New PS3 Exclusive Revealed Next Week On GTTV (Superbot's PS All-Stars)

It's not like all the characters in the Smash Bros. games are equally iconic. It's completely possible to take a lesser known character and make them more popular by including them in the roster. Surely King Dedede or whoever the fuck wasn't as well known as Mario or Samus. But in hindsight, all the Smash Bros. characters seem more iconic even if they weren't iconic to begin with.

Exactly. Characters like Kratos, Nathan Drake, Sackboy, Snake, and Cloud are all iconic and popular enough to draw people's interest (I would say all of those characters are at least on the level of Samus, but not Mario), and then if the game is good, they might buy it and become aware of other characters like Wander or Parappa.

Is there somewhere that you can watch it live that isn't on TV? Does it air the same time on GTTV?
I don't think so, but they typically put it up on Gametrailers very quickly after it airs, so you won't have long to wait.

I think what you're mentioning is something that worries some of us. How far will Sony dig for these characters? Will they just play it safe by picking characters that a lot of gamers will instantly recognize? Even a character like Fat Princess is kind of a safe pick if they're going in that direction. It's a popular current gen title.

Part of what makes the Smash lineups so good is that Nintendo is willing to dig into obscure or just really old titles/products. We've seen them include R.O.B., Mr. Game & Watch, Nana and Popo (Ice Climbers) etc. But will Sony do the same? Will they dig into the PSone catalog to pull out characters like Tomba, Robbit (Jumping Flash) or something completely off the wall like Little Devil (Devil Dice)? Will they find a way to include the Pocketstation (which would probably be more like an item in the game)? My worry is that they won't.

this.

this is exactly how i feel about Sony Smash bros.

Is S-E realistically willing to allow Cloud Strife in third party media?

And despite that this will probably garner ire from the Nintendo afficianados - I don't think the likes of Samus Aran has particularly high mainstream appeal these days. Certainly no more than several of the characters that could be in a PlayStation fighting game.

From the SSBB roster, the characters that I would put in that class are essentially the Mario-related characters, Zelda-related characters and Pokemon.

You can download Final Fantasy 7 costumes for LBP so I think Square is ok with letting them borrow their image.

It's a very reasonable concern. It's just hard for me to imagine they'll stick exclusively to their current gen stable which is full of mostly humanoid, realistic (i.e. bland) characters. This kind of game is a chance to lighten things up, make things flashy and cartoony, and get away from gritty bald men for a little while.

Sony already has a recent history of FF7 characters in LBP, so I would assume SE would be ok with it in this game (and I hope Sony would be smart enough to realize how many people would love Cloud/Sephiroth in this game and how iconic they are for Playstation).

Also, I agree that Samus isn't on the same level of appeal as Mario and Pikachu, which is why I said Kratos, Drake, etc. where on her level and not Mario or Pikachu :P

Mario, Pikachu, and Link are really the only characters Nintendo has that are more iconic/recognizable than Sony's best. I think most people, especially if they're at all into gaming, will be able to recognize at least a couple characters in the Sony Smash game.

I also think Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank are (or used to be) pretty recognizable as well. At least more so than people give them credit for.

If they get this game completely wrong it'll be disappointing because there's already a perfect franchise to ape the concept off of (Smash Bros.) and they've had years to figure out how to do that.

Really hope it ends up amazing.

I'm less concerned about them sticking to current gen characters and more concerned about them sticking to known characters in general. Here are some of the rumored characters

Confirmed from Survey:
Nathan Drake
Kratos
Ratchet&Clank
Parappa
Sweet Tooth*leaked by dev*

Rumor characters from leaked source:
Sly Cooper
Colonel Mael Radec
Fat Princess
Sackboy
Jak & Daxter
Nariko
James Bond

Those are all easy picks if you're choosing popular characters. You could easily fill a roster of 20+ characters or so with known Playstation characters. But that would be relatively boring in terms of potential choices. There's rumored to be around two dozens characters in the game and that's 14 down already. That doesn't leave much wiggle room for the third party characters and lesser known first party characters.

James Bond? Really? Lol

Product placement agreement. He's in this game while Daniel Craig uses a PS3 to access the MI6 database in the new movie.

I actually kind of like that he's in this if it's true similar to Snake in Brawl. Think of all the badass gadgets he could use in this game on top of hand to hand and his trusty Walther handgun. The more variety, the better. I don't know how it'll work with the style of the game, but there's plenty of clashes in terms of art styles in the list so far.

I want Boomer from SOCOM to be a character who has suicidal moves and specializes in friendly fire...

This is the first game in thexseries and it will need all the popular and recognizable character it can get to push people into buying the game. 24 character is not that many in this kind of games. Focus on the popular guys first because they'll be the one selling the game and thrown in a little oldies for variety.

Then if the game sold good, they can go nuts for the sequel

They can fill the majority of the roster with well known characters. I'm just talking about including some lesser known characters. The original Smash Bros only had 12 spots, so they didn't have much room to experiment with lesser known characters (although they did include Captain Falcon). That's not the case with this if it does have a 20+ character roster.

Agreed. Or DLC if they feel so inclined even if I'm not a fan of that trend. It's at least an option for people to get their favorite characters that might not be as well known (still popular though in their own ways) while they have enough big characters at launch to convince people to get it. That way they can keep enticing people to buy it when their favorite characters that weren't in launch are released and they can make some extra money. So they can make a solid launch lineup with a few lesser known characters, but add to that with DLC to get more people on board and keep the game fresh for people who tire out.

As I said, I'm not a huge fan of the DLC trend but if it's something worthwhile that wasn't ready at launch, then that'd be fine since waiting for a sequel that may never happen would suck.

If there IS a sequel (PS4), then they should have a good batch of characters ready for that game to convince people it's a new game and not just the same old thing, but the generation upgrade would help out there too. :P

In the end, all I care about is solid online play. Brawl was a huge letdown for me because my friend and I couldn't play together smoothly online which killed it in this age of MP gaming. That's what gives a game longevity and we could only meet up to play so many times before I got stationed halfway across the country.

Most of the obscure stuff didn't get in until the game became massively popular. I don't think that's a fair concern at all.

How many 3rd party characters do people actually expect or think is realistically possible?

Depends on the total roster I guess, but going by the 24 that is reported then I'd say 5 third party characters is a healthy number. And they should all have heavy ties with the Playstation brand. So...

Cloud
Lara Croft
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro
Old-ass Snake

...would be perfect I think. Maybe swap Spyro for Kazuma Kiryu.

I'll argue that the game will be better off without any guest character or just 1 or 2 character at most.

by making it no guest character or limited guest character, the game is making statement that it is mainly about Sony character and that any guest character is merely a bonus. give them too much guest character at once for their first game in the series, it will set people's expectation for more guest characters

say they have 5 character for the first game. in the sequel, fans expectation will rise and they will want more and more. and soon enough people won't care about the Sony lineup and more excited about the guest character, which Sony can't easily promise or provide. and those that Sony can somehow provide may not be appreciated if it's not what the fans want.

not to mention something may happen and Sony lost the deal of certain guest character in the sequel, the backlash will be big, even if there's a logical explanation like maybe the 3rd party publishers start demanding too much that it's not feasible for Sony to try to keep said character, but the fans won't care about any of that. pretty soon you'll get people saying not buying the game is certain character isn't in it etc.

just easier and neater to stay off guest character or just limited number that it's easier to manage. focus on making the game good first rather than pursuing third party guest character imo.

even more reason to stay off third party character or don't put too much importance to them. or at least make sure that you can manage it well. the more third party character they have in the game, the harder it will be to actually maintain all of them imo.

Sony Smash Brothers would be a pretty good title, actually. This All-Stars thing just reminds me of WWE and Jump!.

What did Superbot develop before this?

So lets hear opinions.
If Snake makes it what Snake do you want?

MGS1 Snake (classic)
MGS2 Snake (done in SSB)
MGS2 Pliskin
MGS3 Big Boss
MGS4 Old Snake (worst version of Snake)
MGS4 Young Snake

I would go with MGS1 Snake then he can also represent the PS1.

This is not going to end well imho...

Challenging Smash Bros so directly and with a new studio, having such an inhomogeneous rooster and hoping on a good netcode (when PSN is not so loved for his games netcode...) makes me think to an almost sure failure...

I don't want this kind of challenges or game genere duplication...

Lol. Try harder.

To differentiate themselves from SSB they could go with Big Boss, or even MGS4 Raiden.
