Any gun owners lurking...

Back from my 30 day time out. Might as well make my first post here.

While I was away I purchased 4 new guns...3 of which are I have and one of which is in the mail.

First up is a Mosin Nagant 91/30 dated 1942. Nothing special about it. Cost $100 Canuck bucks.

Next up is a Norinco HP9, which is an exact clone of the 870, but at a Chinese price. This is the 14" model. There is also a 12.5", but this was on special for $240.

And finally, a CSA VZ58 Carbine in .223. 11.5" barrel. Shoot be a fun little plinker. These are the closest thing we can get to an AK up here. AK's are classed prohibited.

My 7.5" Ar15 is in the mail. Hope to have it sometime next week.

Just a clarification on Canadian regs from the other page. Shotguns, lever guns, and I believe bolt actions can be any length and classed unrestricted as long as the length was that way from the factory. So yes, we can get really short shotguns and such with no extra provisions on the license.

Semi-auto however will be classed as a restricted firearm if the barrel length is under a certain amount. Example, you can get the Kriss SuperV with the long barrel and it is unrestricted, but the 5.5" version is restricted.

All that is required to get the SBRs is the restricted provision on your license. There is no extra fee or anything like that. Unfortunately, restricteds are limited to plinking at approved ranges and you need a permit to transport them.

Picked up my Ruger 10/22, then saw the Sons of Guns episode (Yeah I know they're overpriced and toolish on TV but they're actually pretty respectable) where they converted a 10/22 into a bullpup PS90 design. I think I'm gonna order that stock, its $229. Seems pretty tacticool to me.

VZ 58 is a better weapon anyway. Well, parts are less common, but it is a better platform with better ergonomics.

What 1911's would you put near the top in quality? Anyone have a Springfield Armory 1911 TRP?
Pretty tough question to answer since there are so many different brands of 1911s ranging from basic functional 1911s up to thousands of dollar custom jobs. I think most 1911s from all the major retailers are quality weapons. The Springfield TRP is no different. You really cant go with wrong with any 1911s from Kimber, Les Baer, Springfield, Colt, Wilson, Sig, etc. Tough to say who is the best. Lots of people love Kimber, but if you read gun forums you will find just as many people who feel they are overrated and not worth the extra money they cost. I think that can be said for pretty much every expensive semi custom 1911 brand. It just comes down to personal preference. Best bet is to read reviews and try to rent and shoot for yourself if possible.

I agree. Parts aren't too bad to find up here, either. I swear we must have as many VZs in every configuration as the Czechs do.

I never heard of any exploding glocks here. Glocks are and have been THE handgun for every policeman and the army here since almost 30 years.

Would it be really used by over 50 police squads, special forces and army soldiers worldwide if they are known to blow up in your hand?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0307719936/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Their were and Glock buried them in confidential settlements. Also early Glocks had a bad habit of becoming Glock 18's. It's discussed in length in the book (which isn't a hatchet job in anyway, but a really good book on the company and it's dominance in the market). I highly recommend it.

EDIT: Gah when I clicked on a link to the thread it took me to the first page. Sorry for the multi year old response. Still if it gets people to read the book, then it's good.

I'm looking to buy my first gun. Just got my permit to purchase in the mail and once I take those classes you have to take I'm going to get my concealed permit. Not that I'd every really use it but it would be nice to go buy a gun without having to get the permit to purchase renewed every year. The CCW is every 5 but anyway. I'm looking at Glocks because everyone says they are the best. I have two friends that are Glock nuts. Glock seems to be the Apple of the gun world from looking at prices. If I go with a used one is a ex law enforcement one a good idea? There are a bunch of G17's online for about $370. They are about 15 years old though. They have holster wear and that's about it. What is average for used one There aren't really any gun shops where I live. It's pretty much just pawn shops or Gander Mountain, Shceels, Cabelas around here. Any tips on what to look for? If they are so reliable is there any reason on spending $500 for a Glock as opposed to a used one for $350-$400?

Me personally I like to buy new and break the gun in myself. I love the feel of growing up with the gun. The GEN4 G17 is a good gun. I went with the Springfield XDm for my first one though.

Avoid the GEN4 it has ejection issues, GEN3 is cheaper and pretty much flawless other than being ugly.

If you are looking to concealed carry at all, then I wouldn't get a G17. They are pretty large. Go for a 19 or 26 if you really want a 9mm Glock. Glocks are great guns, but they aren't necessarily the absolute best. They are immensely popular and a great deal for the price, and arguably one of the toughest and most durable guns you can get, but there are other guns that are just as good. Anything from Sig, HK, Springfield, M&P are fairly comparable, and in some regards better depending on your own preference. I own a G19 but I personally don't really care for the grip and ergonomics of it nearly as much as my M&P or Sig. Hell I even like shooting my tiny Kahr more than the G19. It's still a great gun, but don't just automatically take what someone says at face value. They all have their advantages and drawbacks. Having said that, Glock is a great choice that's for sure.

Go to your local gun shop or range and handle as many different models as you can. Personally, I hate the way Glocks feel. The Springfield XDs are even worse.

If you're set on a tupperware pistol, the S&W M&P9 feels the least horrible. If you're a full-size man, get a 1911 and see why it has such a following.

From my understand that issue was blown out of proportion. I'd still go Gen4 for the grip enhancements and take my chance with the easily replaceable spring. But thats just me. I don't own any Glocks.

This. I have well over 2000 rnds through my gen4 using junk MFS 115gr surplus, steel cased garbage and have never had an issue. There was a problem with early gen4s but that is fixed. And if you have an early one, you can contact Glock for a replacement spring.

I'll take the full size man magazines of 13+1 in my xd45 over your meager 8+1 in your 1911 any day of the week. :P

Signing up for a Basic Pistol course with the local NRA chapter. Friend of mine is doing the same.

I live in NJ, so even owning a gun is an obnoxious process, and concealed carry for civilians = no. But I've never shot a "real" gun (just airsoft) so I figured, why not give it a shot? One more thing to check off the list of things to do before I die.

Now, out of curiosity, I have a basic question about gun shop etiquette and the cardinal rules of safety. All the variations of the rules I have seen talk about "don't point the gun at anything you wouldn't want to shoot, even after you safety-check it, the gun is always treated as loaded." So how do you examine a gun at say, a show or a gun shop, in a safe manner? Obviously you'll want to at least briefly look through the sites and aim to see how it feels (no?), how do you do this safely and without having the gun shop yell at you?

Generally if you're at the store and are looking at various weapons the gun shop will do the safety check in front of you. If you want to feel the weapon and look down the sites turn in the direction that no one is standing and either aim at the ground or the ceiling.

Some shops will also have a designated safe area, usually a spot on a wall or something.

I started the process for a Firearms ID and handgun purchase permit, just in case I enjoy the class. For $7, why not? Filled out the forms, called the local detective in charge of handling the applications and...was told that "something big went down today" and to call back tomorrow, lol. I can tell this is going to be a fun ride, based on the reports of people waiting months. Guess I should've thought about doing this when I lived in PA for 5 years...

Yet, some idiots always seem to find a way to sweep you or just point it at you...grrr.

Whelp, today I dropped a lot of money.

Ordered a Tavor TAR 21, a Kriss SuperV 5.5", a Famae SAF, and a Sig P226.

The wife is going to fucking kill me. Good thing I bought a new safe to put everything in lol.

I'll post pics as the stuff comes in.

The only proper response.

On another question anyone ever dealt with budsgunshop? I finally got an email that they have the Baby Desert Eagle 2 40s&w Steel (BE9413R) and I'm still waiting on my local shop to get it in. There price is also a lot cheaper than I think my store can do it for.

Buds Gun Shop is great - the actual store is about 20 minutes from where I live, so I've never had to have anything shipped to me though. That being said, every review I read on them says they are accurate in their descriptions and they ship super fast. I bought a Smith and Wesson M&P22 from them about a year ago and couldn't be happier.

That's good to hear if I can't find the weapon I want Saturday at this gun show I'll try buds.

These will be the last guns I buy for about 2 years until school is done...well outside of the occasional milsurp here and there. But nothing expensive.

Even better is when you get the people at the range that manage to sweep the whole line with a weapon in battery. Most recently it was an older couple that was trying to sort out the laser on their LCP, and managed to do that 3-4 times in the span of an hour, once during a cold line.

Good times, to be sure.

My 7.5" AR-15 showed up today.

What upper and lower receiver are those? They look awesome, I love billet lowers.
Colt Gold Cup Trophy. Anything Else is an imitation

See that magazine in there? Wilson Combat. I don't like the look of their guns, but ifyou are after the best money can buy without going custom, it would probably be Wilson.

Les Baer or Wilson Combat, do it!
Or Baer. Love some Baer Monolith.

Just recently started the process of getting my first gun here in NJ and its such a hassle.

First I had to call up my local pd to set up the finger prints. Officer in charge was on vacation for a week.

1 week later I call back and he gives me a date for the following week.

The following week I go in turn in my application for a firearms licesnce and handgun permit. Fill out another form and now am given a sheet to go online and set up my fingerprint date. I go home pay the $52 and get to choose a date at another location, the closest one is 5 miles, not a big deal I have a car but still. Anyway the soonest available date is another week later and its in the afternoon, I work overnights so it's during my sleep schedule.

Fast forward to yesterday I get home from work and go right to bed. Wake up with a half our before the appointment and head onto the highway. At this point I realize its the start of rush hour so I get nervous, but I make it there with a minute to spare. Walk in and realize in my sleep deprived state I forgot my form I was supposed to bring. Guy is cool says as long as I can make it within the next two hours in solid. Take the local way back home only to run into construction at almost every turn. Get to my place grab the form, still the early stages of rush hour so only 30min of traffic, so I got the prints done finally.

Get home and a text from one of my references telling me they have to fill out a form about me and get it notarized. Which makes me feel like an ass cause i didn't know i was going to be putting them through legwork.

And now i get to wait to get my license a wait i have heard is between 1 and 6 months. WTF NJ
