I scribbled this.

That is awesome. You picked my favorite part of the whole movie. Whedon didn't give the shout-out to comic books, he gave it to trading cards!!!

Word.

Rourke was terrible. "my boid, my boid". STFU!

Re-watched Iron Man 2 the other day, still find it entertaining. Honestly I thought Rourke did great in the movie, also had a hell of a lot better presence in the suit at the end than cheadle did as war machine.

I always feel that villains in MCU are weak points of those prequel movies. I like to see the development of heroes in their own movies, but when it comes to the "final boss" it always feels lack of tension.

I agree. IM2 actually is a quite entertaining movie, but there are several things I specifically don't feel right.

Firstly, the back story between Howard and Anton. The whole reason for Ivan coming after Tony is because Ivan's father asked for revenge on Stark family before he died. And at the beginning the Arc reactor blueprint with both Anton and Howard names implies that there must be some untold stories back then. (Yeah I like drama things.) But what I got is a sentence from Nick Fury like "Your father did the right thing." and nothing more. All I feel is "Huh? Is that all?" (Yeah I told you I like drama...)
And the War Machine. I really don't like war machine in IM2. It doesn't feel like he cares Tony, therefore it is really hard to buy the "most trusted friend" thing.
(I just don't want to see war machine anymore, neither Iron Man nor Avengers.)

I rewatched IM2 before the Avengers came out and it's worse than I remembered. It's so unfocused.

Didn't mind Rourke as Whiplash. Rockwell was the best thing in IM2, although I wished he had a scene or two where he showed that he's a competent, smart businessman.

I thought his "I can sell guns to Tony Stark's best friend" scene demonstrated that pretty well. Certainly a better businessman than he is a missile designer.

That scene was still pretty much for laughs. I guess I should say that I wished they gave him something to do outside of being humorous. I feel like they tried to do it when he confronts Rourke, but it wasn't as good as say Jeff Bridges "box of scraps" scene from the first movie.

The one thing that ill never understand and will always leave a sour taste in my mouth is the way they handled the hulk. First he goes apeshit on everyone and then he's suddenly able to not only control when he turns into the hulk, but still maintain rationality when turned. All because he's always angry? that totally destroys him turning and going apeshit on the characters moments before.

The first time he turns it was under the influence of Loki.

Choosing to become Hulk vs having Hulk coerced out of him

The earlier movies all followed the same formula with the villains being mirror versions of the heroes. It was a little disappointing even though I liked them all.

He is able to control himself when he turns into the Hulk willingly. When he turns out of anger that is not controlled he goes apeshit.

Saw it again, and tried to make a mental list of all of Hawkeye's arrows:

- regular
- timed exploding arrow
- remotely activated exploding arrow
- hacking arrow
- incineration arrow (burned through one of those flying scooters)
- multi-shot arrow (hits one baddie in the head, it begins shooting other baddies around it)
- grapplehook arrow

Anyone others I missed?

Something else I noticed on second runthrough. After Thor falls from the sky, he approaches his hammer and stops. He's actually not sure if he's going to lift it, not sure if he's worthy. Then the scene cuts somewhere else for a long while, and then eventually cuts to him lifting it, screaming, lighting bolts, the whole deal. There's such a long gap between the two scenes that I missed it the first time.

Looks like the FAQ must be posted again!

I actually liked that they didn't spell this out in the movie, as I've said, for two reasons:
1) It's rewarding if you've seen The Incredible Hulk, because it is very consistent
2) It highlights the bond between Stark and Banner, because Stark believed without even a spoken word that Banner would be able to control it when the time came. Thus the "Has Banner shown up yet?" "Banner...?"

:D

Sam Jackson was casted as Nick Fury because Ultimate Nick Fury was designed to be Sam Jackson.

Terrible choice IMO. Samuel L Jackson more often than not just plays Samuel L Jackson. His lines in the beginning were so damn awkward and he didn't come off as a good commander. Just Samuel L Jackson trying to play a good commander.

A (thinner) Fishburn would've played that role better. He commanded a certain respect in the Matrix without even trying.

Hawkeye's costume needs more purple in the future. I get that the mask probably doesn't work on film, but they gotta get some purple in there somewhere. The purple on his vest looks way too brown. Boot straps, belt buckle, something, anything. And there's really no need to worry about him clashing with Hulk since he's not a giant green monster.

Was reading the designs for Hawkeye in the Art of Avengers. Andy Park, one of the designers, said that he originally wanted to add more purple, but that it really started clashing with the designs. So he based it around Ultimate Hawkeye and tempered the red with purple to have some sense of it. In the end, he said it turned out better as the original costume was a bitch to translate onto the screen.

That entire sequence is miraculous. I'm being hyperbolic, of course, but basically you have Loki quite successfully breaking up the Avengers on the Helicarrier, and then each of them one by one reevaluating what they're capable of and if they can do what is necessary. You have Thor hesitating with the hammer, Banner asking Harry Dean Stanton if he hurt any innocents on his crash into the warehouse, Cap and Stark in their little verbal spar after Coulson's death, and the newly-freed Hawkeye and Black Widow bringing the "red in my ledger" metaphor full circle; all of which culminates with Cap/Stark sort of inspiring one another to figure out where Loki's setting up the portal, Hawkeye and Widow heading out with them without hesitation, Banner deciding to come back on his own, and of course, Thor grabbing the hammer and invoking his power again. Whedon has such a rock-solid grasp on these characters... he did a really admirable job.

My problem is with Black Widow storming Hammer's HQ. Could have easily just drag Hammer along and walk through the guards. But hey, you can't let ScarJo's salary goes to waste right? What a horribly forced action piece.

The worst scene in IM 2 is definitely the Iron Man/War Machine fight. Soooo fucking cheesy. Not to mention Cheadle looked like a cardboard cutout for every scene he was in.

Captain America > Thor > Iron Man > Hulk > BW > Hawkeye

as far as the movie goes

No offense, but you cannot be serious. Cap virtually did nothing in the movie. Completely wasted, got his arse handed to him by Loki, the helicarrier scene where's he hanging from the rope was just lolworthy and his scenes in the final battle...well, the only badass things he did there was on the cop car and the bank scene.

Oh and hitting the grenade was cool, but he was wasted. I wanted to see more of his athleticism and strength in combat and all we got was a 10 second shot of him jumping around before IM swoops down and does the very cool shield blast.

Anyone judging solely on the movie (like I did) and doesn't have Hulk at #1 is watching a different movie than I did.

Yup, Hulk stole the show.

Hulk >> IM >>>>>Thor > Loki >>>>> BW >>> Cap >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hawkeye. ((this isn't influenced by my hate of Renner or by my hate of the changes they made to HW. Seriously. )

I think it would have been a problem keeping Hammer secured and obedient while they did what they had to do in there. At least by leaving him where he was he was effectively under lockdown.

Back to the Avengers - one thing bugging me is that Happy is nowhere to be found, even though he really should have been there with Pepper in the plane near the end. I hope Favreau not directing anymore doesn't mean Happy is just wiped from existence or recast.

All the massive disparity in people's rankings of the different characters is demonstrating is how fucking good this movie is

Okay fine I'll rank:

Cap>BW>Thor>Hulk>Iron Man>Phil Coulson>Nick Fury>Maria Hill>Alaxander Skarsgards Dad>Craft Food Servies>Hawkeye.

my rankings were based on their clothes

cap old school styled civvies > mother's drapes > red/gold suit > naked > all black everything > hawkeye

Yeah, but what a sequence it was. There were tons of "hell yeah" moments and laugh out loud moments, but Cap running and jumping through the street was what gave me the biggest smile.

I agree, though, more of that next time.

Cap was pretty good during the NYC battle scene when he was with BW and Hawkeye. Also he figured out what SHIELD was doing before Tony did and became the leader when he started giving out orders.

Movie:
Hulk>Iron Man>Black Widow>Thor>Hawkeye=Cap

My actual preferences:
Iron Man>Hawkeye>Thor>Black Widow>Hulk>Cap

I present this by way of reaffirming that Ruffalo knocked this one out.

Heh. Still don't know why they changed Cap's suit. Was perfect in TFA.

Yep, he needs more solo time to show off what makes him such a boss and why he's the leader of the Avengers. This movie didn't really give him that opportunity.

Cap was pretty good during the NYC battle scene when he was with BW and Hawkeye. Also he figured out what SHIELD was doing before Tony did and became the leader when he started giving out orders.

The scene where he gives orders felt shoehorned in. There was nothing to show why they decided to have him as leader or why they needed him to give them orders, IM felt more like the leader.

The same scene was also lolworthy as they were surrounded by the enemy, but the enemy ecided to take a break until after all the orders had been given.

Cap didn't feel like the leader, they need to show why he's considered the leader of TA in the sequel/Cap 2.
