I'm waiting for the GAF topic to be made.

"Giant Bomb Editor in "faggot" outburst"

Edit: Oh God, people are seriously saying he might be fired here too? Lord...
That's what im saying, as if they will fire the co-founder of GB over a slip of the tongue.

Now if he strutting out on stream with a god hates faggots shirt on going on how gay people are going to burn in hell that is completely different.

Yeah, Ryan will be fine. He made a dumb comment in the heat of the moment then apologized immediately afterward. Like someone else said, he may have to do some HR stuff but they aren't gonna fire him.

All has to do with context. Ryan calling Siri a bitch? Sort of stupid by him, sure, but the word is a negative slur used against mostly females and he used it to refer to software that speaks with a woman's voice. Vinny's "cunt" doesn't even compare in that context because he was literally using it to refer to vaginas.

Ryan using "fucking faggot" to refer to a tentacle monster, in that case the slur has nothing to do with what he's trying to insult. He's using some implied negative connections to the insult to bring the monster down. Of course he was really mad and frustrated when he said it - not that homophobic slurs being what come out when he gets really mad somehow reflects well on his character. I don't think there's a double standard for people getting upset about this slur and not the others, though. Neither do I think people are noting this on GAF because GAF traditionally has stronger norms about those kinds of slurs than others.

He did apologise a lot in different ways imemdiately afterwards and he's probably going to get a lot of shit about it from both fans and maybe CBSi, so this'll probably be evened out in the end anyway. If any parts of this post don't make any sense whatsoever it's because I stayed up until three in the morning watching this damn lantern run.

I think faggot is used a lot more as a general insult in society than a lot of people on GAF would like to admit. I think it's admirable that GAF is so strictly against homophobia, but that doesn't reflect society at large. In many contexts it's just another insult that has no homophobic connotations behind it, like the way Ryan used it.

To be honest you have to be an idiot to think this was anything other than Ryan just pulling a random swear word from his vocabulary and it just happened to be one that was loaded. Unfortunate, but no way a reflection of his character as a homophobe or anything.

And anyone here will know I'm not the biggest Ryan fan.

I agree with this sentiment.

Still doesn't make it OK to use it as an insult. At least he apologised.

Also, gotta say, this lantern run is pretty awesome overall.

This is clearly a serious offense. Only a public beheading will suffice at bringing this vile monster to justice.

The real dilemma is whether they inform HR about the slip of the tongue, or hope for the best and deal with the consequences of HR finding out on its own.

Of course it's not OK to say it, but it's just a reality. In the real world you hear the word a lot more than you do on GAF and it's understandable that in a situation like that someone might say it by mistake.

He apologised and it was clearly sincere so I think that should be that.

Yeah, let's talk about Will's clear attempts to sabotage the Run.

The only genuinely unfortunate repercussion that can come of this is Giant Bomb becoming more guarded from here on. They've now rocked the boat once and CBSi can't be seen to have one rule for GB and another for everyone else (even if the audience knows what to expect from the crew).

I would hate it their live streams become more reserved due to this but I guess we'll see.

This is the fucking truth right here. Lets not make a big deal out of it, he fucked up and realized it immediately.

I doubt it. 4 years of streaming and this is the first time anything like this has happened.

What's Giant Bomb's forum policy on saying "faggot"? The general FAQ thread says you may swear in any way you want as long as you don't belittle anyone but I have no clue how that applies here.

I mean, it's hypocritical of him if he part-runs a site that has to abide by rules that he, making content for it, does not. The personality he takes on in videos, be that his real one or as fake as it may be for whatever purposes, represents the site. Public figures do have to abide by slightly higher standards than random people on the street.

EDIT: And I still stand by the whole he'll get shit for it so it's fine idea I had earlier, so don't take this post as some sort of future boycot of GB at all.

I dunno, but I think you're reading too much into it. He just said the word. He didn't say it to anyone in the room with him or anything. It was a slip up and he apologised. It's not hypocritical for that reason.

If he regularly called people faggots and niggers, then he'd be a hypocrite, as well as a terrible person.

There's no place for anti-gay language in this culture anymore, but I appreciated the fact he apologized immediately. Sounded like an instance where he just threw out a random word and that was what came up.

Wait... Seriously?! Let it go and quit being a baby. I swear, some of you sound like soccer moms gathered around the coffee table discussing Oprah.

It comes to something when I'm one of the biggest Ryan defenders in this thread!

2:30am, time for bed. Good show. I expect 10+ pages of "omg Ryan is a homophobe" debates this weekend...

Honestly, I'm pretty sure it's virtually a consensus in this thread that it was an unfortunate slip and his apology was sincere. I don't think there's been a whole lot of Ryan is a homophobe posts.

Exactly. It's more people worried about how CBSi will react. And a lot of that is probably based on Brad's reaction.

maybe we should just shut up about the whole thing since everything's been said and continuing the conversation will hurt giantbomb more than anything. Even if it's just people making up strawmen and in general supportive of Giantbomb.

Hey! Patrick wrote a Worth Reading! That's A Thing!

You fucking say random shit sometimes when you're in a heightened state like that. He had the misfortune of it being live streamed. The end.

I think I'm more upset about Brad's very genuine seeming saltiness over the game than Ryan dropping the real f-bomb. Ryan was really apologizing after he said it and, I dunno, that word gets said a lot more than a lot of people seem to think. Then again, my view is probably skewed a little since two of my best friends are a gay couple who say it a lot, haha. People say awful words when they're around people they know because there's a comfortable sense of irony, and it's pretty easy to forget you're in public or being filmed (or livestreamed, in this case).

Still, it's not a nice word, and I'm glad Ryan understands that. They's all good people at GB.

I hate the language policing and false outrage that so many people are adopting. Are people going to say shitty things? Yes. Rather than letting WORDS have such an affect on you, why not try and ignore it? It reminds me of the brainwashed children in 1984 when they saw an adult doing something they weren't supposed to.

We live in a world where stupid people say stupid things. Why allow that to have such impact? And more importantly, why allow it to turn into this game of who can gasp the loudest and shake their finger in the air the highest.

I watched a video of a man in India getting hit by a bus the other day. His guts were spilled all over the pavement and he was still alive. How has a single word from the english language taken top billing over some of the stuff that happens in the world?

Lets just grow up and quit acting like a species with perpetually hurt feelings.

EDIT: The 'lets just shut up about it' sentiment above wasn't posted when I started this. Now who's the soap box shouting ass? ;)
