Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

Wii U will appeal to all Nintendo fans despite the name, and the "Wii" name will appeal to "casuals" aka the important people.

If anything, next generation will be a battle of preventing consumers from having to pick up another console... like what happened with Wii --> 360/PS3. But that's just my assumption.

So Nintendo created this huge selling iconic brand "Wii" and now they should throw that all away to gain a niche audience who left them a long time ago???

Great business sense.

I'd much rather they name it what they want to name it and try to appease the crowd that left them somewhat with a good variety of titles that attract these people.

More like never had them to begin with. Personally I'm fine with the name as it is. And just some have done on this board before, I assume you'll hear more people calling it "The U" anyway even if some will associate that with the Miami Hurricanes.

Yeah. Just adding a number is why the PS2 failed.

The thing is, a number clearly tells you what you're getting. Wii U is a modifier, like DSi.

Not to mention the box looks almost identical to the Wii. They really need to choose a new color and change the design. Make it blatantly obvious that this is not just a Wii controller or minor upgrade, but an entirely new console. I guess we'll have to wait and see how they approach the marketing for this thing.

Nintendo will always have the kiddy image..

For example, the 3DS has games like this:

The Vita has games like this:

But the Vita is considered hardcore, while the 3DS is considered kiddy.

Does Vita even have a public image? It's so irrelevant, and none of the games on it sell.

Wii U seems like a fine name. You can use your Wii peripherals with it, after all. Changing the console itself might help change perception, I guess.

What do I know? I thought "Wii" was a horrible mistake at the time...

The way I see it... IGN are always wrong.

They thought the 3DS needed two sticks - it didn't
They thought the Vita was set to succeed - it didn't
They think the Wii U needs a name change.....

Yeah bro, don't you see the 21 year old men walking around urban centres throwing down on their Vitas?

Only the Vita point is something you can definitely say they were wrong about. (Why am I sticking up for IGN? I hate that shithole.)

Super Nintendo had to be the clearest nonnumerical system name ever. It doesn't work outside the 90s context, of course.

True. With Nintendo's tendency to copy certain things from Apple, those possible trademark issues would be the most likely thing to cause a name change IMO.

In my completely unbiased opinion

Clearly. :)

That's one of the reasons I hate that part of the name or I would hate it being called "Nintendo U".

But we are in the minority, most probably wouldn't make that association.

Yeah, I'm thinking of that being used by the dudebro group.

No, I am not, and that's really just the...tip of the ignorant iceberg. The Zimmerman thread and the one thread that had this White Oppression Defense Force were my recent favorites.

Off-topic now, but just know, Wii-UGAF...BlackGAF understands

I'm gonna make a request for Wave Race Wii-U. I thought Blue Storm was a great launch title for the GC, not just because it was a pretty decent game, but it really showed off the water physics and weather effects the system could do. It's one of those games that sell because there's literally nothing else on the console, but goddamnit, I liked it.
Anyone know what Monster Games is working on? If they have nothing else going on...

WAVE EXCITE RACE

So IGN is the Pachter of the gaming industry.
Oh, wait…

Ah, I see Nintendo of America's "Kirby" team has been hired by Sony.

(Do I go down this road? What the hell...)

360 is a modifier as well! As is Gameboy Advance, which wasn't hindered by the name. It's only the fact that the DS had so many iterations and was still going strong that people at first might have assumed 3DS was just another version w/ autostereoscopic capabilities and the same games.

But Nintendo has never done this with their consoles. And the 3DS had bigger problems than the name. Nintendo may be overly conservative in some areas in the view of most, but once you hit upon a successful brand, it's wise to ride it out a little bit while it's still culturally relevant. Wii is is still as modern a brand as iPod, Playstation, etc. There's absolutely no reason to alienate the audience they gained on Wii. If anything, they believe those new gamers are now ready for a bit more as they grew from Wii Sports to NSMB, to Zelda: SS, and thus Aliens, Darksiders, Batman, etc.

I agree with Anth0ny on this one, just by having the name "Wii" in it, it's gonna hurt its image when presented to core gamers.

The perception issue will be there, regardless. It has roots all the way back to the "Nofriendo Lamecube" and any change to that isn't going to matter.

What WILL change the image is a deluge of titles aimed at the hardcore gamer, with clearly improved graphics and marketing to match. The name won't matter if the software's there. At all.

It's all about presentation and having the goods to back it up. Hell, just look at what Cadillac had accomplished in the last 10 years or so with their brand. Does anybody consider them to be a retired person's Metamucil-mobile any more?

I think you and I are the only ones requesting that unfortunately. If Wii U launched with another wave race, it would be the first console I will buy at launch.

I always found this arguement to be ridiculous. I found it to be ridiculous with the 3DS as well. If Nintendo has a hit product that strongly appeals to a certain crowd(hardcore or casual) they will figure out how to play the game.

I find it hilarious how people act as if general consumers are complete idiots but can still quite easily figure out, discerne and quickly buy the next minimally upgraded Apple product in droves. If Nintendo comes out with another title that sparks a similar phenomenon as Wii Sports/Wii Fit did than consumers will have no problem figuring out that Wii U is the next console and will decide whether it's worth purchasing or not. Just like with 3DS where once interesting games showed up on the system, no one questioned that it was the succesor the DS and not a lite/i modifier.

Yeah. Just adding a number is why the PS2 failed.

Ah but its a two-part process. Where the "tacking" on of a 2 might have caused some confusion, I can at least say the PS2 was Damn well marketed. And another thing is what the PS2 name is associated with. For the most part, I don't think the PS1 left a sour taste in people's mouth, whereas the Wii U name alone will bring up memories of the Wii.

It's all about what proceeds it.

Keeping the Wii brand is as smart a business decision as Nintendo could have made. If it delivers on software, it will attract "core" gamers. And the real money is in the casual segment anyways, so Wii is the way to go.

Yes, which is a good thing when 94 million families bought one.

So far, they have barely differentiated themselves from the Wii at all. Of course, it's way too early to tell if the name will really mean anything, but if they want to pick up a whole other audience, keeping a near identical logo, a near identical box, and an aesthetic for the controller that can easily pass for a Wii peripheral may be troubling.

GBA looked like a totally new system. 360 looked like a totally new system. If they play a commercial for Wii U that focuses on the controller, has NSMB Mii playing on the screen, and keeps that logo above... people are going to think it's just a Wii controller. I had three friends/family members ask me if I saw the new Wii controller during the weeks after E3.

I absolutely agree they could do a much better job on the logo and case design. I am adamant about keeping the Wii brand, and tbh Wii U is better than any alternative I've heard so far.

I think it could have mass appeal if done right.

Moreso than F-Zero.

Blue Storm was great. I'd buy it. And the controller is big enough to ride like a jet ski.

I pray Nintendo has the same mindset but I'm not holding my breath. I just hope Nintendo doesn't take too long to release Blue Storm on vc. I salivate playing that right on the tablet.

Has Nintendo even confirmed vc games can be streamed and played on the controller? I always assumed it was.

the stunts might be a bit difficult

it should come with an inflatable jetski accessory, much like that kart seat that's out for the Wii ;P

lol, I would actually buy that.

Call me crazy, but I think the "Wii" in "Wii U" is of a darker grey than the original Wii.

People act like we've had a Wii, nWii, Wii Betta, and Wii XL so that by the time Wii U comes out it'll be confusing if Wii U is finally the next one. Hint: those never happened.
