I swear this is the only movie I feel like I don't even bat an eyelash at paying full price for.

This. Going to watch it again next weekend. Oh and I want to see Mark Ruffalo get his Hulk Movie. Loved his take on Banner (and the big guy). Audience at my cinema cheered twice:

1. "Wanna know my secret? I never stop being angry!" + Punch!

2. Puny God

I still can't believe they let Hulk do that to Loki at the end of the movie. Loki is the main villain in the film, any other movie and people would probably think he deserve better ending than just being a punchline in a Hulk gag. but here it felt more like Bravo Marvel for doing that.

god this movie was sooo goood, literally had a nerdgasm at the last battle!!

thinking of watching this again in 2d

Just saw it and loved it. Favorite superhero movie next to The Dark Knight. Comedy was fantastic, especially the after the credits sandwich scene. RDJ is fantastic as always and Ruffalo made a fantastic hulk. I'd watch a movie with him.
It took me til the drive home to realize that was in reference to Starks shwarma line. Lol

GUYS WHAT THE FUCK. WHERE WAS SPIDERMAN?

I know he's not an Avenger but if my fucking home town was being leveled I'd poke my goofy head out of my web and have a look.

Not a single fuck was given.

So because I didn't see some of the movies that lead up to the Avengers movie, I went and watched Iron Man 2 just now (gonna catch Thor and Cap later) and it was surprisingly decent. Widow's hallway fight sequence in IM2 was actually nice and I liked how it was done overall compared to the combat sequences for her in Avengers. However, she looks so much better in Avengers than she does in IM2.

Iron Man 2 isn't a bad movie as most people say, it's just not a worthy sequel, that's all.

Yes, I agree about the bold (in fact, it was one of my impressions about the movie I said last night).
She looks much better with short hair.

Everyone stepped up their acting for this movie also, I thought. Including the ones who were nothing special in their separated movies. (Loki, Black Widow)

I think about the movie a bit differently. The real villain in Avengers is the threat posed by the group not working together. The first two acts in the movie deals with this threat and the third act is straight up payoff (i.e. that's why Hulk can ragdoll Loki).

that avengers dollar may convince sony to give him up for a movie and a 5% cut

Okay yeah, that was pretty good. Meh pacing, meh story, great action, great characters, some fantastic dialogue (mostly from Tony Stark)...I had a good time.

Also I have to say that internally I have to say to myself that Spider-Man and the X-Men don't exist in the movie version of the Avengers universe at all or else the complete lack of a mention of either of them even in passing otherwise is completely nonsensical. I mean, I know why, licencing issues and such, but I still get enough into the universe that it would bug me.

I'm so torn on this. On one hand, Ruffalo was AMAZING and I would definitely go see his hulk movie and probably love it. On the other hand I'm not sure if hulk really works well on his own. He can only be either a smart interesting guy OR an awesome superpowered monster, and I'm not sure if those two halves on their own are interesting enough to hold up a movie. One of the great things about Banner/ Hulk in Avengers was the way he interacted with the other characters. If they could get the balance right, it could work.

I was surprised at just how much humor there was throughout. It kept the tone light for an end of the world scenario and helped me bond with these people. Loki was a fantastic villian. Hiddleston was a great choice.

Im surprised everyone on the team got their moment to shine. Black Widow and Hawkeye had key roles in the plot and some nice character moments, neither of which i would have guessed looking at the team power level/public awareness wise.

One thing I was disappointed with was that they never explained how or why the Tesseract got to Earth. According to the Thor film one would assume the Asgardians brought it to Tonsberg Norway during their battle with the frost giants, before Red Skull captures it in WWII. I was hoping Thor would give an explanation aboard the Helicarrier, but there was nothing.

Ruffalo as Hulk was the highlight performance of this movie for me (Downey as Stark is close, but he's a known quantity). Ruffalo really sells the character who is so nice and nervous because he absolutely cannot risk getting upset. And the way they use the Hulk minimally and play it up as a massive deal was very effective.

Wait, there was stuff after the credits?! I watched to the end and all I got was "Distributed by Walt Disney Pictures"!

Bingo. That is why it worked so well. It is all about the build up to it, and it is just pure joy once it is unleashed.

Did it really matter? Seems like needless exposition in the making. It's on Earth. That's what matters.

I see your point. There is a diminishing returns aspect to the Hulk character, and certainly one of the reasons he stole the movie was because of his limited screen time as the Hulk coupled with how he interacted with the rest of the Avengers. All of which would be missing in a standalone movie. Unless of course, they went the comic book 'Nerd Hulk' route and had Banner in tenuous control when Hulked out.

I believe the official explanation (god knows where I read this) was that Howard Stark found it when he went looking for Steve's body.

That was a scene in Captain America. They showed Howard finding it.

What he's asking is why it was on Earth in the first place.

That happens after the Cap movie, he wants to know how it got to earth in the first place, since Red Skull found it in Norway.

Edit:
Nvm, too late.

Oooh, right, sorry. Yeah, no idea. It was in Odin's vault, so presumably he left it in Norway, for some reason? Bit of a plot hole, indeed.

What doesn't make sense exactly? The fact that it's on Earth doesn't make the plot confusing.

"Space cube is on earth. Why? Doesnt matter, it is a space cube."

Based on your post history in this thread, any negativity surrounding this movie is unfounded. Guess what? This movie wasnt perfect. It was big dumb fun. A much better directed/written Tranfsormers style blockbuster. But do not pretend that a lot of the plot wasnt contrived.

I agree with what someone else had mentioned - they should've had Tobey Maguire cast as a random extra staring up at everything before quickly jumping out of frame.

I thought it was implied that it was an asgardian artifact hidden here by their followers for centuries or whatnot.

Asgardians had been going back and forth for a long time, being mistaken for gods, so it's not out of the question that certain items had been left here- accidentally or possibly intentionally, to keep them out of harm's way.

Let's be fair though, it's not a plot hole in The Avengers, rather Captain America. By the time The Avengers begins, the cube has been on Earth for who knows how long. It had been owned by SHIELD for 60 years.

That's the way I see it, but it is strange that they would hide it on Earth, considering we know they have their own well guarded treasure vaults.

unless we're going to get an origin story of the cube, the question will just go on and on and on imo.

I mean, why was the cube in Odin's Vault? there's got to be a story about how Odin acquired the cube and so on.

Wtf are you going on about I've never said the movie was perfect.

Where the space cube came from is inconsequential to the plot of the Avengers. Do you want to know how it was created as well? Apparently it's bad to prefer a tight script that doesn't feel the need to explain everything to me when it isn't important.

Is it a plot hole when it isn't required to understand the plot of the film?
