EGM: Final Fantasy Versus XIII a No Show at E3

Almost 1 CG video per 2 in-engine scenes. That's... absurd amounts of CG. Higher than XIII.

XIII-2, which was multiplat, had like 4 or 5 total.

Oh right... yeah, they said that somewhere too didn't they?

That's extremely good news... for when it actually comes out, I'm definitely happy with that!

It still beggars belief that this game was announced at the same E3 at which Nintendo properly unveiled the Wii, and yet it won't be out until the Wii's successor is out worldwide.

There's probably a whole book that could be written about the sheer mismanagement of this project, though I doubt we'll ever get the complete story.

All accounts seem to indicate that no meaningful amount of development took place until after XIII shipped.

So no show means no chance of it coming out anywhere this year? Do you think at this point they'd hold an entire event dedicated to just this game?

On the other hand, if its actually progressed and remains a PS3 exclusive, maybe Sony has it locked-off as a "surprise" reveal at its keynote.

Not likely, admittedly, but Sony does have a track-record for giving SE product spotlight time at its pressers.

Unless they intend to launch this without ever showing up to an E3 conference, it's not wholly implausible that the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 make it out the gate first as well.

Prediction: They'll give Hitman: Absolution a Sony conference showing.

I was talking to someone about that quite recently... the amount of KH3D promotion really pales compared to say... Sleeping Dogs. There was a time when KH was bigger than Final Fantasy in America... that time is now long over :(

How S-E fucked up their two biggest brands in one genration, surely must be a case of study.

Whoever came up with the idea for Fabula Nova Crystallis needs to be fired. It's just been one huge clusterfuck after another. They never should have announced three games at once.

What do they have to be worried about. As much as people want to complain and as much hate as this game gets the second something new is shown all this is forgotten until the next time. I gotta say S-E is really lucky to have the loyalty they have in this industry if this was dozens of other companies people would just give up.

I think at this point it is heading to the next systems or they have gutted and done a major overhaul on this title. That or they have just put it on the back burner to get other titles done but who knows.

Perhaps S-E Japan and S-E America hate each other like SCEA and SCEE do. Or Disney are still pissed about there being no Kingdom Hearts Wii that they're not shifting their weight in the collaboration anymore. Nah. S-E really are just that stupid.

So this game is officially a development hell joke, right? I think we can safely say that without being trollish.

Yes, the game may or may not be good when it arrives... But SIX YEARS since it was announced??

If Versus was a girl you met when she was 12, she'd be legal by now.

I can't think of too many games in development for over 6 years that were successfully completed and released. I can think of even less that turned out great. There's a reason it's called development hell.

Still, stranger things have happened, maybe they're busy retooling it as a next generation title, who knows.

The top staff from the Kingdom Hearts team has still been working on it almost the entire time though.

If you took 20-30 of the top staff at Nintendo and had them work almost exclusively on one game since 2006, even if they were the only 20-30 people dedicated to it, it would still be a huge waste of resources.

May not change anything, but the source of that story isn't truly EGM. It's a guy's blog named 8BitEnvy & he based it on the Square Enix list that only showed KH3D, Sleeping Dogs, etc.

I'm not sure if that totally dismisses the possibility of it making an appearance as it sounds more like a blogger reaching for attention & a story.

Everyone needs to calm down. I waited for Duke Nukem Forever and it finally came out, and the lengthly development process didn't affect the quality of the final product at all.
...
...
Ok perhaps it is time to panic

I wonder if Square Enix has a mandate for this game to be good. In light of the XIII and XIV disasters, maybe they see the necessity of the next big FF to be great, and restore trust in the brand.

But of course for most of its development, it was probably a big shiny thing that wasn't a good game (a la XIII), so they're polishing for years until it is... And the years pass.

So what comes first? The Last Guardian, Half Life 3, or FF Versus XIII?

Does anyone even care? Square seems to have killed the franchise this generation. They should work on either: 1. Something new and wonderful or 2. Fixing Final Fantasy, period. Not some offshoot of a main franchise release.

The problem is vXIII actually looks like a pretty decent game.

What's been the word on the status of the XIV PS3 port?

I'd imagine SE would want to use that to draw attention to the fact they've spent a ton of time and money recovering from its disastrous launch and rebuilding the project into something that judging by the OT is actually half-decent nowadays.

Point being, if its still coming out, they are definitely in the business of pushing a PS3 (console) exclusives. Same deal with a Vita-fied version of Type-0.

Seems to me that right now SE needs Sony support, which might explain the political manoeuvring behind the scenes that Nomura's comments about not being allowed to say anything about Versus yet hint at.

Its a weird situation really, I'd expect Sony not to waste time even stirring the Orbis pot this E3 because they still are trying to get Vita on its feet, and given PS3 is in probably the best shape its been in since launch, a heavy push on exclusive software might be what they have in mind.

You know when this game was announced pretty much nobody used Facebook or Youtube, there was no iPhone, etc.

Does anyone even care?
Do you just chose not to read? What kind of dumb question is this? Just look at this thread. Many posters commenting that they are disappointed that Versus XIII is a no show. Comments that they hope the game still makes it. Many threads on this same exact game that has so little actual media. A thread will be made about the slightest info as well. And you want to ask does anyone care?
Square seems to have killed the franchise this generation.
In your opinion sure.

They should work on either: 1. Something new and wonderful
Versus XIII seems to be new. It seems to be a very new direction for FF, in gameplay, atmosphere, and visual design. The idea that they should just drop it and make something "new and wonderful" is dumb. What would that be?

or 2. Fixing Final Fantasy, period.
Which is something Versus could easily do.....

Not some offshoot of a main franchise release.
I really don't think ant FF spin-off has had the development time, resource, creative talent, and overall seemingly production quality of Versus XIII. Why you want to call it in off-shoot makes no sense. Just kind of makes you sound a bit nu-informed.

They're probably changing things little by little and generally putting so very little effort into the development of the game that it practically doesn't exist.

Versus XIII is an illusion jointly created by the fal'Cie and the Occuria to weave gaming history.

I just want this game to come out. I don't even want to play it.

I just want it to come out so he can make KH3.

Why doesn't the team who made BBS and KH3D get started on 3 and then Nomura and company can join them when they're done this piece of shit?

Then again, Osaka team would probably finish KH3 before Nomura could come and join them.

Either that or they're being too ambitious and constantly upping the scale of the game, making the dev time longer and longer, especially with a team that's so fragmented across a variety of titles. The teams finished with KH spinoff's can't join the main versus team because they constantly are made to start work on a new game instead.
You have ceo Wada to thank for that.

I wonder how you can keep the quality of a product that started development in 2006 and that will be released in 2013 (hopefully not later, lol) on a consistently high level. Or if that is even possible. You have to imagine that the development team has to constantly ditch and overhaul parts of the game to honor the fact that the industry has moved on in over half a decade (or a complete console generation, if you will). The standards for a AAA video game are not the same as they were when they begun designing the game; especially when you consider the reputation of the JRPG genre which drastically changed for the worse since 2006. The reception of both FFXIII and FFXIII-2 were very controversial (and quite disastrous for the latter). I guess Versus will be released into a more hostile or even indifferent environment than SE would like. Staying in development hell is maybe just a bad form of procrastination to avoid whatever will happen when Versus finally comes out. lol

You know when this game was announced pretty much nobody used Facebook or Youtube, there was no iPhone, etc.

I was in my Mid-20's when it was announced, now I'm in my early 30's

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!

Also: DA FAK is Twitter?, Tweet, I'll Tweet You Alright! #VaporsR'Us

Versus XIII seems to be new. It seems to be a very new direction for FF atmosphere.

This is bullshit. It's another title set in the future with armies invading. SE needs to stop with all this future sci-fi crap and go back to actual fantasy.

In other words remake FFIX and add more content specifically Amarant content because he's awesome.

Seems like Versus XIII will be Square's true "Final" Fantasy.

It's just crazy, they showed voiced cutscenes and gameplay footage years ago, what is taking so long?

Oh yeah. I wonder if the VAs are all finished.

Well, As long as TWEWY2 is announced, then I have to reason to be disappointed...

It is coming, right guys?
.

... Guys?

It'll come out in Japan and never get any info for release to the west because I dunno.

Seriously, why no Type-0 yet?

It's not the future. It's an extremely modern looking world, outright based off of real life locations like Japan and Italy. That's not too common in jrpgs.

And your only idea of fantasy is FFIX? That's just a game set in the past with armies invading. And there's even some sci-fi stuff going on towards the end.
