is Terminator 2 the greatest action movie of all time?

I don't think that sequence has been bested by any blockbuster in the 6 years since it came out.

Probably the most dope action sequence in a major movie in the past 10 years. Real talk. I can't see any future Bond topping it.

I agree Casino Royale is second best, but Avatar final battle > *

Disco - completely agree. When Quaritch starts barreling through the exploding gunship and leaps - the ship exploding overhead, before crashing down followed by the ship behind him in a flaming heap, absolutely amazing.

Since when is Heat considered an action movie? I'd classify it as crime drama.

BTW am I the only one that feels indifferent to Casino Royale's opening sequence? Keeps getting mentioned when a topic of this sort pops up. Call me crazy but I wasn't much excited by it. The part on the crane is a bit too ridiculous mostly because of the movie attempting to make me feel like Bond is in any sort of danger. Honestly I like CR for reasons that have nothing to do with any of its action set pieces.

A better question is who are the best action directors of all time? And I mean balls to the wall action.

1. James Cameron
2. John McTiernan

3. Ridley Scott
4. Michael Bay

I love Casino Royale, but not the opening action sequence. It's fun but forgettable.

The Bad Boys movies are pretty terrible. There's some "so bad it's good" appeal I guess.

Way too much Hollywood talk in here...

I think most people are considering martial arts movies a different (sub)category.

Anyway, arguing about which great classic action movie is slightly better than another is kind of pointless IMO, everyone has already seen all these movies, I'd rather hear about some underrated/lesser known action movies.

Whedon is Cameron 2.0. Bigger, badder and faster. Just look at him! He doesnt even need Cameron's shitty tech.

Cross-posting as this looked more apt for this thread.
I'm just going to assume that this is the greatest joke ever told.

T2 annoys me with its neutered glossy Hollywood feel, that fucking kid and the thumbs up and the GOD DAMN I can't believe they followed up T1 with that. Where did the edge go?

Still a fun movie though

Predator is still the best. It's got the badass characters, the memorable lines, the pacing, the setting, the villain... it's damn near perfect.

Insinuating that production value and budget make a movie great.

They certainly help, but as you can see, no one has mentioned a newer movie as the greatest of all time. Some may even argue that all that flashiness has diluted the quality of plot.

I don't disagree here. The remake of Pelham 123 is depressingly inferior because Tony Scott didn't know what to do with the source material. But to me it's a function of director skill with contemporary filmmaking tools, not a problem inherent to the tools. I remember watching 'morphing' become a tiresome fad of the 90s after its brilliant implementation in T2.

No contest, whatsoever.

Not that Terminator 2 isn't one of the best, but... THE BEST? Nah. You'd be stepping over some real gems in crowning T2 #1. After Seven Samurai there's The Good The Bad & The Ugly, all the other Kurosawa gems, then there's Indy 1 & 3. A few movies down the line is where you get to the T2/T1/Aliens level.

To the OP, no. It's James Cameron's earlier movie Aliens.

Terminator 2 is the SECOND best action film ever made.

Terminator 2 is the greatest.

Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers make me wish for another crazy Verhoeven-directed splatter fest, though.

I've always been a huge fan of the Indiana Jones movies. Do they count as action or more adventure? Because I've only seen them mentioned maybe twice in this topic and Raiders and Last Crusade are some of my favorite moves EVER

I was eight years old when T2 came out, and I had never experienced anything like it. I even got permission to see it, and my parents were usually very strict about R rated movies. There's just something about it...maybe it's the nostalgia....

....think I'm going to pick up the BluRay.

How is the Blu Ray btw?

Dat CGI

1. Terminator 2. The standard that all action movies are judged by.

2. Aliens. Aliens is the only action movie I've ever seen that left me physically exhausted after watching it. It's a goddamn amazing movie.

3. Predator. I could watch this movie a 1,000 times and never get bored of it. I could probably recite half the dialog from the film right now. The ultimate guilty pleasure movie.

4. Commando. Everything we love about Ahnold, turned up to 11. The action scenes, the cheesy one liners, it's perfect.

5. Die Hard. A classic. Supposedly they shot the movie with an incomplete script and made up most of it as they went along. Has one of the best movie villains ever.

The only conclusion I reach by reading this thread is that "all time" only encompasses things made after the 70s... oO

I'm a fan of many movies 1900-1970, but unfortunately not many of them are great action movies. The Seven Samurai is up there, but honestly I respect it for reasons that aren't completely related directly to the action.

3. The Wachowskis

Everything makes sense now. I don't even see how they could even be possibly mentioned in this topic.

I think it does make perfect sense. It was one of the first action blockbusters! And it's not just 'bout that one. How does a thread like this go 4 pages withouth stuff like Ben Hur getting mentioned?
To be fair, most movies mentioned are awesome movies. But there seems to be a blatant disregard for older material 'round here.

I would argue for it, though I find it hard to argue for individual movies. As a series they are all pretty much awesome but have a hard time nominating one movie.
Well it's one of my all time set of movies. Pretty much 80s action movies rule, and the spillover into the 90s. Last Action Hero, Total Recall, Eraser, etc. You can say the "action star" died in the 90s. Though, Jason Statham seems to be the man right now. The Expendables shows how old the classic action stars are getting.
