Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

NCIX has 14 Asus GTX 680s in stock...... I'm tempted to just buy 4 and get some after market water blocks......

EDIT: nm. why the fuck are they $100 more?

That's not a bad call, I'll give it a think.

I'm still keen on the 690 but I was originally told the 4th, when that rolled around I got pushed back to today and today I hear 'maybe the 16th' so I called time on the date carousel. I'll see if I can deal direct with EVGA from the UK somehow, but I'll wait till the 'burned fingers' feeling wears off a bit.

Yeah, definitely go for two 7970s. Swapping to the 670/680 isn't really a good move ATM. At most, I'd say swap when GK110 drops. My 7970 CFX rig rocks at 1080p/120hz BF3 MP. Will possibly pick up a 3rd if I can find a reference MSI model for a good price.

I got my evga 670 today, I think it has a defective fan :(.

It is incredibly loud, sounds really bad. Almost like a ticking vibration sound. I guess I need to start the rma process.

*EDIT*

Fixed it, I was in a rush to install before work this morning. When I opened it back up I realized the awkward positioning of the power connectors were making contact with a case fan. Did some cable readjusting and it is as silent as ever.

Just placed an order for a 690. (will be delivered within 3 hours)
I will wait for 690 quad-SLI benchmark/review/analysis and if things look good, will consider adding a 2nd 690 for a quad-SLI.

Are there any reviews out there or... Specifications for the ASUS 690 GTX? I'm about to pull the trigger on them since they're available but... I need to know more about those cards.

So I was testing my evga 670 in battlefield 3 and my nvidia drivers crashed. This happened two times when exiting the game and one time during a load screen. Precision x had the temps up to around 83ish during a heavy load. I also noticed load screens were much longer than before(around a minute or longer) I did not see any artifacts while playing.

Im not really sure what to do about this, I completely got rid of all traces of amd drivers. I'm starting to think it is my power supply.

Specs
i5 2500k @ 4.2 ghz
EVGA 670 w/ driver version 301.34
8gb ddr3
Corsair 520w psu(I was told it would be enough by quite a few people, ran my 5850 well enough as well)
corsair m4 ssd

Thanks for any help guys.

Sounds like its a defective card, your power supply shouldn't have anything to do with the card running all the way to 83 degrees. You will probably have to RMA it.

Is a 520W psu really enough for a 670 though? I thought I read somewhere it alone takes more than half of that.

I ask cause I wanted to get one and I have 550W

Drivers just crashed again immediately after exiting path of exile beta. It was near 80 degrees as soon as the gameplay started.

While 80 degrees is warm, it shouldn't be causing crashing. Most modern video cards can run well into the 90s before artifacting/crashing. Obviously that's not good, and obviously lower temps (lower than ~90 and your ~83) would be better. But I don't think it's temps that are causing your crashes. Just a hunch.

Both the 690 GTX from ASUS and EVGA should be the same right? nVidia did tell both manufacturers to stick with reference design..

All 690's are the same regardless of manufacturer. Nvidia is not allowing any vendors to do any changes to the card. So one 690 from one company is the same as another 690 from another company. The only company so far to get away with ANYTHING is Gigabyte and the only they did was add a Gigabyte logo on the card itself, which according to Nvidia this was a no-no.

Do you think its could be an insufficient power supply or faulty card? Also, is there a better way to monitor gpu temps then alt tabbing and looking at precision x?

Number 1, set up a fan profile. Your card is running way to f'n hot. The 600 series cards have a built in mechanism that throttle's back performance when you hit 70c on the GPU. 70c alone does not do too much, but as it gets hotter it DOES throttle back the cards performance and with the temps you are telling us, it could be causing a crash even though it is not at it's max thermal level yet.

A good fan profile keeps temps in check. My 680's in SLI with a +100 offset, +400 to the memory never hit higher that 68c with a 1:1 fan profile which means when the GPU is 60c, the fans are at 60% and it scales with the temps. And this was after a hour or 2 of BF3, 10 runs of Unigine and few runs of 3dmark11 which these 2 benchmarks at highest setting really stress the cards out.

Yes. Go into precision and click on the gears icon at the top. Under monitoring you can click on whatever you want to be displayed on the screen. For example, I have it showing me Power Usage, Temp, Fan %, Core Mhz.

If you need help, let me know I will be up for a while.

Thanks to you and everyone else trying to help. I will run some more tests throughout the night and post what happens.

Do you have to have an EVGA/Nvidia card to use precision X or will it work on any card? Is there something to display temperature hud overlay for AMD cards?

I too desire a better way to check my GPU temp then quitting the game and pulling up GPU-Z or whatever ASAP

Yes, Nvidia card, but it can be made by anyone. Precision X was made by Evga, but works on all Nvidia branded cards regardless of manufacturer, so you will be able to use it on your card..well at least if it is Nvidia.

Just did a quick play of The Witcher 2

I played with everything on the highest except for ubersampling. The card was hovering around 80-85 degrees while playing and maintaining 60fps. No artifacts during gameplay, but the drivers crashed moments after exiting the game.

The drivers also crashed again as I typed the message. Red squares(artifacts?) popped on my screen before the crash. My card idles at 40 degrees, matching the tomshardware chart.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-670-review,3200-13.html

Ive only had one crash with a game loaded so far, and that was on a loading screen. It seems to consistently crash after the game is closed.

I'm pretty sure your card is overheating. I had a 295 GTX that was hovering around 80c just playing FFXI and sometimes I would just crash. I wasn't even running SLI mode. I know lots of people like evga but i hate them. That reminds me, I bought a 9600GT evga for a friend and he would constantly crash in WoW because the fan wasn't working right.

NCIX USA just put up the Asus but it's not in stock, I'm betting it'll come out next week at the latest. If anyone is looking for the gigabyte still, can order it here http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=GA-670OC2G . They take about a day for delivery so if you need it quick I suggest rush processing.

2x690 gtx

Did you check if you can actually run quad sli?

Just read a german report that they wanted to try quad sli on those cards but for some reason they only got triple sli. Tests with various games indicated that only 3 gpus are used.

Setup a fan profile when playing any game. Increase the fan speed or something and monitor the temps.

On my old GTX 260, that thing runs hot when I leave the fan to auto while gaming, so everytime i start up Inspector, I increase the fan speed to around 65% from a default of 40% and get decent temps with my overclock.

I just saw the evga 670 SC reviews from toms and anand. The card actually underperforms a 670 reference card while overclocked. Can't believe they're charging an extra $20 for that crap.

Finally got hold of my 7950 today after ordering it two weeks ago. All Royal Mail's fault of course, but Amazon sending £300 of card via an untraceable service didn't help. Looks like it'll be going straight back to them too, having read the 670 reviews this morning. :(

Yeah, sorry about that. I'm an avid AMD supporter, but it is easy to see that the 670 variants easily outclass the 7950. :/

Seems like I ordered my Asus 670 just in time yesterday. Prices at the store I ordered already rose to 445 and 465 euro (from the 419 I ordered my 670 TOP at).

I could order it in germany for €413, but as there is no estimated arrival or delivery time I just can wait until the prices drop.

Noticed the same, it was 419€ earlier. I am now waiting for it to drop at least to 399€, and then might be tempted to order.

So I just had a look on the ASUS facebook page. It seems that it could be available next week. Oneuser is saying the 16., the other one talked to Alternate and he will receive his on monday. (but that could be the non-TOP).

Picked up my two Gigabyte 670 OC cards for €400 each after a two hour drive. Now to spend the rest of the day at family then drive back... torture ;-)

also need to tear down the watercooling and set up a quick open air test setup tomorrow in order to be able to fit them.. and do some mother's day cooking :p

Awesome, hope the cards have a good availablility so that the prices go down a bit quicker.

Sweet, congrats! Now you'll really be able to take advantage of that 120hz monitor with 120+ frames! Oh wait, what's that you say?

:p

got 301.34 installed on my 560....runs very well so far, increased performance in BF3 and Skyrim.

DX11.1 support!

I've been using 301.34 for a few days now. Seems more stable than 301.24.

I'm only showing DirectX 11 support though.

Edit: Funny thing happened when I installed 301.34. When I shutdown, Windows 7 shuts down, but my PC stays on. I have to hold the power button for 5 seconds to shut it off manually. Pretty strange.

Can anyone with a single gtx680, a 3D capable monitor, running (non side scrolling games) dolphin games in 1080p 3D, tell me how well they run? I'm trying to get 60fps in 3D with my passive set. I'm using a single gtx560 right now and I can barely go over 25-30fps in 3D.

*update on my crashing evga 670*

I setup my fan to run faster when the temps start to rise and the card didnt go above 65 degrees my Witcher 2 test. The drivers still crashed, this time during the game and red squares popped up right before it happened.

Probably time to rma it.

iirc you came from from an AMD card? Try it on a fresh install of windows (create a new partition or virtual HDD if you don't want to format)
