What do you feel about the word Nigga?

I don't care if this is a dumb question, I'm asking it: For those of you who are black, how do you feel about a non-black person saying "nigga" when it's part of singing along to something?

I'll admit that while 99% of the time I never say (or even consider saying) whatever form of the word, I totally say it when I'm singing along to a song and I'm alone. I've always wondered what would happen if I were out singing karaoke with a mixed group of friends, I was singing a song, and that word happened to come up as part of the song. *laughs*
Just do it.

Nothing annoys me more than having a friend butcher a song with self censoring.

I personally don't give a shit. Words don't mean anything to me. It's the meaning and context behind their use that matter.

If someone is taking a baseball bat to my skull while saying "I love you!" it doesn't make the words calm, warm and soothing.

It depends on the person. I won't scowl at someone who uses it in that context, but it'll definitely come off as unnatural to me.

THIS! This is why I asked... Thank god that it isn't offensive.
Can we use it here?

You're calling them uptight for not necessarily being cool with me just opening my mouth and saying whatever slur I feel like? I'm cool with all kinds of people but just spouting off slurs is not how I roll. Doing it in a group ensures that they're even less likely "to be that guy" who calls me out. Swallow shit or ruin the afternoon. I'd rather not put someone in that position, since I have been. It's not fun. A lot of people don't like talking about how certain words truly affect them thanks to the idea that they're "oversensitive" or better yet since you said it "uptight."
If somebody is oversensitive, then it means they are more sensitive than they should be and thats not my problem. Dont get me wrong, I'm not an offensive person by nature and its rare that I every say 'nigga' but when I do, I'm quite confident the people I'm around aren't going to be offended by it. Know your audience and be sure to leave no question in somebody's mind the context you used a word or phrase in if its something you think can be used offensively. The same can be said for many words in the English language like 'stupid' or 'asshat' or something. I guess I've just always had an instinct for knowing when something is appropriate or not. Perhaps I'm not used to lacking that instinct.

Tbh sometimes my friends and I answer each others phonecalls with "Yo, sup nigga" but we only do it because we're pretending to be tough.

Sorry. :(

I don't use it. I don't really mind when people use it so long as they're not awkward or trying to act like idiots.

I'm black and I rarely say outside of if I'm sayin' lyrics or something like that. idk if other people say it, for me a word only has as much power as you give it. My non-black friends tend to not use it out of respect and since I don't use it unless they're singin' lyrics or quoting something.

I don't say it. It's kind of fucked up how the word has become part of everyday language for so many people of different races. What really sucks for me is that I listen to a lot of hip hop and it's pretty hard to avoid.

My biggest beef with the word is the argument that "nigga" is a word of empowerment. I believe it's stupid and hypocritical to say that a word is empowering when used by one race and oppressive when used by another (even when you're not saying "nigger"). I've never heard anyone say something empowering and finish the sentence with "nigga."

Honestly if you gotta ask yourself if it could/should be said. Just don't. It's a dumb ass word that can easily be substituted by a million different other less offensive words.

I feel it's stupid to use that word nowadays. The word was a negative for the African American race for a long time and now it's used in an ass backwards way. And the youth of the last few decades are just raised with the language.

I'm white I wouldn't use it, though if black people are allowed to use it then white people should be to, anything else is hypocritical and discriminatory

I am almost always* offended by it's use regardless of context and embarrassed depending on context (Namely if I'm in mixed company with black folks saying it)

The word and the word it derives from are both horrible and both need to die a fiery death simply by decision of the majority of smart people deciding not to use them.

*
The lone exception is the old school stereotypical gangsta rapper living in the hood where the word was routinely said. People like Kanye and Li Wayne & Jay-Z need to stop using it since they no longer pretend to be that type if they ever were that type at all. Most people are not so ghetto to know the word has negative connotations amongst all races

It's a word and like most words it depends on the context, but I understand that it's a word with history behind it. Either way I don't use it, except jokingly with my friends on rare occasions.

Fun fact, while it's acceptable to say "black" in English if you say its Portuguese equivalent (preto) in Portugal it's insulting. Honestly I don't even know what the fuck the pc term is supposed to be.

It's at the very least stupid and confusing. It really shouldn't be ok for anyone to use it if it's ok for some people to use it. I'd find it weird if my Mexican friends started calling each other wetbacks casually. The word simply isn't ingrained in our culture like that. Should we also "take it back"? How bout we just admit it's a dumb ass word born from racism and ignorance and let it die and avoid confusion all together. That's my opinion of course.

It's probably racist in some way to feel this way, but you have a Parappa The Rapper avatar - I honestly wouldn't expect you to be racist (just joking/kinda/i don't know). But really, it's not like you said the word yourself. And it's not even that I think your friend is a racist - I just think he used a lame argument.

:lol

I could've done the cliche, "I listen to lots of hip hop," (I do) or the classic, "But I have black friends," (I do) but I felt that's a bit tired at this point. :P

And once more, I agree.

Somebody post that Dutch magazine article about Rihanna. The "golden throat" one.

I'm white and don't use either word.

I personally think it's silly how "nigga" is often said dozens of times per day in a friendly way but "nigger" is one of the most offensive words anybody can say. I understand the difference between them, but I think it's dumb and that people should stop using both words. Especially rappers with influence over others.

I think it's beyond ironic that black people use it

I never say it as I am white, even when my black friend I had a while back said I could. Just feels stupid.

Over all, fucking stupid word?

EDIT

Also picturing Devo use the word nigga amuses me oddly.

The whole "n-word" thing is silly in my opinion though, especially when it comes to the media. Just say it full-out or don't. I'm fully aware of the fact that it makes some people uncomfortable, however.

Fun fact: I've spelled it out in this topic more than I've uttered it in my life. Hopefully that comforts those who think I'm a closet racist or something.

I actually agree with you on this. Louis C.K. does a skit on this (and I'm sure others before him) but everyone knows what you mean when you say "N-word" and anyone who hears that is instantly gonna think "nigger" in their head anyway. It's a sad state of affairs when you can't even say the word in a news piece without fear of offending someone.

I don't think its a double standard at all. Some understand the weight behind it, most don't. My definition of why its offensive is not the same as others. Its not just a "bad word". I've always felt that it was a fucked up, but understandable, way that two people of the same struggle laugh through a hard time.

Sup "bomb bait"
Sup "whore"
Sup "statistic"
Sup "nigga" "nigger" (I really don't give a fuck about the "er" at the end.. its still the same word. The tone applied is always going to be a key part of it.)

You throw it around by itself, yeah, its some shit, but between people from the same circumstances? Not so much. Not that simple at least.
From my own personal experiences, the people that tend to use the word most often are the same people that tend to be most offended when someone that isn't black (or a non-black that isn't a part of their own social circle) uses it.

For people like myself (I'm black btw), the reason we don't use the word is the same reason we aren't offended by it. To me, it's just a word and adds nothing meaningful to the conversation.

I have no problem with the word itself but it undoubtedly causes a lot of unnecessary controversy that I feel is counterproductive to race relations.

I always laugh(inside) when I hear normal people use the phrase 'African American person' instead of 'black person'. It seems much more awkward to me.

Both should either go away (preferred) or made available to everyone. Too much unnecessary controversy + double standard.

Stupid word and stupid double standard. There is a big difference in how it's obviously but if one person can use it as "dude" then they should not be offended or judgmental if another race uses it in the same manner. If the word is so offensive it shouldn't be used period by anyone.
Non-black folks don't get to decide the appropriate usage of the word. It's a historically derogatory and oppressive term from non-blacks. Of course there's a double standard.

I know it's hot right?

nigga and nigger are just an annunciation made easy method for the lazy.
That may be the origin, I don't know, but that's not what it is at all anymore to a lot of people who still do use it.

In their minds the gaps between the two is like a big 'ole river.
