I'm looking for a 15-inch gaming laptop, my best bet is to wait for the new G55 with the Ivy bridge? Any idea how much the updated G55 will be? I'm in no rush to buy anything atm. I can wait. Besides Asus' G55 any other upcoming 15-inch gaming laptops to take a look at?

I'm in the same situation as you. I recently picked up a g74 from best buy but returned it. I should have done my homework. I wasnt aware the best buy model was somewhat dumbed down with less gpu memory and no bluetooth :/ that was my first and last time buying a pc from bestbuy. Personally I will be waiting for the g55. It is supposed to release this month....well that is what all websites are claiming. I hope we get more info from PAX this weekend about the g55/g75 as Asus will be there. Check my post a few posts back it says the g55 will be $1350...of course who knows how accurate that is.

All aboard the G55 train. What is PAX?

I plan to save up $800-$1000 for a laptop what should be the best option for that budget? I'm thinking playing Witcher 2, Phantasy Star online 2, Diablo and anything that appears recently.

At $800, you'll be looking for a combo of i5 + GT 640M, and at $1k you'll want to spend another $100 or so for the i7 + GTX 660M.

You seem to know a lot about this stuff. Any ideas when preorders for g55/g75 will start by chance? I mean at sites like amazon, newegg etc.

I really don't know. The Intel embargo ends at 12:00 a.m. of April 8th, so I'd expect notebook announcements to begin next week.

The funny/sad thing about this weekend is, all of these notebooks will be on display at PAX on the 6th, but Intel's embargo ending after PAX on the 8th will prevent the companies from revealing the full details of what they're showing off.

So I'm looking forward to Monday more than PAX.
Oh, don't mind us. We're just being decently cheap gaming laptops. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-1&isNodeId=1&Description=lenovo+y570&x=0&y=0

Oh I'm not minding them, because the Y570 is a too unreliable for me to recommend here anymore.

That is kind of silly. Oh well. Hoping preorders open next week. Honestly still not sure if i want the g55 or g75. How much of a performance boost over the 560m is the 660m?

Read the user reviews. It gets much worse than the screen resolution.

Most say the screen is crap and the build quality is lacking also which is odd considering its lenovo which usually make pretty rugged notebooks or at least they did. I havent purchased a thinkpad since it was still ibm making them so i dunno. But, I purchased a 15.6" laptop a while ago with that resolution on the cheap and will never do it again. The res is fine on my netbook but on anything 15" and up it is terrible IMO. Fonts and such start looking blurry and jaggy.

I see a banner for the NP8151 on sager's site that says it's getting a GTX580 if you go hit "customize it," but you can still only choose the 560. Is that the graphics card bump? sorry, I know nothing about the new hardware news cycle or nvidia's card naming system.
