9 targets hit (8 of which smaller than a headshot) in 1.8 seconds. There's a little aim assist when shooting chests but that sort of speed and accuracy is impossible to reproduce with dual analog sticks. Obviously this is an extreme example, there's no way in hell that I'd personally be able to replicate that but it does demonstrate how much better suited to FPS and TPS games pointer controls are. Those of you that have played Resident Evil Wii Edition and Resident Evil 5 with Move will know how much easier pointer controls make a game.

The first thing I notice when playing FPS games in particular on my PS3 and 360 is aim assist because it simply isn't needed when playing any FPS game on the Wii released from 2008 onwards.

If developers don't implement pointer controls using the remote and nunchuck for U FPS games I'm going to be very disappointed.

Well when a game's mechanics are essentially the same as clicking X on pop ups, of course it's faster. Not that I am a FPS fan or anything, but it always cracks me up about this war of controller vs. mouse. Just because one is faster doesn't mean everyone enjoys playing a game like that more.
 
Don't forget rail shooters. Had a friend play S&P:SS with both the CCPro and Gamecube controller and he was slaughtered within minutes (stage one on normal). He tried it again with the Wii remote and at least managed to make it to the half-way boss.

It's make or break for me. If Wii U developers put pointer controls into their FPS', I'll probably get one. If not, I won't. I enjoy a variety of games, but FPS multiplayers are where I go for brainless fun and the idea of returning to dual analogue is unacceptable to me. I realise Nintendo want to minimise the Wii remote because of how gamers rejected it, but the pointer was an amazing innovation and seismic leap forward for game control in many respects.

There is a sort of chick-or-the-egg type of argument with iOS games though. Is anyone buying iPhone to play iOS games? Or do they buy iOS games because they are available on the iPhone?

I am 100% with you that Nintendo should go the extra mile to court the iOS "indie" development scene (I advocated earlier in the thread for a new division based in the states to nurture indie game makers), but I don't know if an iOS-style ecosystem on Wii U is absolutely necessary. On 3DS? Absolutely. On Wii U they need to find a happier balance for digital platform.

I guess I'm just keen on an open dev platform for Wii U because I want to develop on it. :)

Even if they did something like "open indy" games are only allowed to play on the tablet controller or some restriction so as not to canabilise their full Wii U titles. The problem they have with an open system is that Nintendo (And others, I'm looking at you UbiSoft) will make games on a $10 budget and sell them for $40. Indy devs would wipe the floor with them.

But then so does upgrading to a 360. A lot of the 360's first year games were just PS2 ports that had ever-so-slightly better graphics. I guess nobody bothered buying 3rd party games on the 360 then.

You could have just conceded the point. It's not the same kind of upgrade, at all.

Upgrading a PC is an ongoing endeavour, whereas purchasing a 360 is a one time investment and infinitely more user-friendly.

It wouldn't be an unfair advantage if there's a remote and nunchuck packed-in with the console when it's released. It's just an extra (and plainly superior) control option. People can feel free to use the DRC if they want...but they'll be on a self-imposed disadvantage if they do so, not an unfair one.

The frustrating thing for me is that when Move first came out there wasn't a single developer that 'borrowed' the control scheme and, most importantly, the control scheme customisation that High Voltage Software pioneered with The Conduit in 2008. For some strange reason FPS games using Move still evolved in a similar way to pointer controls on the Wii despite all of the work already been done years ago. I haven't tried Resistance 3 yet but prior to the release of that game PS3 developers still hadn't nailed the controls for FPS games.

What I really want to see is a Left 4 Dead game coming to the U with Red Steel 2 controls. Playing Left 4 Dead 2 on my 360 and pressing a button to swing a melee weapon was a real letdown after playing Red Steel 2, same goes for the likes of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games too. That's why I was really looking forward to The Grinder...hopefully HVS have switched the development from the Wii to the U as their unprecedented lifetime licence for the Infinity engine will be very handy for that. ;oD

Uhh Not really. You don't have to get a new graphics card every year. Jesus. You can get one every 5 years and be confident knowing it outclasses any console on the market.

These days, with the majority of developers, if it isn't a built-in API, then they're going to try to reinvent the wheel from scratch. If High Voltage released a
let's face it: free, which isn't in their interests
plugin that was magically easy to implement on either platform, devs would just use it, because it'd mean they wouldn't have to expend any extra effort for the advantage.
