Drafted AVR today ^_^ Nothing that great, but some of the new cards are cool. Best card I got is probably Dual Casting, which seems cool for a red/blue deck.

I got an Abundant Growth, is it just me or is that card really, really good? like, straight up better than Fertile Ground? Vanguard Shield is another one I like.

My favorite draws are the 3 Nephalia Smugglers I got. Card is beast. I was pairing it with Galvanic Alchemist to move soul bonds around, dodge attacks, destroy enchantments and untap creatures.

Yeah that's a good deck too but it's a different deck. You'd get rid of basically everything that costs more than 4 if you wanted to do that. It's no good just getting them to 10 life.

I'm not sure what you're saying here, can you elaborate? I'm not a great magic player.

Ok fair enough, in that case bump the sovereigns to 2 or 3 and cut the Eldrazi Conscription to 1.

So basically don't worry about it if they get rid of the Conscription? It's basically the only card I can't bring back or grab with Reborn Hope and Demand.

For your multi-color deck, all you need is 4 Prismatic Omens. Saw that in action today online. It gives all your lands the ability to produce any color mana, and it's cheap to cost! And cheap to buy in real moneys.

Ooh, that'd be really good for my Coalition Victory Scarecrows deck!

Doesn't provide mana acceleration. Land cards have the implicit text, "Tap: Add one W/U/B/R/G to your mana pool.", so you can't tap a land for that effect as well as the one granted by Abundant Growth. This is why Fertile Growth says "Whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana".

It's good for limited because it replaces itself and it fixes mana, but it is more or less unplayable for Constructed.

Oh, it just turns a land into any land. Still cool, you get to draw a card for 1.

Almost all the modern era "Problem cards" are cards that got changed late in the cycle and weren't playtested. Zac Hill apparently forgot to write "Flash" in the design file for Snapcaster, and Jace was changed at the last minute to allow fatesealing (although the free brainstorm was not one of the last minute changes.) Jitte, Tarmogoyf, and Skullclamp were also last minute changes. They've apparently put a "Late card being added? MAKE IT SUCK" rule to recent sets (As seen with the White mythic in Dark Ascension) which will hopefully help a bit with the ongoing issues.

GB and Haly I didn't know that you were MTG Nakama as well.

I haven't played Magic in so long. I will get back into the fray when this semester is over.

So what you're saying is they put in green last?

I see I see, it all makes sense now.

Jace didn't need playtesting for anybody to realize he was broken as fuck. Brainstorm and fateseal on a stick? You'd have to be completely unfamiliar with magic to think that wasn't a terribly overpowered card.

Wait; so Snapcaster snuck by because they didn't play test him with Flash? Ha! That'd be funny if he wasn't the single reason I hate Blue right now. I can live with counter magic, but when you can flash it back and get a body out of it at the same time?

That said, at least there aren't any colossal mistakes on the order of JTMS this block. The tradeoff of course is that this block doesnt have anything nearly as exciting as the Scars block had.

Jace was so broken. No playtesting needed really to decide that. He was going for $75 each, $300 just for a playset, right before being banned from Standard too. The timing was too convenient before rotating out of standard.
Snapcaster with no flash? No problem. With flash? What have they done!

And now Mana Leak is going to take the bullet for the problems Snapcaster has caused, which sucks, since Mana Leak is the most balanced counterspell ever printed. It's pretty shitty if you ask me.

Well, what can you do. Uncounterable titans here we come!

Anybody else feel like the art on this card was wasted and it should have been used on a cool rare or a mythic?

I was impressed by the art so much. Then I looked at the cmc and read the ability. Such a waste.
Got some righteous blow and gut shot to deal with stromkirk noble now. That vampire ain't gonna see the light of day.

I wish MTGO would update the same time new sets get released for realsies :(

I see why they don't do it but I don't play paper magic often enough warranting collecting real cards.

Creatures... It's dependent on what you draft. Most people draft archtypes nowadays, and it's not as simple as "draft an efficient deck with tons of beaters and fliers". Lands, you can't really go wrong with 16-18. 16 if your curve tops at 4-5, 17 if it tops at 5, and 18 if you have a large number of 6-drops.

The 4-pack sealed tournaments are a fairly good deal in terms of prize support, but they aren't really indicative of the real sealed format... which is very expensive.
I drafting for about an hour on http://draft.bestiaire.org/ to get the gist of M12 and i am most likely way off but it seemed to me that U/W and R/B were real viable drafting combos and yeah i know sealed deck is expensive but i want to do one for nostalgia purposes.

I also did some Avacyn(sp)? i wanna get familiar with the new set because this local place will be drafting that a lot later this month and i am probably way off with this set as well but in drafts, white looks really strong to me like W/R or W/U.

In a bit i am going to attempt a M12 draft on MTGO but i want to check out some more videos before jumping head first but i feel confident enough that i can draft a good U/W or R/B "archtype" deck if i get decent cards and i have almost all the cards worth picking memorized.

My LGS is selling boxes again today for 87 a piece.

To buy another AVR, or to not...

What say you, Magi-GAF?

Magic the GAF-ering?

Just think. That one box could have 4 Cavern of Souls in it.

...or it could have 4 Commander's Authority.

Well, it will very likely have 4 of those lol

Just one Cavern is all I ask! Still waiting for that PM back... ;)

Was looking at older cards just now, and saw this

wall_of_ice.jpg

Wait, what? Wall of Ice is... green?

Green had Wall of Ice, and also had the land destruction card Ice Storm.
A few other ice types also.
Blue got water/cloud/mist but ice was given to green back then.

Good points. I'm actually still kind of miffed at how Wizards treats green. It's got no real mechanics to call its own.

Mana ramp is pretty much Green's mechanic, I'd say. But yeah, I wish there were more evergreen keywords that green could call its own.

I love that green has some pretty varied keywords on good creatures right now, though. Strangleroot Geist with haste and undying, vorapede with vigilance and trample and undying, even craterhoof behemoth with haste. Of course Dungrove Elder with hexproof is super useful as well. Green has some really nice tools right now.

Any good iphone apps out there that are a must. Hoping for free.

Wizards has an official app that has a card database, deck builder, and some life tracker stuff. But adding any new sets (starting with AVR) to the deck builder costs money unless you wanna wait until the next Core Set comes out. So that's kind of lame. But it is free beyond that and works fairly well for looking up cards and whatnot. Though it doesn't include the Gatherer rules clarifications which sucks.

There is a 5 dollar MTG Guide app that seems pretty comprehensive from a looking up rules perspective, but I haven't tried it.

I agree with you, green has some nice tools. But lately it feels like the only thing green has to itself (besides ramp, I suppose) is big creatures for cheap. 7/7 for six mana would have been great 10 years ago, but now it's not really that big a deal. It's barely playable in draft.

Green is a bit hamstrung from the R&D side of things until Primeval Titan leaves the Standard format. There are lots of cool sorcery-style things they have hinted that green can do-think recent cards like Genesis Wave, Praetor's Counsel, Tracker's Instinct, etc-that can't be pushed too far on the power curve without base-green decks doing the very dangerous multivector thing where they can either beat you with one line of attack (Primeval Titan) or, if you can beat that, fall back on some super-efficient midrange card advantage/board control strategy that you can't actually beat.

I play Jace as a 3-4 of in both formats where it is legal and think it is madness not to do so.

Decked Builder is fucking awesome but it's not free. Worth every penny, though. Always updates quickly with new sets, very easy collection management, deck building and testing. I can't recommend it enough. Here's their website...it has too many features for me to do it justice in a forum post, so check it out!

Avacyn Restored was submitted last Monday, and Apple got it up on the app store yesterday. It took me about 15 minutes to add my Avacyn cards to my collection (I had used the visual guide from the fat pack to tally up how many copies of each card I got, though it wouldn't have taken much longer to just flip through the stack). Unlike the official app, new sets are always added immediately for free, and gatherer rule clarifications are in for every card in the game.

Note that when the official app was released, Wizards demanded that Decked Builder remove all deck building components...so the creators changed them to "buy lists." Nothing Wizards can do about that, and testing the buy lists out as decks still works fine. I don't think the actual functionality of the app changed at all.

edit: you have to buy an add-on to save a collection; you get all the deck building functionality for $4, but collections are an extra $3. You're going to want that, so the app is effectively $7.

edit2: I cannot, however, recommend Decked Drafter from the same developers. It's expensive ($3 per set) and the AI is mediocre.

edit3: looks like it isn't a universal app, unfortunately. Separate purchase for iPad...that's the version I'm using, and it's $9 with the collections IAP. Sounds like it's pretty easy to move decks between devices, at least.

I say now that my box days are over I think.
(Though I may still pick up a japanese box here or a russian box there)
Of course I will probably change my mind right after M13 spoilers start to hit

I finally caved because there's enough money cards in it right now that I think it would be worth it.

I put up my cardlist on here: http://deckbox.org/sets/172304

Most of my rares/mythics are on there, haven't added all my uncommons yet. If anyone sees anything they want, let me know :)

Sorting that list by price is disheartening. My cards are worth nothing ._.
I don't know how you do it on there but how you have a sort at the top by cost and color, you should also do by edition or whatever it's called. I know wandering wind has it so it's possible and it's easier to separate the cards and not miss any if you can sort by set, scars, besieged, new phyrexia, etc.

Regarding this.. i just found a free App iMTG that does a heck of a lot of things and also gives you pricing of the cards via tcgplayers.com Seems to have all cards, a life counter, deck builder, Card database etc. Playing with it right now.

Oh hey, the official WotC app isn't even available anymore. Sounds like they broke it with an update and had to pull it. No word on whether or not it will be back or in what form.

Haha really? I know one kid at the shop had it continually crashing and just not working correctly at all.

Yeah, it never seemed particularly stable or fast to me. This somewhat worries me for how DOTP on iPad is going to turn out. Edit: Though presumably Stainless is handing the development instead of whatever internal Wizards people did the app.

I went to Columns, selected Edition, and hit apply. Dunno if that's the default view for everyone or just my local machine though.

It's my current wallpaper. Didn't even know what the card was. Yeah, that card is pretty bad lol.

How so cheap? My LGS sells it for $107 +tax. :|

...dude, just get someone to give you one. Its common, right? :lol

Ya, no one will though. :/

25 cents, Zaraki. 25 cents.
I feel stupid buying a common... I've bought like 8 dark accession packs total too so I sort of didn't care about buying them either in a way. I know I shouldn't have though.

Does that show any differently? Or the same

Yup! Shows edition and rarity now. Thanks!

Ugh, douchebag on ebay trying to scam me. He sold me sea chrome coasts that he listed as MINT and there are spots all over the cards. He agrees to a partial refunds and after waiting 5 days for the refund I contact him asking what's going on goes on a rant of how I'm a scam artist and he's reporting me to ebay... I remember why I hate ebay now.

It is all too easy at times to have an issue buying/selling stuff on Ebay. Thankfully I've never had any probably because I'm very cautious and lucky so far. Always buy from large shops when possible, otherwise look for 100% feedback, good picture, clear description etc. I've even sold a phone, got a PSP on there with no hassle.

Last month I got an M12 Sorin for £1.24 from there. Guy had 100% feedback, and never dispatched the item from what I could see. Opened a case after 3 weeks, and he reappeared, saying he doesn't check Ebay much, and that he had sent the item, but since I hadn't got it, he sent another out that day with recored delivery, which was good of him. The cynical part of me says that he never sent it in the first place, because of the low sale price, and only did because I filed a case against him. But he met all my other criteria, so it's pretty unlikely.

Ya, it was a guy who had like 98% and like 100-something feedback. I'll just stick to the higher sellers I guess.

Yeah, fuck eBay. I stick to Reddit and here for trades and I'm doing all right. Although, I am dealing with this OnPoint guy who is asking for nude pics of myself before he'll ship my cards. I mean, I'll do it, but it seems excessive...

Venfayth, are you looking for anything in particular?
