is Terminator 2 the greatest action movie of all time?

Forreal, Wachowskis don't belong up there AT ALL. One good action movie and one good live-action cartoon.

Matrix sequels had way too much ugly ass CGI. The highway shootout was nice but the burly brawl for example is horrible.

Michael Bay.
Whedon is Cameron 2.0. Bigger, badder and faster. Just look at him! He doesnt even need Cameron's shitty tech.

Cross-posting as this looked more apt for this thread.

It is, but that doesn't change that fact that he handled the action in Avengers incredibly well. Chris Nolan could learn a lot from him.

And with that you cement yourself as utterly deranged.
No, its just you confirming your over-sensitiveness to anything Cameron that you fail to realise the inherent sarcasm in my post. You do realize that I was responding to Michael Bay as one of the best action directors, right?

Broheim, drop your sword broheim. No one is really insulting your God cameron here. Just drop it.

who is Chris Nolan? Who is Whedon? Is he the guy from that tech tv show? He makes movies now?

So could Michael Bay. Although, to be fair, Michael Bay could learn a lot from a Directing 101 class.

Forreal. All Joss Whedon made prior to this was some shitty tv shows. His training was nothing, his will was EVERYTHING.

Not even close.

Aliens
Die Hard
The Matrix
Heat
The Terminator
Predator
Top Gun

and a lot of others are better.

Though I will say the big rig vs. motorcycle chase through the LA river is one of the high points in action movie history. That sequence is in the top 5 of all time. But the movie on the whole? Eh.

Greatest action movie that has more than action.

Good science fiction. Emotionally ending. Cool villain. But there are better movies for pure action.

Die Hard, btw, takes second place in this category.

This discussion would be more interesting if we narrowed the scope of 'greatest' to 'greatest of the late 80s/early 90s' since production values and budgets have skyrocketed. I hate seeing a 1991 film get compared to a 2005 film.

Insinuating that production value and budget make a movie great.

They certainly help, but as you can see, no one has mentioned a newer movie as the greatest of all time. Some may even argue that all that flashiness has diluted the quality of plot.

The last act is still awesome but I feel like the overall movie gets a bit duller each year.

Definitely wouldn't say it's the best Arnold or even Cameron action movie, let alone the best in the genre.

I still really need to see The Raid.

Avatar's final battle still reigns supreme for me. As soon as the bomber full of explosives went down I instantly had a huge grin on my face.

My rank would go:

Die Hard (best of the 80s)
T2 (best of the 90s)
the Matrix (fuck it, it's better than ever action movie from the 00s, even if it did come out in 99)

honorable mentions to aliens, predator. but die hard... the sheer quality of this film cannot be overstated. everything about die hard is action perfection; the problem with T2 is that you never think that arnold or john are ever in danger because arnold is just so badass. that and the kid is annoying as shit.

in die hard though... bruce is a vulnerable badass. plus, great set pieces, great shootouts, tension, suspense, a fantastic villian, and some of the most memorable side characters ever to grace film. die hard is probably the funniest action movie evar, so it's got that going for it too.

the matrix is pretty good also.

The money-shot for me was when Quaritch hopped out of his dropship in a fucking Mech. And the ship just lands right behind him.

This Whedon talk reminded me that we're probably not gonna see much more practical action set pieces from movies these days. Shooting CGI heavy action is probably a lot easier than shooting practical action.

Casino Royale was probably the last great practical action movie. And it was amazing - really hope Skyfall can match it.

edit: just noticed mention of the Raid, definitely gonna have to see that.

Skyfall has the potential to best Casino Royale in every single facet....................except action. Mendes is no Martin Campbell.

I imagine when your location damage is going to be extreme it becomes cost effective to do all CGI. Shit got blowed up good in Avengers. Not to mention getting a camera up a 30 story building to get a shot probably isn't very practical when you have 5 other scenes to shoot.

Tough to see any action scene in any subsequent Bond flick beating out Casino Royale's opening chase scene. That was just majestic.

I don't think that sequence has been bested by any blockbuster in the 6 years since it came out.

Probably the most dope action sequence in a major movie in the past 10 years. Real talk. I can't see any future Bond topping it.

Man, only one mention of Heat...

Michael Mann is in my opinion one of the best directors when it comes to action sequences. They aren't spectacles, they are just well edited, acted, and directed (and the fucking audio people!) sequences of guns firing and people dying set in a realistic scenario.

The only problem with it was the opening sequence was too good.
