A huge success and one that I would never, EVER have seen coming. seriously if someone would have guessed that Avengers would make $200m in it's first three days I'd have dismissed them out of hand.

Yup. It has two numbers to overtake. I think TDKR will open huge, but overall will still be lower domestic total than Dark Knight. As many have said, it does not have the elephant in the room about Ledger's death to boost it.

Agreed, and BATTLESHIP is going to get steamrolled by Avengers- and Hard. That film has a massive marketing budget and NO ONE hyped to see it.
There was already massive amounts of hype for TDK by this time before release. You can't say that Ledgers death had no impact on the interest for most moviegoers.

The problem with this is that people would have to actually be invested in Batman's story for it to be that type of event. As fantastic as The Dark Knight was, Batman was the least interesting part of that film and he's the big component tying the franchise together.
I loved TDK for the Dent/Gordon storyline and thought Ledger's unique portrayal of the Joker was inspired. It stands well on its own but there is no over-arcing story at work here besides the tacked on "Batman is now wanted for murder" stuff that was added on at the end of TDK.
No doubt audiences are going to be checking this out but there really is no Lord of the Rings style story at play here.

I respect WB for not forcing Nolans hand in the matter. It is buckets of free money they've turned down for the quality of the experience. As amazing as Avengers was, the 3D was absolutely worthless.
Sure don't mind the avatar bet. I'm not hating on the Avengers one bit. I actually am a big fan and saw it on the 4/16 selected screenings and saw it again this weekend. We the fans are the ones who are winning since we get these 2 films in the span on 2 ffreakiin months. I really do believe DKR will get that number though. Even possible a $100 million on OPENING DAY

I'm saying people are forgetting what the hype for TDK was like back in May 2008. People were hyped but never thought it would break opening weekend records or even be the #1 movie of the year at that point.
Now people are not invested in Batman's story? Come on now. The second TDK ended, all the speculation went to a sequel of how Batman would redeem himself.

I'm glad the Avenger's is doing well so far. I just hope this brings more recognition to Enver Gjokaj. He's seriously an amazing character actor. (You'd need to watch both seasons of Dollhouse just to see how he nails Topher like Fran Kranz does Topher himself)

I respectfully disagree on the matter. Batman Begins was a pretty humanising look into the Bruce Wayne/Batman archetype. And this one is modelled very closely on that (however i agree he was under-utilised in TDK).
The interesting dynamic at play here is that people genuinely don't know if Batman is going to live or die at the end of this film. The fact that Nolan is even entertaining that notion is enough to pique an interest in this film and get butts on seats. how many comic-book movie arcs have definitive closure?
Im thinking that the dark knight rises will also be a monster hit. But I echo what others said: It doesn't have the 3D premiums/cheat that the avengers had. TDKR will probably make about 180 million. Still a crazy amount. And it's still prob gonna be a great film. What I'm interested is in the legs for the Avengers. How it will fare through these next few weeks
Even right before opening day the predictions were nowhere close to the 158m it ended up grossing.
You never know, really. I have little doubt that TDKR will break TDK's opening weekend but the Avengers's is an uphill battle.

I still think TDKR can do 180-190 million OW. With summer weekdays, it could still match the Avengers in total domestically.

I agree with you on Begins. Batman was a well established character and I was absolutely enthralled with his story. I think they lost a lot of that with TDK though. I think Nolan does have a lot to play with when it comes to the Batman live or die stuff at the end of TDKR.
But it was his story that had people interested in a sequel.

Thats true. Whedon's movie are about fun and entertainment with some laughs. Nolan is all about messing with the audience viewer with a multilayered storyline.

Seconded. Ledger and his Joker was the best thing about TDK, and every news outlet from Good morning america to Oprah were running stories on it for months leading up to the film.
TDKR doesn't have that benefit- and to make things worse, the months leading up to it will be full of talk about how great Avengers *IS*, and how it's smashing/has smashed box office records, and not so much about how TDKR *will be*.
I like how Avengers spiced up the BO wars.
Many of us predicted cray records for TDKR till last week. Now, the whole situation has flipped over itself, and it seems like Avengers might be the biggest film of the summer.
Still, it will be interesting when TDKR comes out and see how it does. fun times we live in, BO folks!

I was in total agreement until the $100 million opening day. It is tough to predict what TDKR will do. It has the hype train of being the finale to a well received series, and coming off one of the most loved and successful blockbusters of the last decade. It is lacking some of the mystery and hype around the villain's performance like Heath Ledger had though. That is the wildcard.
Okay, I will make that bet with you. I bet that TDKR does not make $100 Million in a single day.

TDKR will break DH2 $169 million and everyone thought that would be enough since no other film in 2012 was going to top that. I thought even if The Avengers broke $169M it would be in the mid $170's and TDKR would still top it. However $200M+ makes the road much tougher. I won't count TDKR out.

Exactly, The box office is completely blowing my mind this year. It's not out of the realm of possibility for TDKR to beat this.
What Avengers has going for it is the spectacle of all these heroes from different films - united. Something that hasn't been done before.

I see Avengers getting around 380-450 million total domestic while TDKR getting between 450-500 million.
Overall I think Avengers will make around 1.4 Billion due to overseas while TDKR will be around 1.2 Billion
It probably won't but it will be in the ballpark. I'd take the bet for the $215-225 though

at least let him try and way to be unfair, this sort of comic book movies is whedons strength. he lives and dies for this shit. nolan on the other hand made batman a non super hero flick, a very good one at that.
