lol what?
I don't know, due to Ledger's death and his supposedly amazing performance TDK had a hype train going for over half a year before it's release.
This time, well, not even close.
lol what?
TDKR will need to be post converted to 3D to reach that total.
Big deal. Men in Black 3 is going to blow it out of the water!
True, no 3D surcharge, but ticket prices nowadays are usually around $14 for Digital showings(basically all theaters) and there are enough LieMAX's and IMAX's so screens shouldn't be the problem. The same crowd who saw Avengers will probably check it out, plus DKR has the summer going for it. No school, no Finals etc... I stay behind that $215-225 estimate. Bookmarked.
lol, before trying to beat the Avengers OW, it need to beat HP7.5 first.
i saw this movie 2 times already.
it absolutely deserves it. disney does not.
i wish somebody else bought marvel. god do i hate disney.
At least point it feels like MIB3 will be lucky to make $200m in it's ENTIRE US run at the box office.
People keep saying this here, yet at this time in 2008 most people here were predicting TDK would be 2nd to Indiana Jones 4 and possibly even 3rd to Iron Man after that surprising run.
We are 2 1/2 months from release, and the TV spots haven't even begun.
If WB angle TDKR as a Return-of-the-king type end of an era event, they will definitely do fucking gangbusters. As it stands right now, the marketing's been a bit melodramatic and not very exciting. Its hard to call right now.
I don't care if TDKR or Avengers do better, just that quality comic cinema is getting the attention it deserves
If no shitty 3D conversion means TDKR doesn't break any records, I'm 100% fine with that. I'm sure WB isn't, but I don't give a shit about their financial success.
So what kind of avatar and name will you be given if it does not do those numbers? It's not like you appear like a viral marketer for TDKR already. Maybe changing your avatar to Captain America from that shitty early 90s movie if you lose this.
Yup. It has two numbers to overtake. I think TDKR will open huge, but overall will still be lower domestic total than Dark Knight. As many have said, it does not have the elephant in the room about Ledger's death to boost it.
Probably not, despite the fact Avengers's OW will probably be closer to 205 million OW when it's all said and done, that might not even top TDK OW admissions if you factor in the extra IMAX and 3D revenue.
For TDKR to actually beat the Avengers it would have to smash opening weekend admissions by 10-15% without 3D.
There was already massive amounts of hype for TDK by this time before release. You can't say that Ledgers death had no impact on the interest for most moviegoers.
The problem with this is that people would have to actually be invested in Batman's story for it to be that type of event. As fantastic as The Dark Knight was, Batman was the least interesting part of that film and he's the big component tying the franchise together.
I loved TDK for the Dent/Gordon storyline and thought Ledger's unique portrayal of the Joker was inspired. It stands well on its own but there is no over-arcing story at work here besides the tacked on "Batman is now wanted for murder" stuff that was added on at the end of TDK.
No doubt audiences are going to be checking this out but there really is no Lord of the Rings style story at play here.
You crazy son of a bitch you did it.
Now people are not invested in Batman's story? Come on now. The second TDK ended, all the speculation went to a sequel of how Batman would redeem himself.
End of Days man, End of Days Man
Aren't these 2 signs of the Apocalypse?
Someone tell Nolan and WB to do the fastest and worst post 3D conversion of all-time.

And there's already massive amounts of hype for TDKR by this time before release. And I never said Ledger's death had no impact, where did you get that?
I'm saying people are forgetting what the hype for TDK was like back in May 2008. People were hyped but never thought it would break opening weekend records or even be the #1 movie of the year at that point.
Too bad we don't get admission numbers for America, that'd be interesting to see.
Nolan don't give a shit about money. He wants to make his own movies. Guy is his own man. Joss will never have the pull (or balls) Nolan has.
I respectfully disagree on the matter. Batman Begins was a pretty humanising look into the Bruce Wayne/Batman archetype. And this one is modelled very closely on that (however i agree he was under-utilised in TDK).
The interesting dynamic at play here is that people genuinely don't know if Batman is going to live or die at the end of this film. The fact that Nolan is even entertaining that notion is enough to pique an interest in this film and get butts on seats. how many comic-book movie arcs have definitive closure?
I stand by my statement. I don't think it was Batman's story that people came out of TDK loving.

Avatar quote.

Sure don't mind the avatar bet. I'm not hating on the Avengers one bit. I actually am a big fan and saw it on the 4/16 selected screenings and saw it again this weekend. We the fans are the ones who are winning since we get these 2 films in the span on 2 ffreakiin months. I really do believe DKR will get that number though. Even possible a $100 million on OPENING DAY
Do you think he has carte Blanche to make an inception of his own now with his pick of Oscar nominees?Even when Joss is a huge success, people find a way to twist it.
lol
Nolan: I have more pull!
Whedon: I have a Hulk!
But it was his story that had people interested in a sequel.
At this point I'm doubting that TDKR will be able to take the opening weekend record, but you never know. Both the Hunger Games and the Avengers opened WAY higher than I expected them to, so who knows?

lol
DM is exactly on the mark here. It wasn't until a couple weeks before release that the possibility of it breaking the OW record was even being tossed around.People keep saying this here, yet at this time in 2008 most people here were predicting TDK would be 2nd to Indiana Jones 4 and possibly even 3rd to Iron Man after that surprising run.

I was in total agreement until the $100 million opening day. It is tough to predict what TDKR will do. It has the hype train of being the finale to a well received series, and coming off one of the most loved and successful blockbusters of the last decade. It is lacking some of the mystery and hype around the villain's performance like Heath Ledger had though. That is the wildcard.
Okay, I will make that bet with you. I bet that TDKR does not make $100 in a single day.

Again he isn't the reason people went to see The Avengers. Call me when he makes an original IP released in the summer that grosses $292,576,195. It will never happen.

Oh please..... give me a freaking break. Next to noone thought this guy could deliver with this movie. Then he goes out and sets the opening record, and all of a sudden its "nothing" because its not a new IP.
