Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

so this card is good? im not to big on the whole tech aspects on the PC side but im hoping some of its tech get used on a consule one day.

Just got off the phone with newegg and the rep has a ticket in for me for the shipping cost. It seems that shipping price is an error and it will be adjusted. I'll hear back a bit later on it.

Hmm, actually have a question for any 680 owners - Does the card still stay in active mode when you have more than one monitor hooked up to it, like the 580?

Cross posting this from the 7900 thread ..

Breaking News: AMD HD 7970 Price Drop Incoming

After weeks of dealing with a retail price that put their HD 7970 in a no-win position against the GTX 680, it looks like AMD will finally cut their flagship card’s price.

Last month, we reported that AMD was sticking to their guns by retaining the HD 7970′s SRP at $549 regardless of NVIDIA’s higher performing and lower priced GTX 680. The reasoning behind this seemed to be quite simple: capitalize upon high end sales since NVIDIA’s production was struggling to keep up with demand.

At the time, we surmised that the only thing which would effectively push AMD to lower prices would be either improved GTX 680 availability or the possible release of lower priced Kepler derivatives. It looks like AMD’s bean counters may know something we don’t. If our moles are correct, the HD 7970 and possibly other cards in the HD 7000-series lineup are about to get a price cut.

The whispers we have heard from a number of sources peg the HD 7970′s new price at some point between $470 and $490 within the next few days. In our books, this would put AMD’s Tahiti XT in a favorable position against the GTX 680, particularly when the board partners’ numerous overclocked and custom cooled versions are taken into account.

What this means for the rest of AMD’s cards is anyone’s guess but as we previously discussed, cutting the price on one could very well have a cascade effect upon their whole product stack.

Naturally, as we receive more information it will be posted so stay tuned. It looks like the GPU Wars are just beginning to heat up!
:)

It could either mean one of two things or both
1. 680 availability in the channel is increasing
2. 7970+ model incoming

Before anyone starts hating on what a waste of money they are...I did get 3 of the 4 free from EVGA because I registered my cards as one of the first 2,000 in the world.

Is there any reason I shouldn't take a dremel to the stock backplate and just cut out a huge hole where the "vent" is (aside from dropping the resale value a bit)?

I read that and was preparing to come visit you...

Then I realized you weren't talking about the gpus :p

wonder if it was worth buying a 570 superlocked or just wait and pay the extra. but then again i still need to get a new powersupply if i was to get one of these. hmm.

Is it really worth $30 more for evga's superclocked version? Anyone seen any real world performance comparisons? what about the $40 extra for superclocked+?

Cannot afford a gtx680 (would be a bit silly in my two year old system) but I've treated myself with an upgrade from my 9600GT to a 550GTXTi

can't wait to see the difference

Nope. Just OC yourself.

Check the warranty differences, but I think eVGA lumped them all together now so that doesn't matter. SC used to have better warranties.

Hazaro, why are you waiting for the GTX 660/670? Because its cheaper to SLI and performance isn't that big of a difference? I have everything but the video card for new PC and i am tempted to wait after hearing your logic behind not getting a 680.

I'm not rich and I don't have the need for 680 performance. I'm fine playing on Medium or High with ok AA levels to get 60FPS.
Value is important to me as well, so if I see a 670Ti with 85% performance and 70% cost, then that's a winner for me.

I think it is that slaughterhouse of a thread where half of PC GAF got banned:

Ah. So that's where it was all happening. Should have known. I saw that thread title and immediately thought no good can ever come from it. Stayed away.

Going to Fry's to pick one of these up right now, even though I don't even know whats coming out this year that will push it besides Metro.

Why would anyone give you shit about it??? I have used these on several evga cards in the past and I definately have seen a 2-3c drop in temps on average on my past cards and with the 680 I also saw a drop in temps. 2-3c may not sound like much, but it is better than running +2-3c...

Metro's been delayed to 2013. And it's THQ. So who knows what kind of hell it's going to enter when they go bankrupt.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going to push these cards. And not to be a nitwit, but Metro 2033 runs better on AMD hardware.. wonder if the new game will be the same.

I'm impatient and about to do something stupid. They have the ASUS 680 in stock at a store near my house. It's $549. I've been waiting for a non-reference MSI or ASUS card all this time. How stupid would it be if I picked up the ASUS and then sold it when the non reference cards are readily available?

Went back through the last couple of pages to see if this was posted.

1) Holy crap at the ban thread. Knew that thread was dangertown when I first opened it.

2) What I came to post was this - EVGA SC Signature+ with backplate. This cooler was pictured on the 4GB version awhile back, but it looks like they're putting it on something else sooner. Only difference with this one that I can see is that it is 6+2 Pin and a 6 pin, rather than dual 6 pin. Supposedly can take more volts. Most importantly though, is that it is freaking gorgeous. Auto-notify enabled.

Yes I do realize that being enticed by card with a more fashionable design, different color scheme, and backplate is the tech equivalent of 'Dress Me Up Barbie'. I'm okay with that.

Fixed parts are bolded.

That does look amazing and about time too. I really want a hydrocopper 2 or a different look for the classified hydrocopper. That white black would be perfect for the inside of the Switch 810.
so sketch you have to rebuy all your 680s now

Damnit. That EVGA card is nice. Really am going to stay strong and wait for the beefier Keplers to make an appearance though, my 7970 is fine for now!

Is the jump from a 480 to a 680 going to be worth it? The only thing I hate about my 480 is that it's loud as shit.

Noise will be alot better...Performance will be alot better....power draw will be alot less...heat will be alot better...really no negatives.

I told a few peeps last month that the 690 may actually beat the 7990 to release.

Too bad you still cant get a 680 readily a actual month later, and where is the rest of Nvidia's lineup? I'd like something to push down 7870/7850 prices already, or maybe give me a better option.

Probably will be the 690. But I'm also kind of hoping inside that it's the GK110, what the 680 was supposed to be. However I don't think we're going to see that kind of card until the next generation. :S

Wouldn't it more likely be the 670X etc? Why are we assuming 690 so soon?

As I recall, "late April, May" was the rumor for the salvage GK104's.
