Retro aren't an enormous team, 2 1/2 years is definitely not extreme for an 'extremely visually impressive' title on a new HD platform.
There could be a crunch period to get the game ready for a playable E3 demo.

if there is a playable demo at E3 it seems weird to wait a whole year or more to release it though. Just doesn't add up.

I could see it being saved for maybe jan/feb or whatever the launch window is but june-september is cuuurrazy. I hope that's not the case.

I actually agree. I mean... I doubt all of their coders, modelers, VFX guys only toyed around with 1998 era tech in their spare times. They'll know what to do with it.

Where do you stream these things? You said you were doing one last Friday and I missed it.

lol I was talking about the investors meeting.

I stream at complete random. Not sure if I'll do it again, though. Some people said the video was perfect, for others it was unwatchable. I must have Fisher Price Internet.

Do we all agree that The Retro game is likely a launch game? Or at the latest launch window? That's the only thing stopping me from believing that it is an FPS. Why go up against Call of Duty.

I still say it's an action game of some sort.

I don't really expect it to come out this year, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it did. I don't think Nintendo would be too influenced by a release like COD, even if it does go for a similar demographic. Especially if it's a new IP, since it would probably do better at launch in that case.

Inspired by your list, I attempted to rewatch Nintendo's 2006 E3 conference so I could make sure I was remembering the announced first party titles correctly. I say attempted because I stopped watching as soon as Nintendo started showing Red Steel. Fuck that.

Nintendo showed, in order:
Wii Music
Wii Sports
Excite Truck
Super Mario Galaxy
The airplane minigame that later showed up in Wii Sports Resort
Metroid Prime 3
Wii Play
WarioWare
Twilight Princess
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Fire Emblem
Project Hammer
Brawl (Was not present at the conference, but shown the next day)

So 12-ish games. As a side note, Raving Rabbids was initially shown as Rayman 4. Hahahahaha. :(

Additionally, Google tells me that Nintendo showed 12 first party games during E3 2010 for the 3DS.

Clearly this doesn't mean that Nintendo will show 12 first party games for the Wii U, but it doesn't seem totally crazy to expect that many games.

Yeah there will definitely be a good bunch of games, and we only know of 3 so far (those being Mario, Pikmin 3, and Lego City Stories). Nintendo always shows as many games as they can muster for a presentation when new hardware is revealed, and I personally think they'll go all out this year (panic mode etc. etc.). This also makes me somewhat optimistic of see the next 3D Mario or even SSB4 there, as Nintendo will want to show anything they can to generate as much hype as possible.

Anyone notice that the full moon for June is going to be on the 4th? Pretty neat, eh?

Yup, I'd call that a full moon.

Awesome boxart concept, Aguila. I would love it if metroid took some more cues from the original alien.

Thanks! I totally agree. It'd be easy to apply some of the movie's concepts to Metroid games considering how similar and related they are. Some of the Prime games had a very Alien-like atmosphere at times and if Metroid Wii U uses the tablet as a visor, I could see even more opportunities for scary Alien-like situations.

There was a 2 year and 9 month gap between Metroid Prime 2 and 3. Donkey Kong Country Returns was in development for over 2 1/2 years.
Honestly, I think expecting Retro's game to be there at launch or even launch window is foolish. They haven't expanded that much.

I think we'll see some cool announcements for Nintendo Direct. As other people have said, making announcements now will make it easier to talk about losses at investors conference.

Fine.

I don't have the energy to argue. I used it all making stupid jokes in the Nintendo Direct thread.

Yes.

Sequel to this:
dudebro1-secretbonuspoint.gif

And will have unnecessary amounts of tessellation.

Well that just sounds erotic.

And kind of painful depending on the lubrication.

Hmm.. why am I turned-on by this?

Definitely the inner dudebro in both of you being aroused.

There's a bunch of episodes on Netflix streaming. If you choose any, you MUST watch the Final Sacrifice, your sides will be splitting. Terrible cult movie made in Canada in 1990, all I'm ginna say.

Thanks. If/when I get Netflix I'll check it out.

This is going to sound a bit weird, but here goes..

Nintendo's about to announce a rather large loss for the past fiscal year. They've been very open about expecting this kind of loss, so it won't come as any sort of surprise, but still.. I kinda hope that media outlets - both gaming and financial - put big pressure on them after this report is released to ths point where investors are leaning on Nintendo to go all-out.

I want to see Nintendo acting like the company's livelihood is at stake. I want them to throw everything they've got at us.

This is why I've been happy about the media bashing Nintendo and negative rumors.

I was hoping it would put pressure on Nintendo to reveal some news lol. Get them to reveal something they didn't want to reveal early.

Seeing many financial advisors trash the Wii U hasn't been good for Ninendo too.

I'd say launch window for the Retro game.

Going up against COD would be dumb.

Then again, Nintendo does do some dumb shit from time to time.

E3 Prediction Time
Retro’s game is a shooter with a heavy online focus and is set in the world of marines fighting in the middle east in the near future.

Star Wars Lightsaber game.

Yeah.. me and every other hardcore Wii owner probably still feels ripped-off that no one {*cough*}stepped-up to make a decent Lightsaber game. That's gotta be among my top disappointments for this generation. I mean, what a friggin' no-brainer.. ugh..

With dual-analog back as the default next gen :( it's not going to happen. Fuck dual-analog.

I'm fairly certain Nintendo is intent on keeping the Wii U under wraps until E3. If they crack now, then the very foundation of this thread would be eroded! Once they slip a detail, that's one less thing to speculate--pretty soon, we'll stop keeping tabs on the IBM investor meetings and there goes the neighborhood.

My guess:

- Pokemon B&W2 are nearly out. There's no way they won't mention them.
- Perhaps an update on Monster Hunter 4? It's been a while, and that's arguably their third-party ace in the hole. I don't think the game will be out this year, but another concept trailer would be nice.
- Nintendo doesn't really announce portable Zelda games at big conferences. Perhaps here?
- Bravely Default will probably get another mention.
- Fire Emblem DLC. (yawn)
- Level 5's upcoming stuff. Guild 01/Time Travelers.
- Seaman 3DS is still a thing.

It really shows how what a poor relationship Lucasfilm had with Nintendo this gen. Or I'm wrong and they were just mindnumbingly clueless.

I also still can't believe we never got a Wiimote powered Duck Hunt sequel. It would've been an amazing party game and sold gangbusters.

E3 Prediction Time
I predict that I will gain at least 5 pounds over E3 Week from enjoying the mountain of junk foods that I'll have stocked-up in the pantry and fridge. :)

E3 Prediction Time
A Star Wars lightsaber game finally comes to the Wii! Inspired by the popular minigame in the best selling Kinect Star Wars Game, Ubisoft and LucasArts have teamed up to bring you Star Wars Just Dance: Saber Grooves edition!

I'll take epic platforming, amazing level design, moody yet simplistic surrealistic visuals, great tunes and a tie-wearing ape any day over...another damn online shooter with gritty "matureish" visuals on the pile. What are we really hoping for in Retro? I certainly don't want to see them turn into Nintendo "western audience mainstream online shooter" cash cow.

So yeah, I'll take another great platformer over another dull shooter, as pretty/atmospheric as it may be. Let's get serious, Retro ain't gonna revolutionize the FPS core mechanics we all know and have been recycled since the mid-late 90's. But they could sure as hell revolutionize a deep competitive online platformer experience, maybe even flawless online netcode for co-op and races.

The sad thing is, I honestly don't know which way to conclude. Immediately upon the Wiimote's unveiling, everyone and their dog knew that a lightsabre game simply had to be made. And yet.. it didn't happen.

Surely Lucasfilm knew, right?

So I wonder.. what did Nintendo do that turned them off from this possibility? If it's some ReggieFarts-level bullshit.. ugh..

LucasArts invested heavily in HD development. I recall them making a big deal about the engine and physics they had and releasing tech demos.

Stuff like this was available for like 10-20 bucks everywhere.
This isn't rocket science - it was a license to print money.

It still didn't really happen.

The weird part is most of that heavy engine/physics stuff wasn't and isn't very apt for 360/PS3 hardware, they'd really need more powerful HW to really make those arbitrary features shine. Wii U would be the best bet.

But go look to LucasArts for consistency, throwing all that time, money and energy into a crap Kinect game. Sad thing is it'll probably sell well. But if there's any logic left in this land we'll at least see a amped up edition of Force Unleashed 3 on Wii U. Although a lightsaber game could be cool if it used the Wiimote, I guess.

E3 Prediction

The wii u will impress with its first party line up and one or two surprising 3rd party announcements.

The online set up will be discussed/demoed but many important questions will be left unanswered.

There will be lingering confusion about the upad, streaming capabilities or limitations, novel uses, etc.

At best one surprise for the 3ds (a game we don't know exists yet) or else its just gonna be
the new 2d mario, animal crossing, and some other already announced games.

Overall I will be happy with the 3ds stuff but unimpressed/disappointed by the wii u stuff.

So the Wii's final name was revealed on April 27, 2006. Maybe we'll get the bomb dropped at the investors meeting? That would be insane.
I've been saying for a while now that if they're going to change the name, the investor's meeting would be the time to do it. They need to get the word out early enough for third parties to prepare their marketing materials for E3.

Well yeah, but this generation's LucasArts don't exactly seem like the sharpest tools in the shed.
