GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Hey guys, I'm currently (still) using WBFS on my external HDD. Should I be changing to NTFS or FAT32?

My HDD is some shitty brand, so I'm planning on buying a new one in the next few weeks or months. Which file system should I go with?

This might be a bit unusual, but I just got a Wii second-hand that has already had homebrew installed. The trouble is, I don't have any details about what's been done to it and some of it doesn't even work (i.e. USB loader doesn't work properly unless used in a very specific way), so I think the best thing to do would be to a) get it back to factory settings and then b) do everything myself.

The a) part is the bit that I'm a bit stuck on. Can I just upgrade it to the latest system version from Nintendo and then format it? Is there any risk aside from the inherent risk in updating?

(NB: The jacket for the Wii Remote is also dusty and gross as fuck, so any advice on cleaning it wouldn't go amiss either!)

Just treat the Wii as unhacked and go from there. There's no need to delete the stuff, just install over it. Feel free to delete any channels that you don't want, as there should be no risk there.

This page of the GAF guide spells it out all very nicely:

http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader

Thanks :) Looks like I'm going to go with NTFS, just because I don't feel like ripping my games anymore. I just want to transfer them from one HDD to another.

Also, I'm still on v60 for USB Cfg and on.. some old ass stuff. But everything so far works. Do I even need to update to d2x? I don't plan on getting newer games like Skyward Sword or anything like that. I guess I answered my own question, LOL.

Thanks. I had some weird errors (like having version 54321 of the shop channel when I was trying to update it) but I managed to work out how to deal with it.

Warm soapy water and rinse?

Nintendo were giving them out free ages ago when people were throwing them at their television screens so you could try your region's Nintendo site to see if that offer is still open. I doubt it but no harm in checking.

You are welcome :).

Seems like it :).

However, as I'm sure you've seen, the GAF guide is very nicely structured to help you make that decision.

I am attempting to install cfg usbloader on my wii I am having a problem when I do what the tutorial says click homebrew channel I do not see the file to install.

Ensure you have the named file in the directory that was requested. There should be a file called:

/apps/<something>/boot.dol

on either the SD or hard drive, and if you are using the hard drive it must be FAT formatted and you should unplug any SD card.

I haven't updated my cIOS or w/e it is since early 2011, so I'm really behind. What should I do to update it to the newest d2x?

http://gwht.wikidot.com/d2x

Can I just go ahead and install it by following the instructions?

Thanks for the reply there is boot.dol in the apps/usbloader directory I put the folder in the root of my sd card not root apps folder I plan to use kingston datatraveler 100 g2 flash drive.

I'm not sure what you mean by root apps folder, so perhaps that's where the confusion is coming from. The correct location on the SD card is sd:/apps/usbloader/boot.dol where sd: is the drive name assigned to your SD card. Provided you have the SD card plugged in, then the HBC should detect and show you a button for the app when you start it. If you're up to USB Loader, you should have already used several other apps in this way too, so I can't see why you wouldn't see this one. Perhaps you need to navigate to the second page of apps?

I have a apps folder on my sd card where homebrew channel is where I put ios d2x without problem do I put files in same folder as homebrew channel? from tutorial unzip the Configurable USB Loader .zip file and copy the contents of Cfg_USB_Loader##/inSDRoot to sd:/ where ## is the version number.

You may be asked if you want to merge the directories. Answer yes.
After this step, you should have a folder called sd:/usb-loader which contains some files and subdirectories and another folder called sd:/apps/USBLoader that contains boot.dol and some other files.

Yes.

Figured it out thanks

So I finally took my Wii apart. Got a new spindle motor coming for all of $0.64 plus shipping. Price seems fishy but, meh. As long as I can install all of the gamecube games I've been itching to play for so long now. A couple quick things I found out:

- Without the DVD drive installed, the HBC seems to work fine, as does any software, until you try to load a game in Config. I'm guessing there's some processor on the drive unit that's being used even though the games are played from USB.

- Everything works like a charm without the spindle motor installed however.

- A USB 2.0 hub plugged into the low power USB port works fine with the wired LAN adapter and a keyboard while dedicating the other port to a HDD for Config. Don't know why I was concerned about this not working, but there ya go.

Haven't updated my Wii for a couple of years and I'm interested in getting up to date so I can try the new loaders that will play my GameCube backups from SD card.

I fear I'm pretty behind on cIOS updates and whatnot... is there any up-to-date step-by-step guide for updating everything that must be outdated by now?

The tutorial was great...

BUt i seem to be running into a small issue...

When tryin to install (using USB Loader) a game i keep getting the message telling me to add (ntfs_write = 1) to the config file.

I use the AWESOME program that came bundled with the USb loader slected the correct option, have the program create a new config file, replace the old one witht he new one....

But still keep getting the error that NTS write is disabled.. but the config file says other wise..

Any ideas?

You likely have the config file in the incorrect location. Check the Global Options page to find out where that is. It's in the menus somewhere, or you can use the following button sequence to get to the console version from the GUI:

B (go to Console)
1 (go to Options page)
1 (go to Global Options)

It will then be listed under config location and possibly additional config location if it is using two files (or text similar to that).

Yep, that was it, I had the correct config file, but didn't copy it over to the SD card!!!

Thank you (And thanks to everyone who put together the guide)

(Now i don't have to listen to my buzz saw sounding Wii any more.... well at least once i rip some of my game to the hard drive!!)

Not sure where to post this, but do any of you guys have experience with repairing a wii?

I bought a broken one on ebay for 25 bucks, just because I thought if I could get it to work it'd be a great deal, and if I didn't get it to work I'd have the AC Adapter/AV Cables/Sensor Bar and could just get a console itself. I also thought it came with a controller/nunchuck but that was my fault for not reading the description properly.

Anyway, the Wii gets power (the red light comes on) but when I push the button, the disc tray flashes blue and it shuts off immediately. I just ordered a tri-wing screwdriver so I can open it, but it won't come until monday.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem? I just sort of plan on taking it apart and making sure everything is connected properly and cleaned

I believe the disc tray flashing is an indication of BootMii being installed in boot2. Try putting an SD card with the BootMii executable stored on it in the drive (preparing the sD with another Wii is the easiest way) to see if you get to the BootMii menu. That will let you know if it's a hardware issue or not, at least.

I haven't done much to this Wii in the living room and i recently updated to what i thought was a safer more recent up date v70R35, and i get this whenever i try to play a game :/ What do i do to fix this?

You can't inline Google Mail attachments so we can't see the image.

Missed this when you posted it, thanks for the response.

It was a virgin wii that I fixed and then subsequently fried :P

Hey guys, just curious what cIOS do you use in CFG USB Loader? Looking at my settings screen I am using:

IOS248 (r21006)
Base: IOS 56 d2x v6

I just noticed that there is a v8 and v9 beta versions out now, should I upgrade to these. Or does it really matter?

I noticed there's no guide to use Dios Mios on the GAF Wii homebrew website. I have far more GC games than Wii games that I'd like to back up to USB... is there a guide in the works? It seems really confusing to install.

It's quite easy. All you need to do is Google diosmioslite (its on Google code) install that using a WAD manager, and then update Configurable USB Loader to the latest version (mod, i think) and then you can just install your Gamecube games the same way you do wii, by putting them in the disc slot.

Oh, and you can only install to SD Card thus far. So buy a 32gb one like I did, each game is about 1.4gb.

Any ideas guys? Should I just start from new?

So can any recommend any good long tracks to replace the background music of CFG USB Loader? I do like that tune, but I've heard it so much I think it's time for a change.

Also, did anyone ever create covers for Pikmin (and other New Play Control games) that didn't have the ugly New Play Control borders?

I use a bunch of MP3s I ripped from my Mario and Zelda Big Band CD. That way, I get a randomly selected Mario or Zelda tune every time I start it.

Yeah, I figured that'd be the smart way to go. Using the NSMB theme, so I downloaded some songs from Super Mario Allstars.

Also used my brain and found where the nice covers of Pikmin were.

Is this still true?

A few days ago Crediar who made Dios Mios released the regular version (not lite). From what I understand you can now install GC to USB but I may be wrong.

Also can anybody tell me if there is a way to easily install wiiware and vc games to usb and have them show up in CFG like regular games?

Dude it says right in the image. Update your cIOS.

So is it just me, or has anyone else realised that DIOS MIOS v2.0 (gamecube USB loader support) is out? It's fucking awesome. Just put all my GC games onto a separate FAT32 partition on my USB HDD (wouldn't work until I formatted it to 32kb clusters), and it runs from CFG like a fucking dream.

Tested all of my Gamecube games (ripped 18 of them so far), and so far no issues whatsoever. Playing through Twilight Princess right now.

Looks like it's time for me to get around to testing that and getting it into the FAQ.

Won't happen until next week, though, as I'm away from my Wii...

I plan on doing this in the next few days. Does formatting to 32kb cause any trouble for Wii wbfs games on the same partition?

Also, is it just a matter of updating to the latest cfg mod release and installing the dios mios 2.0 wad?

Personally, as someone who still has a few GC games but no GC controllers or memory cards anymore, what I'm looking for is:

- GameCube support <-- check
- Using a USB device to load the games <-- check, not check --> ideally the same WBFS/FAT/NTFS setup as USB loaders
- Using a USB device as a memory card <-- sort of check
- Classic controller support <-- :(

I plan on doing this in the next few days. Does formatting to 32kb cause any trouble for Wii wbfs games on the same partition?

Also, is it just a matter of updating to the latest cfg mod release and installing the dios mios 2.0 wad?

What I did:

1. Downloaded the DIOS MIOS 2.0 WAD, and the DiscEx conversion program.

2. Installed the WAD onto the Wii using the Wad manager.

3. By dragging and dropping, converted my ripped GC ISO's using DiscEx.

4. Created a new partition on my USB HDD (60gb was fine for me), and formatted it as FAT32 with 32kb clusters (tried it without that step, and it didn't work).

5. Set that partition as the PRIMARY one, and the NTFS one (for the Wii games) as logical/secondary. The GC partition MUST be primary, or it won't work.

6. Created a folder in the FAT32 partition named "games", and copied the converted GC game folders into there.

7. Updated CFG USB Loader to the newest version.

8. All done! It boots automatically into the Gamecube partition, and using the option in the CFG USB Loader, I can easily switch over to the Wii partition whenever I want to.

Personally, as someone who still has a few GC games but no GC controllers or memory cards anymore, what I'm looking for is:

- GameCube support <-- check
- Using a USB device to load the games <-- check, not check --> ideally the same WBFS/FAT/NTFS setup as USB loaders ONLY FAT32 is possible due to literally all the swap space in the Wii being used up by DIOS MIOS USB. There's only 500kb of space available for it! NTFS would use far too much space for it to be possible, and WBFS is pointless.
- Using a USB device as a memory card <-- sort of check Can't happen with DIOS MIOS USB due to the above reason
- Classic controller support <-- :( Same as above, again.

Was all stated by Crediar when he released the full version.

Thanks for the step by step! So Wii and GC games must be on different partitions? even if both are FAT32?

They don't have to be. It's just the way I did it, because I didn't want to move all the Wii games from where they currently are! Because of the format limitations of FAT32, I would have had to use Wii Backup Manager to move them all aswell (well, the large file size ones). Too much hassle for myself.

Either way, I used the free version of Easeus Partition Manager. It worked brilliantly.

cool, thanks! I currently have a fat32 drive with all my wii games on it, and enough room to spare, so I can just copy over my GC games (assuming it's formatted with 32kb clusters which I will check). If for some reason that doesn't work I'll do as you suggested.

p.s. just to be sure, you're now running cfg 70 mod r36?

: O

I... I thought this was actually impossible due to technical reasons I don't understand.

This... this changes everything!

Now if only the Wii was GBA-link-cable compatible... I'll have to stick to using emulators to play four-player Zelda for good :(

edit - awwww create a FAT32 partition? Man, that's like, effort.
