1 or 2 at the most. How many 3rd party characters do people actually expect or think is realistically possible?

See I find this more reasonable.
The way some folks list work, half of it wouldn't be Sony characters

Yeah I think we definitely see more as DLC.If the game actually sells, more third party developers would be willing to put their characters there. They could always release them via DLC.
Yeah, I'm hoping its a more casual, light-hearted fighter in the vein of Smash Bros. rather than a complex combo fighter like Marvel vs. Capcom. I absolutely suck at competitive fighting games like that.
edit: What is this Power Stone game everyone talks about? I've never heard of it.
Honestly, the only third party characters worth mentioning are:
1. Cloud
2. Ryu
3. Solid Snake
4. Mega Man

If this one is in the game... oh boy, I don't wanna hear the screams...
Yeah it looks like they are getting rather big as well.Same here, but in all honesty, its about damn time Sony showcases their first party. As long as this "Superbot" is credible.
Did someone say Superbot was a studio with ex-ND and ex-Santa Monica employees?
My only request is that they did as deep into their history as Nintendo did with Brawl...I dont even like Nintendo properties all that much but Ill be damned if I didnt read every trophy description and flip through the enitre sticker book

That would be cool, maybe something like what DW have.My only request is that they did as deep into their history as Nintendo did with Brawl...I dont even like Nintendo properties all that much but Ill be damned if I didnt read every trophy description and flip through the enitre sticker book
EDIT: I dont even thinki I care how it plays, just that the history is there and that it is true to the IPs
I mean the little touches -- animations, style, all of that jazz. It has to be almost comical looking and very appealing. Lots of little details that infuse the player with a sense of whatever series the character stems from.
Ah I hate to do this and swear I will never do it again...but dammit I love Sony IPs
if original Crash and Spyro dont make it in....man I really might not consider buying it....damn I hate being one of those guys...but Crash and Sypro made Playstation
PS1:
Crash
Spyro
Lara Croft
Cloud
Leon
Parappa
Sweet Tooth
Jin/Heihachi
Snake
Ape Escape character
Hot Shots character
PS2:
Jak
Ratchet
Sly
Dante
Kratos
Samanosuke
Ico
Sora
Auron
PS3:
Nathan Drake
Cole
Sackboy
Screwball Shoutouts:
Tomba, Disgae, Persona, Vib Ribbon, SSX, Tony Hawk, Timesplitters, thatgamecompany, Daniel Fortesque, Jehuty
If most of that list makes it im happy, but they NEED Crash and Spyro PS1 designs with a new coat of paint
I know that feeling, I need Crash too, I grew up with him, Spyro I didn't like as much.Ah I hate to do this and swear I will never do it again...but dammit I love Sony IPs

And that makes sense, but for the initial roster, I think its too much of a gamble for most publishers. And even Sony.

It's a party game. I'm not saying that in a negative manner, Melee is a fun MP game. Brawl is just a bad game.

Whats up with the line of thinking that Brawl is bad? Its fun to play, looks great, has an amazing soundtrack, and a really nice/diverse set of characters. Aside from the busted online, whats so bad about it?
I don't think Brawl is bad, I still really like it, but Melee is better. Brawl is a much slower game and it just doesn't "feel" as good as Melee does. Not sure how to describe it really, as I'm not a competitive player, but I just find Melee to be the more fun game.
i'm not going to post the neogaf gif but...I swear to god if the OT of this game turns into a huge argument about if Sony's characters are iconic enough for a crossover fighting game or not instead of how well the game plays ect.

Didn't Ed Boon say something about Scorpion about this a while ago or am I just crazy?

Those last 2 could fit as easily in to Smash Bros as they could in this Sony clone as they have a history with both Nintendo and Sony. Actually, wasn't Snake already in the last Smash Bros game?

It's not like all the characters in the Smash Bros. games are equally iconic. It's completely possible to take a lesser known character and make them more popular by including them in the roster. Surely King Dedede or whoever the fuck wasn't as well known as Mario or Samus. But in hindsight, all the Smash Bros. characters seem more iconic even if they weren't iconic to begin with.
I didn't know a lot of Smash characters and that honestly didn't bother me. After seeing them I would look up info about it and still thought they were pretty epic. Characters like Marth, Roy, Ike, Pit, Lucas, Falco, Ice Climbers, Wolf.
In fact, when I got the original game I didn't know who Samus, Captain Falcon, Ness, and Fox were lol
I've never played a Smash Bros. but like you I hadn't heard of many of the characters. I had an NES growing up. I subscribed to Nintendo Power. Yet I didn't know about these guys. The number of people who passionately obsess over every Nintendo franchise could not have been large enough to make Smash Bros. as popular as it is.
If a game is any good, it shouldn't be relying 100% on fan service and character recognition in the first place. I hope Sony takes a bold approach and really reaches back into their catalog. They need to take lesser known characters and make them interesting and fun to play with. They aren't going to get by purely on the "charm" of Cole McGrath.
