The Formula 1 2012 Season |OT| The Year of the...uh...Platypus?

They did a big-boy three-stopper for Koba, but couldn't pass any of the cars in that hefty Raiko-procession.

Huh, well then...They did leave Perez out for too long at least, right?
I need to salvage something from this
Maybe I'm not as observant as I thought.

Anyway, do you guys expect Mercedes to be as competitive in the next races? I'm still shocked at how well the car treated its tires, was that because of the lower track temp compared to the previous races? Maybe Bahrain will be worse for them? I'm just thinking out loud, it's just unbelievable that they went from hardest on the tires to being able to stay out forever.

Yeah, was a bit confused by Vettel's post-race interview when he said his 2-stopper cost him at the end. I doubt a 3-stopper would have got him into the Top 5.
It cost him a chance to fend of Webber at the end. Probably didn't actually consider that he wouldn't have been there otherwise.

Kid's noticeably starting to lose his ability to handle himself when conditions aren't ideal. It will definitely be a good experience for him and he'll come out a far better driver for it. Hell, even Webs went through more than his fair share of shit at Williams and Jaguar (and RBR until recently).

I can't generally like Vettel in interviews and on Top Gear etc, but i can't remember him ever sayng it's his fault for anything. I thought two stopping was the better strategy today when that's what most of the top finishers did. The McLarens were unlucky with traffic, it seems that was always going to happen.

Who's your likely candidate for WDC 2012?

It's gotta be Hamilton and Button at the moment going from the first three races, I still refuse to discount Red Bull though until the end of the year. Mercedes still looks good too, we'll see how they deal with the higher temperatures in Bahrain.

Unless RBR can pull some magic tricks with the car, I'd have to go Button or Hamilton as well. If Webber can get a podium next week, then I'd almost have to put him up there as well, we'll see. Also have to wait and see what happens to the Mercs on other tracks as well now that they've found their rhythm.

I think we're a long way from being able to predict who might win with any hope of accuracy. Especially given almost everyone else has had a far bigger departure from last year's car than McLaren have (so we might see even bigger changes with them going forward).

Whilst we're having (arguably) five teams fighting for podiums it's going to be difficult to predict anything. Though obviously right now McLaren have the edge.

With a calmer head, time to give credit to some drivers:

- Rosberg - It goes without saying. Excellent driver
- Schumi - Was doing very well. What a shame
- Macca boys, and especially Button. If he beats Hamilton next race, can we say he's clearly the superior driver in Macca?
- Webber!! - Chinboy is on fire, last lap overtake was more of a statement than more points. Good job

Overall the race was phenomenal, the last few laps I was going through the champagne menu just in case Kimi is on the podium. Settled with a double shots of whiskey to calm me down

I'm really happy Kimi is back, I didn't get this emotional about a race for some time now. He really makes F1 much more enjoyable to watch (for me)

You're certainly not alone

Just caught the end of the race before I had to go to work, great finish. Button was classy in defeat, well done Britney on the race win, well deserved. Bahrain only a week away, not sure I agree with them going, but I do like the idea of another race soon.

What?

Hamilton has out-qualifying Button in all 3 races this season & has more points than him?
You cant say one is clearly better than the other

Good too see Vettel being forced to scrap for points this season. I don't think he realised how fortunate he was to have such a dominant car last season.

Hamilton's temperament seems to be much better this year. He has the talent to win races, and there are many drivers on the grid at the moment with the talent, but the winner will be a combination of talent, temperament and car. Id say Hamilton has all three (the only question is his temperament) with Button close behind.

Would be great to see Rosberg move on from here and start getting a few more wins. Very happy for him.

Insane moment.

Really good race towards the end, definitely had a good pay-off. The first two thirds were fairly dull, though, with DRS not really working.

Good on Nico, he deserves that. A shame Button got fucked by his pit crew though because I think he would have had him.

I was really impressed with Vettel too. Made the most of a bad situation and his tyres so nearly lasted him. Great drive.

You can't predict anything this season.

BBC coverage was absolutely superb, as always. They've got all the connections with the drivers and teams, but more than that, they've got heart.

It's not about qualifying only. I do believe that Hamilton is faster, and I'm one of the biggest doubters of Button (still am), but somehow he always seem to be doing a better job at the end, in a very quiet and unnoticed way.. very sleek that Button

You're certainly not alone

Wonder how long it will be before the friction starts to appear between Button & Hamilton, Hamilton clearly has a massive lead in qualifying and so will feel like he's the faster driver, but Button will feel like he's beaten Lewis on track enough times to consider himself the more likely champion.

You know for a fact that Whitmarsh isn't going to back either one until he absolutely has to.

Has all the makings of another Senna v Prost.

I don't think McLaren will favor any driver. I'm just thinking that Button is more stable and would be a better WDC candidate. It's not who gets the most points, its who loses the less

It's okay, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Come on Frenchy!

we'll see

Only now watching the sky coverage and Vettel still sounded annoyed 'We had not straight line speed whatsoever ...cars were passing me...absolutely ridiculous'... he's so hilarious when he's pissed.

He's right though. In what was otherwise one of the less effective DRS zones the RB was a sitting duck.
There is a great analysis of this on F1technical.net but this has always been flaws in the RB7/RB8 but because the RB7 was on pole all last year this flaw was very rarely exposed.

Now that the RB8 is averaging 3rd row in Q3, this top speed issue is causing 2 problems; lacking the top speed to overtake cars in DRS zones and therefore being under threat from other cars following in DRS zones.

Im not trying to Bash Button or say that Hamilton is a better driver.
But Hamilton has qualified 1st, 1st & 2nd and finished 3rd three times in a row during the race.

Button has qualified 2nd, 2nd & 6th and finished 1st, 14th & 2nd during the race.

How can you come to the conclusion that Button is doing a better job or more stable? Its completely the opposite so far this season.

Im not saying it will stay like that, but at the moment there is nothing between them - so im not sure how you came to any conclusion :P

EJ was pushing those idiot fans around like a pro on the Forum. Bouncer in a former life?

Ahahaha and now DC is getting flooded.

Those fans are... enthusiastic.

Edit: Ahahaha, okay, the guy who said Sky Sports F1 sucks is a legend. Crowd redeemed.

Excellent race. Great start, strong teams in the mid pack this year.

Then after about the half point, it got turned up to 11! Massa train, Kimi train, Sauber passing each other, RBR fighting, pit stop drama, excellent finish, and Rosberg with a satisfying and well deserved win and grin through the whole thing.

This was one of the best races in a while from a fan's point of view. Multiple position fights, close racing and no stupid accidents.

Sounds like I need to find the BBC forum this time.

Your comments seem disconnected from the current results, as Adamm said if anyone on the whole grid has been stable in these first 3 races it has been Hamilton. Button himself admitted Malaysia was awful while Hamilton was chilling out in 3rd place again.
I think McLaren are favourites right now but there is nothing between the drivers. Hamilton is clearly in a good place mentally right now though.

How is he wrong? Good race by vettel.

Redbull needs HP. I think the handling is fine.

Hamilton seemed unusually sensible with his overtaking today. Not so much hesistant, rather he was lining up for attacks, but didn't follow through if they weren't safe.

It seems like tyre temperatures/pressure is masking the current performance order. It should be more clear in a few races. I still expect the season to be pretty tight and super exciting.

Very good race, especially the last 20 laps. Happy for Rosberg, but disappointed that Schumacher had the pit problem.

Going to be a great season.

.

His do or die attitude to overtakes has definitely subsided over the past couple of years, during his first year you would often think 'how the hell did he find room there?'

Of course a year of being hit by a floundering incompetent massa probably helps focus the mind a little.

What an amazing race, was on the edge of my seat the entire length. Sad about Kobayashi at the start, but he pulled that move on Perez at the end which was fantastic to see.

Congrats to Nico obviously, extremely happy for him and Mercedes. Also happy for Grosjean to finish strongly, with that said sorry about Kimi. That Battle from 2-10 for the last 15-20 laps was just stunning and gut-wrenching.

Really the true disappointment is not seeing Schumacher in that battle. And those passes on Vettel at the end, especially Webber was just fantastic.

Up 29 places from this race, finally the changes paid off.

I must say, this has to be the season for newcomers to watch. Just wonderful races so far, hope it stays this way.

So, yeah. I had Maldonado as my 1st driver and thought after FP3 that the Williams was going to be awful this weekend, so I went with Ricciardo.

Well, fuck me.

Hamilton's faster, but is inconsistent. He's obviously proving more consistent this year, but only vs himself last year... not against Button. Once he is basically a lock for a no-mistake race, he'll be better than Button IMO.

Yeah, forum was amazing. Is it always that good?

I had Mal Kov Wil Wil and traded off that to something else :| The fantasy stuff stuff has been terrible for me this year.
