What do you feel about the word Nigga?

I think it's beyond ironic that black people use it

I never say it as I am white, even when my black friend I had a while back said I could. Just feels stupid.

Over all, fucking stupid word?

We need a day where we only use smart words. We'll call it 'Smart Word Day'.

uhhh but brown people aren't black

Agreed. And while I'm personally not a fan of it, usage of the word tends to be granted much more leniency when used by brown people (hispanics usually).

What's funnier is black people have adopted the grammatically incorrect version as their own as of that is an accomplishment. If there is any value to them at all, they should take ownership of the proper name.

Can I say "nigga" if I'm Dominican? I mean, come on guys, I'm so close to being black.

I'm Puerto Rican and say it in specific company at least, like when I'm back in the Bx chillin' with my boys. We all use it in some capacity. At home, nah, never do it, don't need to though. Well, sometimes with my wife maybe in a buggin' out way but not in front of the kids.

From my own personal experiences, the people that tend to use the word most often are the same people that tend to be most offended when someone that isn't black (or a non-black that isn't a part of their own social circle) uses it.

The irony of it is part of why its so common imo.

Non-black folks don't get to decide the appropriate usage of the word. It's a historically derogatory and oppressive term from non-blacks. Of course there's a double standard.

This. There is nothing more cringe worthy than white people butthurt that they can't use the word because black people can.

I heard a bunch of bogans saying that the other day, 'they can use it but if I use it they get pissed off'. As though there is no reason for the difference.

My friends and I call each other racial slurs indiscriminately. Unless we're in public.

Stuff like this I just can't do. My best friend's girlfriend jokingly called me faggot one day and I said to her, straight-up, "Don't ever use that word in my house ever again."

In public/your place, say what you like, but in my house, it's my way or you get the fuck out.

But surely we live in a world of suposed racial equality now, so surely white people have just as much right as black people to decide if its acceptable to use

Like most words, it really depends on context for me. I try not to use slurs with any degree of seriousness while talking to anyone, but I'll certainly say them if they're included in lyrics, literature, film, quotes, etc.

That there are "black people" and there are "niggers." Since his joke others outside of the community have granted him representational status of the entire group and think they can also make such assertions.

I like this guy's defense of it. LOLOLOLOL

Fellow platano, you may qualify for usage of the word 'nigga'. I think it depends on what shade of brown you are. I'm fairly light skinned. :/

I consider myself pretty light-skinned also, though I have been mistaken to be black by others.

I never use it except when quoting it for a specific purpose. Even then usually i'll say n-word.
It's just offensive and i don't care you what color you are you shouldn't use it.

Never heard a white person use either except to quote it. I hear it from black people all the time though

I'm not afraid of using the word in the appropriate conversation. I don't use it as a nickname to any individual.

However, having worked retail for a while, there used to be numerous customers who would use it (mainly at one specific location) in reference to me in discussion without hesitation. I would usually just reply "I'm not a n****r."

words are just words, i dont take any of them seriously.
however, some people do which is why i wouldn't say nigga in public.

Especially since they invented the thing. It's kind of rude that we decided to take it from them.

Black people need to come up with their own word.

I suggest Farglenarb and dare a white person to say it to me.

I AM THAT NIGGA AYYYYYYYEEEE
I don't use it, and it's really awkward when my non black friends use it. They just can't pull it off

It makes me uncomfortable when I hear people who aren't (or at least don't appear to be) black saying it, and I don't care one way or the other about black people using it.

Personally I only use it when reciting lyrics or quotes. Sometimes I say it with my brother in a joking matter, but that's it. Considering I was never brought up in an area where the word was used casually I see no reason to add it to my everyday vocabulary. I'm totally fine with non black people using it when reciting a song or whatnot, but at the same time it often becomes awkward for both parties when used in my presencem :/ however I do feel as though there is a difference between er and am it all comes down to the tendency on the context its used in and er is almost exclusively used as a negative connotation in some way. I get that technically there is no difference, but time and tendency of usage has changed the perceived meanings of the two words.

I have to admit, I'm so conflicted on saying "nigga". I'm black and I often don't really say it (or curse for that matter) except for when I'm writing rap lyrics or reciting rap lyrics. If I'm with a group of other black friends, I'll definitely feel more inclined to use the word, but around friends of other races - it depends.

For instance, my best friend, who's brazilian says the word every once in a while when reciting Dave Chapelle. If we weren't so close with each other and hadn't known one another for the better part of 11 years, it might be a different story. Overall, it's really all about the intent with how you say it. I'm not gonna trip if the word's thrown around occasionally by one of my good friends, but I'd definitely have a problem with just about anyone - not just folks of other races - walking up to me and saying "Wassup Nigga!!" upon first meeting me.

I don't think its a double standard at all. Some understand the weight behind it, most don't. My definition of why its offensive is not the same as others. Its not just a "bad word". I've always felt that it was a fucked up, but understandable, way that two people of the same struggle laugh through a hard time.

Sup "bomb bait"
Sup "whore"
Sup "statistic"
Sup "nigga" "nigger" (I really don't give a fuck about the "er" at the end.. its still the same word. The tone applied is always going to be a key part of it.)

You throw it around by itself, yeah, its some shit, but between people from the same circumstances? Not so much. Not that simple at least.

What's a "bomb bait"? Is that in reference to an Arab? lol Being an Arab myself, racial terms don't really have a place in my vocab. I remember when I was younger, and some guy had called my mom a camel jockey at the grocery store. Nothing you could do as a kid, but growing up, I just had a total disdain for the usage of any racial terms. Be it in jest or otherwise.

Does anyone feel uncomfortable when they hear anyone saying Nigga?

I just shake my head every time it seems. Even when I hear black folks saying it I just mentally reconstruct the star trek facepalm.jpg

All about context, if it is used in a self-aware joking manner without malice with your close-friends then it is fine. I use 'chink' and 'nigga' occasionally and interchangeably with my friends (almost always as a substitute for 'dude'... which I do not like using for some reason :p). I do not limit myself with a highbrow viewpoint to feel guilt or shame when using such words. Anything that has to do with race superiority and social class structure is a joke to me, and I do not take such things seriously. I only condemn people who think they are above others for being a certain race or being raised in a more privileged environment.

PS: I am not White though, so maybe it is easier. ;p

naw, "bomb bait" is how people refer to soldiers out here sometimes.

Is it OK if I say Sand Nigga? I'm Middle Eastern, btw.

I don't say it, I don't like when other black people say it and I sure as shit don't want white people saying it. I've been called nigger too many times by white people to accept them using it as a term of endearment.

sanda nigga? I've never seen or heard that. It's always sand nigger.

what about guido? little known fact: several people were banned for using this word back in the day on gaf. I guess Jersey Shore's changed things.

If I have any problem with the word, its this kind of mentality associated with it. I can understand former black slaves and black people before the civil rights movement using the word and making it there own, but what claim do modern black people have to the word other than evoking the struggle of our ancestors?

And by being so adamantly against white people using the word, you are essentially equating them to the slave owners of the past. Most modern white people aren't slave owners, probably aren't racist, and hold no animosity towards blacks yet when they use the word, they're somehow evoking the will of their (possible) slave owning ancestors.

I just feel that this type of thinking has no place in modern society. Yes we still have racial issue to deal with today but this kind of needless segregation of "its ours and you people can't use it" isn't helping.

I can't use it because I'd look ridiculous.

I would look & sound like Mitt Romney saying it . . . an older graying white guy trying to sound hip and failing miserably.

i don't want anybody calling me their "nigga" and i don't care that you think you can do so because you're black

if you can't call me by my name, then you don't respect me.

Fine, Sand Nigger. I always felt bad that we couldn't get our own insults. All of ours are just cheap knockoffs of other ones. I mean, at least call us Sniggers!
