Star Fox Wii U at E3 by Retro? [Rumour]

SF64 was too easy and had too few levels. Ditch the submarine (I like the tank), add harder difficulty settings, and make some truly difficult levels. SF64 was a cake walk even when I was a kid. I loved it, but it was too easy.

Yes, but given the time period it was in it was a great game. Something like that now I honestly don't see the appeal. I could be wrong but I don't think the market is the same -at least if its going to be 50-60 dollars.

An on-rails shooter doesn't really strike me as a desirable next-generation experience.

Retro can do no wrong though.

All I ask is that it's a cheaper downloadable title unless it has some seriously long single player or fleshed out multiplayer/co-op. The multiplayer in Starfox 64 wasn't that good, no matter what they could do with the levels/online, the gameplay and controls just aren't that great for competitive play to begin with.

Yup.

With their Metroid skills, I'm sure they could do a fantastic job of a Starfox Adventure game, pop a few flying segments in for old times sake and it's sorted.

Am I the only one who liked Star Fox Assault? It wasn't perfect, but if there's a sequel I'd hope it'd build off that instead of StarFox 64 again

What do you mean by "again?"

They've never made a game built off of the foundation that Star Fox 64 made.

The multiplayer was fun, the single player is short and flawed but honestly I enjoyed it, expanding on both of them is a plus for me, they just need to fit in the right amount of SF64 on rails stages on top of improved ground stages.

I wonder whether they'd include ground missions.

The flaw of ground missions in Star Fox Assault wasn't that they were included, but rather that they were ground missions or that they were off rails- it's that they were slow paced sandbox levels with lousy controls. I think Retro can deliver ground missions more in line with what a Star Fox game should be.

And the ability to jump in and out of vehicles made for some of the series' best multiplayer.

Star Fox should be taken out back and shot. It's a terrible IP, there's only one truly great game in the franchise and a bunch of mediocre-to-bad ones, and in Sin & Punishment and Kid Icarus, Nintendo have two other franchises that do very similar things, but better.

Any amount of money or effort being put into a new Star Fox would be a waste.
I love Sin and Punishment, but it's clear it doesn't have the star power StarFox does. Financially it makes more sense to make a StarFox game if Nintendo wants a true rail-shooter franchise around (Kid Icarus is more of a third person shooter).

This is definitely true. All I remember about 64 as a kid was borrowing it and beating it quickly. Fast forward years later and I picked up the 3DS version. Love, love, love it. But I beat it without dying on my first try. In about 1 hour. And I suck at shooters.

Thankfully there are harder paths to give it some longevity, and some of those stages I'm doing now I'm sure I never saw on the n64. Which was a pretty cool idea, I just never bothered before. Those new levels still are not what I'd call "hard" though. So if *someone* is doing a console version, I really hope they're making a TON of levels and a harder default challenge overall (or at least selectable difficulty from the start).

As for on rails not belonging on next gen... Shoot. I'd say whatever's fun belongs on next gen. I don't think "complex" necessarily equates to "better." It's all about software variety for me and I'm sure I'd love a few less involved arcadey games where I'm not trying to figure out where to go, find some widgets, watching 10 minute cut scenes, and all that. Just add tons of levels, new power-ups, customizable ships, online, score attacks, selectable characters, stuff like that. And I'm totally down with that.

New Super Mario Bros sure found a market, after all. So there's room for every style of game.

Not a huge StarFox fan, would prefer another Metroid game.

I'm hoping Metroid hits the 3DS first, personally. Gamecube had 2 Metroids, Wii had 2 Metroids. Time for a break. Plus if it's on 3DS, I'm hoping the odds increase that it ends up being a 2D game :-)

Out of curiosity, why do you always bold the names of games? (It's annoying to look at and doesn't make any sense.)

The reason I'd rather see F-Zero or Retro Zelda over Starfox is pretty much because of that reason, KI and S&P do similar things. That's not to say I dislike Starfox, I love it. I'd just rather Retro not work on it or DKC:R.

Now, as for Monolith made Mother 4...

I would be interested in this if it had an adventure part aswell. Where you get out of the ship. If it's just a pew pew laser game, meh.

If Monolith made Mother 4, likely no one outside of Japan would ever see it :(

F Zero would be awesome. Really wish that Sega team (AV?) was still together because GX was a perfect experience and I want another one, bad. I'm afraid if a new developer touches it, they'll fuck it up by not understanding the nuances.

But someone like Treasure could probably handle Star Fox. Just SF is a franchise that needs to be watched closely. They've got to ensure quality control so they should either handle it internally or give it to a great Dev like Retro to get it back on track. Farming it out to Rare, Namco, etc really hurt its name.

Some of the best games ever are on-rails shooters. One of them is available for five dollars today.

If Retro's game is five dollars then I'm fine with that. I just don't think an on rails shooter like star fox will interest me (or a lot of people for that matter), especially at full price.

Though I'd still feel like they'd be wasting talent on starfox.

I'd rather them work on a new open world DK game (like DK 64) or maybe a Waverace game or something...

Starfox is alright but honestly, it's never been ALL that great to begin with as far as i am concerned...

Yeah, i would really like to see a game similar to Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie or DK64. I loved these platformers collectathons back then.

Most likely false. Star Fox doesn't fit for the type of game Retro is supposedly working.

Because Donkey Kong was fitting?

That's not the problem imo. Retro has enough excellent artists and engineerings to handle any franchise. The problem is how they could revive the Starfox franchise and make it become a smashing hit like they did with Metroid and more recently with Donkey Kong.

It's intrinsically difficult, because the past successes of Starfox were mostly based on technical characteristics. Mode 7, Rumble Pak + 3D. Further, the success stopped on N64.

So, either they do something totally different with the franchise to make it more accessible as Rare did - with questionable results and breaking the formula of the series - or they have to output some serious impressive technical work to impress gamers. Especially if the rumors are true and Wii U is just roughly on par with X360 and PS3.

It is an amazing challenge: will Retro really be able to make people say wow in front of a Starfox game?

I'd hardly call Star Fox something everyone wants Retro to do. Something everyone wants Treasure to do, yes, but not Retro. I want Retro to make a 2D Metroid or DKC for 3DS.

I'm pumped for an actual Starfox revival this generation. It's due.

Online 4p co-op is a must though. I would consider it neat, but optional, to have video of my buddies on the pad while we save the Lylat system again.

For competitive mp, if I can show up in video form on someones pad to spout cheesy Starwolf lines then I'll be a very happy man.

I don't care if Retro does it, just want it to be a serious attempt at making the franchise relevant again. I do want Retro to make a new 2D Metroid, thought that's what everybody wanted.

Dude. On rails shooter sound so boring. Give me a bald space marine anyday as long as I have the freedom of movement and choice.

Movement and choice of which enemy to attack/which weapon to use are usually a lot more important in a rail shooter than in 3rd person shooters.

I'd rather have Retro doing something else than starfox.

Not that starfox needs to die, but, there are a lot of other devs that ip can be outsourced to.

Inside sources man...how do they work.

Inside sources says they're working on a game to that would target PS3/360 owners

Fixed. I would rather see what Retro can do with HD hardware. If they can do something as beautiful as Metroid Prime and Donkey Country Returns, i want to see what's next with more powerful hardware.

To be honest, while admitting I'm not the biggest fan of the series, Sta Fox's cast of characters is NOT its problem.

They're charming and memorable and it wouldn't be Star Fox without that goofy cast.

I agree. The series scores a point here.

The best for the franchise - and particularly to make it impress gamers - would be to make it a treatment a-la Pixar. As I said, this will be hard if Wii U is just on par with X360/PS3, though Retro showed they are able to compensate with artistic design.

Yes, but I wonder how this will be useful if it is not a launch game and with the successor of X360 coming next year.

Did DKC:Returns really wow anyone? It sold like hot cakes, but there was nothing different about it. Very much the DKC formula and people loved them for it.

Same thing could happen to Star Fox. Just great artistry and horsepower can provide the "wow" factor, but even if there's not, retro revivals like NSMB & DK Returns still succeeded tremendously.

For those saying "I don't want Star Fox to be an on-rails shooter," I just have to scratch my head. STAR FOX IS AN ON RAILS SHOOTER! Maybe you just don't want a Star Fox game? Because that's like demanding in a new F-Zero that Captain Falcon gets out of his car between races and has a gun and shoots people and shit.

As for Retro, yes they're talented. Some people also overestimate them, based on their ONE great Metroid Prime game. But other than Metroid, what have they done? They've made a 2D Donkey Kong and (I think) the retro tracks for Mario Kart 7. So, something like a "retro" Star Fox rail shooter wouldn't be beneath them. It would actually FIT them.

I don't recall ever wanting Retro to make a Star Fox game. Treasure? Yes. Retro? No.

If we have to take Retro's word literally and go searching for a game that everybody wants them do develop, the obvious answer is Metroid Prime IV. Especially after Other M many people were screaming for let Retro handle the franchise again.

Another thing many people - including me - wanted Retro to handle is The Legend of Zelda series. This also is true - many people wanted a big change. Especially after Skyward Sword - which was very good, but still too much linked to Ocarina of Time - many people wanted a radical change. And Retro was cited. A lot.

But Starfox??? Who wanted it to be treated by Retro? I also don't recall that.

My sources tell me this is true, and Retro's reimagining is very story focused. It's heavy inspired by EVA, especially the last film.
