My friend said to me he thought The Avengers isn't a BETTER movie than The Dark Knight, but it's definitely more FUN.

I'll be going today or tomorrow.

I'm talking about the people who say TDK isn't a superhero/comic book movie because it's not "fun".

I have been one of the people saying that Avengers will be more "fun" than any Batman movie, but I have yet to see anyone saying that Batman/TDK stuff is not a superhero movie because it is not "fun."

You will also find many on GAF who share the opposite sentiment and when Rises comes out, I can guarantee you there will be 3 factions.

Truth.

I'm talking about the people who say TDK isn't a superhero/comic book movie because it's not "fun".

Who said that?

It's most definitely a superhero movie. I was saying there's different ways of making a superhero movie. Dark Knight goes the 'complex, serious' route, Avengers is a more fun, actiony one. Each is a great suit for their respective base as well.

And as we know, you can also do Batman in a 'fun' way also.

There could be more actually:

BB > TDK > TDKR
BB > TDKR > TDK
TDK > BB > TDKR
TDK > TDKR > BB
TDKR > BB > TDK
TDKR > TDK > BB

Gets even messier if you include ties as possibilities!

Just came back from seeing this movie, and it is awesome, it seriously keeps you entertained the whole time, even on the slow parts which are few.

I must say that between The Dark Knight and Avengers, i would rather watch the Avengers for the above reason, The Dark Knight is a terrific movie, but Avengers has the whole package.

Also, what are the possibilities of Deadpool making it for the next movie? he is my 2nd favorite marvel hero after Iron Man.

I've soured a little on Dark Knight.

Mood, Joker, complex, deep storyline, but some chaotic plot devices, and sometimes just plain too serious.

I mean, sure, amazing film, but is it 'fun'?

I'm one of the few who prefers Burton's Batman films to Nolan's. I just find Nolan's to be a bit preachy and I'm not fond of the realistic angle he tries to pull with the characters and the world.

But TDK isn't a good crime movie.

I mean, If WANTING to be like Heat is good enough, then sure. But WANTING is very different than BEING.

A different quality. No one has accused it of being Oscar worthy except for effects. It is being acclaimed for just being a big, fun, entertaining spectacle.

And I cannot wait.
I agree and I can't wait to see it either.

What the hell is going on? I'm hearing people comparing this to TDK in terms of quality. Is such a thing even possible?
Myself I don't mind the Nolan's batman movies, I don't even think they are the best comic book movies or even best batman movies but It sounds like Avengers is great fun for a comic book movie.

I feel the same way as you about prefering Burton's Batman films to Nolan's.

The only thing stopping this movie from being good for me
was that you dont see any civilians actually die, so the whole invasion was kind of tame

Better than The Dark Knight? It wasn't even in the same league, for me.

It was a fun film, for sure. But several issues, like the hammy, sometimes cringe-inducing dialogue, the ridiculous plot (what on earth was loki's "plan" about? I can't actually remember the villain following such an obviously contrived and unrealistic strategy in ANY film), and the strange pacing (they were still getting their shit together with 20 minutes to go, then suddenly in the blink of an eye the aliens appear, and disappear); prevent the film from being anything other than a competent run of the mill romp, imo.

As I said, I can't recall when was the last time I had so much fun at the movies. I loved pretty much the entire thing and I would gladly rank it with Iron Man as the best super-hero movie based on a Marvel franchise. I still believe that Nolan's Batman movies are still better, but I'll be damned if The Avengers is not a heck of a lot more fun.

This is the best popcorn flick I've ever seen.

I had some serious doubts considering Whedon's panaché, but I swear to God I will worship his bald noggin from now on.

Random observations (light on spoilers for those who dare):

-The history felt a bit thin, but I always thought that The Avengers is just a vehicle to show superheroes pulling endless superheroics and occasionally beating the shit out of themselves. Mission goddamned accomplished.

-I actually liked ScarJo and Renner! Black Widow and Hawckeye are kind of supporting characters in the comic, so they did more than fine with the time they were given. Mad props to Whedon for giving them something significant to do, any other director/writer would have discarded them easily.

-ScarJo was fine, but I still find a bit silly that world class athlete and superspy Natasha Romanov could be so... turgent. I appreciate the ass, tho.

-Renner was... good? I kind of want a Hawkeye movie now.

-The Avengers is not a stellar movie when it comes to cinematography, but it definitely didn't look like a TV flick with a colossal budget either. Good marks all around.

-Tons of witty lines exceedingly well delivered by everyone. I only cringed at the techno-babble (you know that part).

-Tony Stark was awesome, Thor was appropriately douchy and Cap was Cap. Some people complained about Rogers being a bit of a tight asshole, but that is Cap for you.

-Hulk STEALS the movie. This is seriously the best Hulk movie to date. I laughed HARD when he took Loki and beat the everliving shit out of him. Similar ROFLS were had when he unceremoniously punched Thor just cuz.

-One thing I didn't like was how Hulk went from savage destruction machine to Avenger. It felt a bit Deus Ex-Machina-ish. Oh well.

-Another con: I thought the chi-tauri escaped Gears of War for a good while. Those designs were a bit... eh. Suitable cannon fodder anyway.

-I found that the BADASS helicarrier was a bit out there for most non comic book readers. Giving SHIELD a bit of development couldn't hurt (if any, just explain that Stark helped with the design).

-Action sequences were EXCELLENT. They were long but not tiresome. Haters = owned.

-The movie did not feel too long nor had boring moments, which is kind of amazing given its actual length. I think Whedon did an excellent work giving every character something meaningful to do while using the slower moments as ramps for the next action sequence.

I couldn't end this post without mentioning that The Avengers had the best crowd I've ever seen in a movie theater hands down. Last week I complained about how I hated the public during The Hunger Games, but that was not the case for The Avengers.

I was expecting the worse crowd ever going by the reactions at the trailers before the movie (the theater was filled to the brim, also) but as soon as the cast was introduced everyone began to nerd out hardcore. We were a mixed crowd made of families with small children, teenagers and people pushing their 40s, but every single one of us cheered and laughed as one. Hulk moments were particularly awesome, with the whole cinema erupting in laughs. Kids LOVED the movie and everyone of us had a grand time. The grins at the end of the film were monumental. So goddamned satisfying.

I can't wait for the Blu-ray.

Batman Begins > Dark Knight

You will find many on GAF that share that sentiment.

ITT we pretend like TDK isn't generally considered to be the better film.

On topic,

Just bought my Avengers tickets. My local Imax theater just started offering reserved seating. No more lining up two to three hours in advance, and still not being guaranteed a decent seat.

Saw this last night. Had a great time. There was some great action sequences but I didn't expect the film to be as funny as it was. Certainly the most memorable moments were the ones that caused the entire cinema to laugh hard and long. Hated the 3D, which I had to watch as my friends all wanted to see it that way. I think I will enjoy this more on bluray, for which I will be there on day 1.

Yeah, I would suggest people to skip the 3D version at all costs.

I saw it in 2D, but I can't see how 3D could benefit the film barring a very particular sequence
(Ironman blasting through a column of descending chi-tauris)
. It is spectacular and boombastic, but it doesn't have a lot of "in your face" moments and I'd rather enjoy its colourful nature intact. 2D all the way.

As a side note, I would like to mention that my buddy's girlfriend (who is in no way a geekette) enjoyed the movie a lot. She was also gasping something fierce whenever Thor and Caps showed up, but I think I even squirmed a little bit. I mean, damn.

So the international boxoffice for the Avengers should be well over 100M this weekend. The movie could have close to 200M in the bank before it even opens in North America. I wonder if early international releases will eventually be standard procedure in the near future.

Anyhow, I am excited to see how close the Avengers can get to a record opening next weekend. A few Gaffers were predicting box office runs under 250M not too long ago. One poster even claimed this movie would make less than 120M total domestically. Those posts will be fun to dig up.

I figured 650-700M worldwide, which is also going to be way under the actual WW gross.

Just chiming in to say Epix01 is showing Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America back-to-back-to-back from 3:45PM to 10:15PM in HD, commercial-free. Just found out about it today, Dish Network is having a free preview today of the channel (380). This is perfect for me because I have yet to see these three films (seen both Hulks and the first Iron Man though) and it will be a great build up to seeing The Avengers next week. I'm sure for everyone else it could be a great refresher. :)

Now backing away slowly to avoid any potential spoilers. :p

True. 3D does not add shit this movie.

Considering that Fox owns the rights to the mutant characters, close to zero chance of this happening.

Although the X-Men and Spider-man film franchises were instrumental in their recovery from near bankruptcy at the end of the 90s, Marvel must really regret the foolish licensing deals they made with Fox and Sony at this point.

Can the studios not decide to cooperate? Universal distributed TIH, right? What's stopping Sony from signing some sort of cross-over deal for Spider-Man, for example? I realize that the common missing element would be that Marvel wasn't actually producing the film, but would that really defeat the possibility of greatly increased revenue?

I could see something like this happening, particularly if Amazing Spider-Man disappoints financially. Seems like Webb's universe would fit in with everything else Marvel's been building since 2008.

This is so fucking stupid. All my cinemas are only showing it in 3D.

Watched it last night (another theater had a showing) and god damn was that everything I hoped it would be. Really, really great.

I love the very end shot,
zooming out from the stark tower and showing all that's left of the title is the familiar "A" of the Avengers logo, really awesome ending and prelude in some ways.
I really felt like everyone got their fare share in the movie, if not in screen-time than certainly in story role importance and responsibility. It was all a LOT more humorous than I expected, I loved the banter.

Each and every one of them were badasses at times, even Fury, along with Cap, Black Widow and Hawkeye. Some great scenes all around, and Hulk really did bring something that none of them could have on their own. Though anyone else feel like he (Hulk) was a bit too ape like in his motions/walking stances? Not really noticeable or a big deal, just something that differs from the previous Hulks a bit.

Oh and anyone else notice how Hawkeye
being evil/brainwashed for first half of the movie is sort of a nod to his 'criminal' past in the comics?
Maybe not, but that's what I thought of tbh.

I was really glad to see Captain America leading in that one scene, giving orders. I wish there was more of that though, but it was a fair share of heroics and leadership.
lol at the cops scene

Another thing I was REALLY happy to see was the portrayal of Fury, he really isn't one dimensional, which I think was executed pretty well and a good tribute to who he is in the comics.
Him taking saying the Cap cards were in Coulsons pocket when he died, for example, is a pretty fucked up thing to do all around
.. but it got what needed to be done, done. It's what Fury does best.

In fact,
I wouldn't put it past him to have known all along that such an event was going to happen by putting the tesseract on the map, but was preemptively 'defending' the earth by showing that they have guardians (avengers) so future forces wouldn't fuck with them again. That's how forward thinking unsavory Fury is in the comics, at least.
Either way, I enjoyed Fury and I wouldn't mind having a SHIELD movie eventually.

I especially enjoyed the civilian reactions we saw from TV stations like CNN and the like, near the end. I would've hated if they brushed over the fact that something catastrophic had just happened (ala Transformers).
Cap shield tattoos and Stark goatees :lol

Just checked my local theaters for Friday showtimes.....all ponly 3D.

I hope this isnt right and they just havent listed all the times yet.

I want this movie in my veins so bad, but all that's on offer is the 3D-version and my eyes can't cope with non-Cameron-3D.

Same here - I'm figuring they want to fill those expensive 3D seats before offering 2D. Will keep checking until Thursday, by then I'll be forced to decide.

It is estimated to make $178.4 million dollars in overseas grosses, and that is only the first five days. That is ridiculous. And it has yet to open in Russia, China, and Japan.

Huge start so far.

Cinemas here in Austria are PACKED. Everyone and their friends wants to see the movie. Constantly sold out everywhere.

Saw the movie last Friday night, IT WAS AMAZING.

I went first with low expectations because I didnt hear to much about the movie (apart from it being made) before a friend told us this week to go and watch it the first day.
I was telling to some other friends if they wanted to come, and they were saying the same as me, no one knew if it was going to be good, in fact people where rather pessimist. We were buying some things that afternoon while we were talking about watching the movie, got my iphone out and entered rotten tomatoes thinking we will see something like 57% or some shit like that...
96%
WTF?
The biggest cinema here (a kinepolis) had all the tickets sold out, and we also hear some people at a comic store that afternoon that were geeking about the movie.
While we were eating that night one friends send us a message about having watch it that afternoon and saying ti was godly.
Hype surrounded all my firends then and went to see the movie with high expectations.
It delivered.

The cinema we went, being usually good, was not really that good that night. It was full to the brim (that was not bad, but it helped to have the next things), it smelled really bad (nerd sweat) and it was really hot because we are on a bad economic crisis and the cinema fuckers didnt want to put the air conditioner. Ah yes, the 2D version was not digital and it had some sounds problems (the voices sometimes where too fucking low).

That probably helped that maybe the slow start was not that great for some of my friends, but the rest of the movie just was fantastic non stop (apart of two of them that were drunk and went to sleep and and the girlfriend of a firend in the group thats the most hipster person ive seen on the planet that said it sucked monkey balls, fuck her).
Tony Stark and Banner were the fucking best, and it has the best final super hero scene of any super hero movie. In summary, it was FUN.
And even if it was too hot and smelled bad, the cheers and applause of the people in the key scenes was fantastic.

It seems that this movie is going to have a great run becuase cinemas here (Spain) are packed with nearly all the tickets sold out usually.
