GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

^Hardware I can understand... Software I can not

So All I need to do now is add "<arguments><arg>ios=248</arg></arguments>" in the USB loader meta.xml? (WHich is in: Cfg_USB_Loader_70\inSDRoot\apps\USBLoader)
--
Just got my flash drive and the file system is FAT32.
So I can skip the NTFS steps of the USB loader and just do the meta.xml steps above?

----
Installing HBC, installed bootmii to boot2, backing up bootmii
---

I get Device not responding with USB loader

Gonna retry and make sure I'm doing the steps

Tried again and got:
"ERROR! (ret = -1)

---

Double checked and I did follow so....
Giving up... gonna uninstall everything

useing bootmii recovery and uninstalling bootmii and HBC

It was worth a try... may try again one day
There are actually several things you can do to try to attempt to avoid that error. Firstly, ensure the drive is plugged into the correct port. Secondly, try turning the drive on just before you start USB Loader. Thirdly, try turning the drive off and then back on again (or unplugging it from the USB and plugging back in) during Cfg's countdown. Fourthly, try reformatting the drive to NTFS and see if it can be detected then. If any of those work, there may be other ways to get it to recognise the drive.

FTPii & FireFTP and configured as per instructed but I get error message "Unable to make a connection. Please try again."

However there is one part of the instructions that is confusing me:

Code:
Windows Client (no installation necessary)

    Open "My Computer"
Type ftp://<IPADDRESS>/sd where <IPADDRESS> is the one displayed on your TV by FTPii.
You can now copy, move, and delete files using the standard Windows interface.
Note: to edit files, you will need to copy them to a local folder (e.g., the desktop), edit them and then copy them back.

Where am I supposed to be typing? In the 'Address' field of the 'My Computer' window?

Is this what is borking my attempts?

Halp please! :)
Yes, the Address field.

I may do that another day. I don't feel like trying again.

Turn on the Vid Patch option for the game. Also ensure the language setting is set to Japanese. There is a font that is only used by Japanese games and you need to turn on one of those patches to have them display correctly.

StartPatch doesn't have those options. What would be the best app to use?

Cfg (USB Loader). Use the disc loading functionality if you don't want to install the game to a drive or the SD. Gecko OS should also provide the options you need to get it running (although I think it might call the Vid Patch something else, or automatically apply it when you set language to Japanese).

I didn't know you could run gamecube games from anything but the disc. Didn't see any disc loading function in Cfg, unless I missed something. I'll try gecko then. thanks.

Oh right, I didn't take notice of the Gamecube bit. You still can use Cfg to play Gamecube games from disc (push - to access the menu that lets you use disc loading), but I'm fairly sure you can't use the options for GameCube games.

Gecko probably is the best alternative.

Clipper, I noticed in the tutorial that d2x v3.0 is not recommended. Whats the reasoning behind this? Is v3.1 fine to use?

I'm updating my wii and this d2x IOS is new since I've last updated. Anything of note since then feature wise or tips?

I've been meaning to update that line and just did :). I'd say there's probably nothing else new you'd need.

maybe my problem was using this flash drive?

I may just go to wal-mart and get a SanDIsk one.
I plugged in my 2GB one and I saw it light up behind the wii
Perhaps. The Data Traveler drives often come with multiple partitions with one of them being a control partition with some additional software and stuff for encryption or other things. You might have some luck if you repartition the Kingston one so that it is one big FAT or NTFS partition (save off the additional data that comes with the flash drive first so you can restore it later if you want). You'd use the GParted instructions in the tutorial to perform said reformatting.

Before you buy the Sandisk one, I'd definitely check if your 2GB one works first. Wii Sports should easily fit on there and you can use it as a test to see if the Wii likes the flash drive or not. Flash drives are typically quite finicky, though, so good luck.

I'm having a problem with cfg USB loader. When I install wii games from disc it works just fine, but when I install GameCube games (so I can load them in Dolphin) it insists on installing them to the SD card. I've used the cfg configurator program and configured it to use the USB drive, and it does so for Wii games. Anyone got any ideas about what I'm missing here?

As has been stated, GameCube games (on Wii) only run from SD Cards (and with GameCube and GameCube Memory Cards). At the moment there's no way to have them run from USB. There's a guy at GBATemp working on that it seems (along compatibility with Wiimote, Nunchuck e and Classic Controllers), but it's the reason why the original Dios Mios was finished: when going to Gamecube mode, the Wii just doesn't recognize the USB ports; so they managed some comatibiity back then but not much. It wasn't until recently that they discovered that the SD Card were still recognized "in Gamecube mode", and Dios Mios Lite was created.

With Dios Mios Lite you also need a disc (either Wii or GCN) to be able to run games, though updated versions allow some games to turn without a disc in the tray, but that's on a game per basis. Same way that there's an option to allow you to save to an SD Card instead of GCN Memory Cards, but as with the no-disc option; it doesn't work in all games.

In your case, you'll need to install the games to SD Card and then transfer that to the computer to use on Dolphin ,or use CleanRip (I think :p).

Thanks. I'm not trying to run the games on the Wii, I was just trying to use cfg to rip them to USB and it wouldn't let me. It's weird, I ripped the gc version of twilight princess the other day and I'm almost positive it ripped it to USB.

Well, no matter, I'll just use clean rip.

Of course maybe Clipper will probably pop by and say "ferncoa is wrong here do this and that!!"... :p

The tutorial says that there's no way on installing GameCube games and another user earlier had a similar problem and was because of that (i.e. trying to install GCN games to USB, but SD been the default and only way through 'Configurable').

EDIT:

fernoca is right there (apart from spelling his own name for some reason).
Oh shit! hahaha.. XD

fernoca is right there (apart from spelling his own name for some reason).

The Gamecube ripping is only in the further extensions of Cfg beyond the official releases and they are there for Dios Mios Lite which can only play games from the SD.

At some point, I plan to perhaps build the changes into the official Cfg and allow ripping to the USB with copying to the SD being part of the launch process, but that would be a lot of work and I don't have the time.

You should be able to use CleanRip to rip to the hard drive in the meantime.

Yeah, cleanrip is getting the job done. I would have preferred to use cfg as it does a much nicer job, putting every game into its own subdirectory, but cleanrip will do. Thanks for the help. :)

Hey guys.

My girlfriend has been playing Xenoblade Chronicles PAL on my roommate's Wii. Now that he's moving, we're trying to extract the save file and convert it to NTSC so that she can buy the game and continue on her own Wii.

We're having issues with Savegame Manager GX - most of the save files on the Wii don't show up. Does anyone have any experience doing this kind of save game hacking?

I just checked and it should be possible for you to copy the save to the SD using the Wii Menu itself. It's not a locked save.

Hey guys, I have a question about ripping isos. I'm sure this has been answered before, but I'm just making sure so I don't screw anything up.

I have HBC installed already. To rip gc/wii isos (for use with dolphin) to my usb HDD do I just need to install cleanrip? Or do I have to install anything else like the usb loader?

If all you want is to rip them for Dolphin, then CleanRip is your best choice.

Hmm, I can't seem to get CleanRip to work. Either it freezes or I get a DSI error.

False alarm. It wasn't waiting for my HDD to spin up and it was crashing sometimes as a result. Seems to work now.

I've been out of the loop for a long time....I hear we can play Gamecube games via SD card now!???

Yep, but there's significant issues with streaming/loading on some.

For example, on my ripped copy of Super Monkey Ball 2, there's no music (it's a streaming format) and serious slowdown throughout the menus. Actual gameplay is fine though. Burnt the same image to a DVD and when booted with gcbackuplauncher, it works perfectly - so it's not like the game was ripped incorrectly.

Haven't had chance to check other games, but I'm betting it really depends on your SD card's speed. If others work fine, it'll be great - my entire collection will fit on a 32gb card, and it's only £15 for me to buy one.

edit: here's a compatibility list, if you're interested: http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/DIOS_MIOS_Lite_Compatibility_List

Anyone have success with running WWF No Mercy on a Wii Emu? I can't hook up my 64 to my HD set and was wondering if it's worth going the Homebrew route.

Sweet. This is how Wii games started off, so any progress is good.

A new homebrew application for loading Gamecube games has been in the works for several months now. The guy's making great progress and his app actually manages to load Gamecube games from the Wii mode! What this means is that all of the functionality that the Gamecube mode would otherwise lock out is still available, so he's pretty much in full control. He's already got USB support working and even several audio streaming games that now have properly streamed audio. Here's his latest video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIA_uUP-UB4&feature=relmfu (Eternal Darkness with working audio streaming!)

Really great news, can't wait for the first release.

Hi
I´m using USB Loader GX with 249 revD2X, and it seems the backup of my Another Code: R copy is corrupted, the game always freeze in the same part (when Ashley find the dog inside the cabin), I tried make a new dump using 248 but I got the same error.

Help

Holy shit, now this fixes all my issues with miosdios. yay

edit: hype down majorly:

- I haven't completely decided on the "anti-piracy" method yet. The obvious path is to require the original disc in the drive but that won't work for the newer wiis since they can't accept GC discs. But they probably won't be supported by the initial release anyway, until wiimote/classic controller support is added. There are ways to tie disc images to nearly any piece of specific hardware including individual memory cards, wiimotes, SD cards and USB drives. And if I really don't want it to be "cracked", it probably won't be.

fuck. that. shit. The whole point of having my collection on a usb stick is so I don't need to have the disc in the tray.

I believe he's talking about needing the disc in the drive when you rip it. Not when you play it. Or perhaps to have it in the drive to activate the image for playback. Of course the app is useless if you need the disc in the drive when you play it.

I had similar ideas when I was considering adding a similar anti-piracy mode to Cfg. I ended up deciding not to bother as my method would require people that wanted to use it to rerip all their games, but if it's in there from the start like in this case, it shouldn't be a problem and will work quite well.

Still an issue - a good four or five of my GC games are too scratched to function anymore including rogue leader.

Gah, at least I have gcos multiboot and some dual layer discs to hand. USB for my wii collection, and a couple of dual layer discs for my GC games.

edit: I can't even find my smash bros disc either, lol

I tried a fresh dump with CleanRip and everything went fine =)

I used 3 games to make a gamecube multigame iso with MultiGame ISO Creator v3.5.4F, when I play it on my Wii using "NeoGamma R9 beta 56" the disk loads, I click "Launch Game on DVD" it goes to Neogamma back up launcher I click "Y for NTSC" it says Drive 20060526 ok!, GC2-DMS/D2A Drive Found!" then it just goes to Main Menu with the options "Boot DVD" and "Credits" I click boot dvd and the text "Place a Disk in the drive Press A to start the process..." shows up I press "A" then it just repeats s Drive 20060526 ok!,GC2-DMS/D2A Drive Found!... No games show up. Is there anysort of solution to this?

Hey guys. Tried the whole Wii homebrew thing this weekend. Did the d2x 249 method with CFG USB Loader. I was able to rip my copy of Smash Bros and everything was good. Now whenever I try to rip something it freezes at 0.0% or like .62%. I've tried GX Loader as well to rip and have the same error on both. Any tips?

Is there enough space on the drive you are installing to?

Quick question... I have a Black Wii. Is there any way at all to play DVD movies on it? Any new developments recently?

I can't remember if any of the earlier Black Wiis still had the old drive boards, but provided it's not one of those, then no, there's no way and likely won't be a way. The drives are somehow physically blocked from playing anything that's not a Wii disc. The only way to allow for it would be to replace the drive board with one from an older Wii.

Besides, playing DVDs in the Wii drives that could read them seemed to greatly affect the lifetime of the laser.

Hey GAF, was wondering if you could maybe help me or if someone knew what was going on with my Wii.

A couple of years back I bought the black Wii to replace the white Wii I had always had since launch due to both wanting the black Wii originally and also how good it looked in my living room set up!

Due to spending a small fortune on Wiiware etc I had to send both my white & new black Wii to Nintendo so that they could take everything (Wiiware, saves, etc) and place all of that onto the new console, leaving the old white one formatted as new.

Ever since this happened I have never been able to add contacts or send any messages whatsoever from the system menu. This was before and after I soft modded my console. After all these years I hoped an update along the way may have solved the problem but unfortunately this has not been the case.

I have a UK console but I have also seen other regions with a similar error I believe.

Upon trying to send a message I get the error code '110321' There is a problem with the WiiConnect24 service, please try again later. I still receive messages from Nintendo and can enter the shop channel etc but the personal touch of sending gifts, messages and adding contacts has always been lost since.

I emailed Nintendo in the UK a few times but have never had a response and they have not been of any help at all.

Is anyone aware of what this may be or of a solution? Even if there is any homebrew software out there that may help me or diagnose the problem?

Thanks!

Checking around, other people reported similar isues after receiving a Wii from Nintendo. It seems that the online works, just when it comes to send messages or receive them from your or friends it doesn't work;but every other messaging (like Mario Kart, etc.) works.

The closest to a solution seems to be.... calling Nintendo. Seems is a problem in their part and can be done through the phone:
From the N-Sider Forums:
They finally found out what was wrong with my Wii. The first time I sent it in for repair was for some problems with the graphics card. I was getting stray pixels during gameplay. Well I sent it in and upon return the pixellation had been fixed, however this new and incessant error, 110321 occured when sending messages to my Wii friends.

Well, after about six phone consultatios with Nintendo and two repair orders, they were able to finally pinpoint the problem. When my system was first sent in for repair and a new serial number was assiged to it, the repair tech. failed to assign my Wii Message Number to that new serial.

Fortunately they were able to fix the problem from thier side so I didn't have to send my Wii in again. When I checked my e-mail from work this morning I found that a flood of "Test" messages I had sent myself from my Wii came rolling in. I'm glad they were able to solve the problem as I have always placed a great deal of faith in Nintendo in regards to thier customer care.
Now there could be an alternative through homebrew or something, but at least it seems to be that the problem was that when Nintendo did the exchange of downloads; they deactivated the other console's number and forgot to re-activate it.

Actually just found this myself tonight and it seemed to be the only reply I could find online at all that seemed to indicate a solution to the problem so I may have to see if Nintendo UK can do this.

Thank you very much for the reply. This has frustrated me for ages so hope this can resolve the issue.

For some reason, the last two games I've installed with the USB Loader won't download the covers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check if they're on the WiiTDB site for one. Otherwise, make sure you have space on your SD card if you have it set to store the covers there.

Hey, I'm running into an issue with backing up GC saves.

I've tried a couple apps off the Homebrow Browser: NuGaSa and GCMM, and I can't extract GameCube saves with any of them. NuGaSa crashed after an attempt (it DID create the sd:/GCSAVES directory though), and GCMM couldn't even find the memory card. Save Game Manager EX seems to not even acknowledge the GameCube slots. What app should I use to extract the saves? Anything I might have overlooked? The Cube card is in slot A/1 and the SD card has plenty of space.

Make sure the memory cards are not first party and even if they're third-party, not all of them work.

I recently saw a "newer" GCN Memory Card Manager which apparently worked on many memory cards and you could transfer stuff easier than NuGASa and GCMM...but I don't remember it having an official name, just "GameCube Memory Manager" andt that it worked on Dolpin too and also created ".raw files".... so searching around for it, doesn't bring much results...other than the ones mentioned already. But I do remember seeing and reading about better compatibility than those other two.

But a key across most if not all of them is that they don't work with first-party memory cards.

This would be a problem if I was trying to extract my own saves, but I'm doing it for a friend who has a MadCatz 16x memory card. NuGaSa read the card's contents just fine, but gave me a crash dump when I hit "A" to back up the first on the list.

So you're saying there's another GCMM (or similar app) out there? Hmmm. I'll take a look. If anyone else knows anything, please post or PM me. :)

Found it..no wonder ..name's CTR-GCS Daco Taco Edition. :p

It worked for a friend, even with an official memory card but haven't tried it.

Sent this as a PM too.
