I've always thought copying something that works is a good thing, as long as it is not to a disgustingly blatant degree (i.e copying assets).
I've heard this said multiple times. What type of game do you think Smash Bros is?
It's a party game. I'm not saying that in a negative manner, Melee is a fun MP game. Brawl is just a bad game.

I really have little interest in a hardcore fighting game with these characters and I lost Street Fighter etc. It will work so much better as a brawl style game and potentially allow it to appeal to a wider audience. I'm gong to be dissapointed if it's a traditional fighting game (and thankfully all signs point towards it being like Smash Brothers).
Yikes, sorry you feel that way. While I feel Melee was a bit better than Brawl, I don't think Brawl was outright bad. And about the party tag, I think that's a pretty accurate description. Smash Bros is one of, if not, THE best game to play with your friends.
Hopefully Smash Bros. Next rectifies what you felt was wrong with Brawl.

I could have sworn the original hinted character list was larger. I remember Wander from Shadow of the Colossus being on it.
Anyway I think these characters need to be in this game due to iconic PS history

I don't think the game will come close to the success of Smash Bros., but I think it will sell well enough to justify its existence, assuming it's a good game.
Although, more importantly, why is your single concern about the game regarding its potential sales? You seemingly show no interest in how good the game is, what it plays like, what characters are in, etc. You just come in here and immediately dismiss the entire idea based on your notion that it won't sell. Why should you be so concerned with the sales rather than the actual quality of the game?
My first thoughts upon hearing of the game were "I wonder if it's going to play like Smash Bros.? I can't wait to do a Ratchet and Clank vs. Jak and Daxter match." Not "Shit, will this sell more than 1 million units in its first 6 months?!"
So the next GI cover will be this game?

I don't recall that coming from the main leaks so far. I would definitely take a SOTC stage at least though, if Wander isn't in.

I remember someone in the speculation thread waaaaay back when this was first hinted at suggesting characters like Cat (I believe who is from Gravity Rush/Daze for Vita, someone might correct me on that) and Emmet Graves from Starhawk may (or rather should) be included to help push those games. I think that would be a good idea.
As you've said, Sony need to make their characters more iconic and I would hope that future iterations of this game don't require 3rd party characters to help sell the product.

And yes, it would be great if Kat and Emmett make it in. Diversity is always nice.
I especially hope Kat makes it.

Those are definitely the 5 third parry characters that should be in (as long as there aren't any licensing disagreements). Their games all played a major role in building the PS brand. A Resident Evil character would also make sense. I'd prefer Jill, but i'm sure that it'd probably end up being Leon or Chris.

I'd rather it NOT be like that. Jump Superstars did a better job of it. You COULD ring out if you destroyed the walls, but most of the time it was possible to just KO other players.

Yeah, I'm hoping its a more casual, light-hearted fighter in the vein of Smash Bros. rather than a complex combo fighter like Marvel vs. Capcom. I absolutely suck at competitive fighting games like that.

As everyone has said before, Brawl feels a lot slower/floaty. I won't say more so I do not spark the competitive fighting game/party game debate.
Melee is one of my favorite games of all time. If there is a nice online community or friends get this game, I will probably pick this up.
edit: Where was the survey/leaked source that confirms the list of characters so far? I have never seen that.

I really hope James Bond rumor is fake. That would just seem way out of place. The only game James Bond is known for is Goldeneye on the N64. There are tons of first party characters that would better fit that spot, I bet. They should keep third party characters to a minimum and just have ones that are iconic to the Playstation name, like Snake, Cloud/Sephiroth, Crash, and Spyro.
And yeah, if it's going to be like Smash then more Melee and less Brawl. Brawl was way too slow and didn't feel nearly as good as Melee.

I wonder if Sackboy will be kind of like Kirby, with the ability to use the other characters' powers.

- Serge (Chrono Cross)
- Dart (Legend of Dragoon)
- Kazuma Kiryu (Yakuza)
- Kanon (Wild Arms 2 - would never happen, for me)
- Rudy (Wild Arms)
- Noctis from Versus XIII (Yes, even though the game isn't out yet, it'd be sweet but also unlikely!)
- Eight or Nine (Final Fantasy Type-0)
That's about it for me... again, a lot of those characters would be unlikely but that's what would make me personally happy.

Ubisoft is pretty chummy with Sony right? I would expect the four Assassins (Altair, Ezio, Connor, Desmond) as characters, and Rayman or something.
How many 3rd party characters do people actually expect or think is realistically possible?

Sony has pretty strong relationships with people like Ubisoft and EA, I would expect around 5-8.
