the world's first best-selling 4" smartphone.

Well they can say that no matter the size they release it at, iPhone is the best selling smartphone on the market by a huge huge margin.

I have no idea. I really can't see it being a genuine issue until you get to something like the Galaxy Note and I assume that's designed with that fact in mind (I've held one but not used one so I'm not sure).
At a point, it is true. I can't go diagonal to diagonal on a Note and I have big hands. Thing is, I can't imagine that ever being an issue in normal usage.
A lot of people buy iPhones because they're iPhones. They could be 1". They could be 7". It doesn't matter.
Look at which non-iPhones are selling well.
I have no idea what the "official" stance on it is, but I've heard it parroted by fanboys before. Stuff like "Anything larger than 3.5" is too big for your thumb to reach!"
Yes, but so "the market has spoken" is bullshit, yes?
Not necessarily. Because of Apple's brand equity factor, I consider the Android market to be a more reliable proving grounds for new smartphone features.Yes, but so "the market has spoken" is bullshit, yes?
I believe when they are saying that they mean the size of the phone, you could easily increase the screensize without making the phone bigger which would be perfect.
You have to consider that if Apple kept the iPhone screen ratio at 3:2 than it'd be considerably wider at 4.3" than your standard 16:9 4.3" Android phone. The phone would have to have a really bulky feame at 4.3 inches to be unreachable to the common thumb.
Well IF Apple increases the size of the screen it surely will be because "the market has spoken"
I have a 4S but I have to admit the Galaxy S2 is a good size.
I don't think they'll ever move on from it entirely.3,5'' is too small, good for them that they're moving on from it. Will be interesting to see how the size affects the design/look though.
The market can't have spoken when the top selling smartphones are dominated by 3.5 inch screen phones. That doesn't make any sense.
Same here.
My GF has an S2 and I love the size of that screen.
My 4S looks puny in comparison.
iLounge reported on a 4-inch iPhone 5 last week and said it would be 10mm taller, 2mm thinner, and retain the same width.3,5'' is too small, good for them that they're moving on from it. Will be interesting to see how the size affects the design/look though.
So the 4"+ is actually a variant? They should call it "iPhone MEGA"I don't think they'll ever move on from it entirely.
That one dude's girlfriend has a bigger dick than him. Haha, that's silly!I'm reading this thread as a penis size discussion. It is much more entertaining.

It's going to be interesting to see where this company heads now that Jobs is gone. I'm perfectly happy with my phone size. I have an ipad when I want a tablet...I don't need a phone that's trying to be both that barely fits in my pocket and has a 3 hour battery life.
I think the iPhone 4/S will go the route of the iPad 2 as a cheaper option, on the side. Assuming they're really going with 4-4.3".. A lot of people love their 3.5", I can't see them killing that off entirely. So the 4"+ is actually a variant? They should call it "iPhone MEGA"
it's a play on "nano"
That is bogus. No way they change the aspect ratio as drastic as that iLounge rumor is saying.. I think they have many options in front of them and certain models/prototype ideas are getting leaked.iLounge reported on a 4-inch iPhone 5 last week and said it would be 10mm taller, 2mm thinner, and retain the same width.
3.5 InchesEven if they did, it's clearly untrue for average people. Certainly, the blanket statement that "human thumbs can't reach that far" is irreconcilably moronic. I have no idea where that meme originated from.
Thoughts and Observations Regarding This Weeks iPhone 4S Event, Written Almost Entirely Before Wednesdays Sad News, But Which the Time Has Come to Publish Because Life Goes Ondcurtis said:I've been wondering why Apple chose to make the iPhone 4's screen 3.5-inches when other comparable phones with Android and Windows Phone 7 have larger, more inviting screens. When you first see a phone with a 4-inch or larger screen, it seems like a much better experience. I thought it was a technical decision, and it could be, but since switching to an Android phone a Samsung Galaxy S II, the best Android phone you can buy, anywhere 15 days ago, I have realized another huge downside of larger screens: when holding the phone with one hand, I can't reach the other side of the screen with my thumb.
Touching the upper right corner of the screen on the Galaxy S II using one hand, with its 4.27-inch screen, while you're walking down the street looking at Google Maps, is extremely difficult and frustrating. I pulled out my iPhone 4 to do a quick test, and it turns out that when you hold the iPhone in your left hand and articulate your thumb, you can reach almost exactly to the other side of the screen. This means it's easy to touch any area of the screen while holding the phone in one hand, with your thumb. It is almost impossible to do this on the Galaxy S II.

This is an example of one of those design decisions that you don't usually notice until you see someone doing it wrong. It's one of the things that makes Apple products Apple products.

WHAT MORE COULD YOU HAVE WANTED IN A HYPOTHETICAL IPHONE 5 TODAY?
A 4-INCH SCREEN? What sign has Apple ever given that it will ever change from the one-size-fits-all 3.5-inch screen? Every single iPhone and iPod Touch ever released has had the exact same size screen.
Now, maybe you would prefer a 4-inch screen. Or maybe a 4.5-inch screen. And maybe someone else would prefer a slightly smaller 3.25-inch screen. Thats not how Apple rolls, especially with iOS devices. There is no doubt that some people would prefer a bigger screen. But nor is there any doubt that many other people would not. I wouldnt. I like to see things get smaller, not bigger. Bigger is not necessarily better. Apple decided on the optimal size for an iPhone display back in 2006. If they thought 4-inches was better, overall, as the one true size for the iPhone display, then the original iPhone would have had a 4-inch display. Its not like 4-inch screens are harder to make, or use some sort of new technology. If anything theyre surely easier to make, as the pixels are less dense.
One big advantage of a 3.5-inch display: with average-size hands, your thumb can reach any pixel on screen more comfortably while holding the phone one-handed. Judging from my email, many proponents of bigger screens those who are disappointed that the iPhone 4S doesnt sport a 4-inch display see no such trade-off. Bigger is better, period, they say, and anyone who says otherwise is in denial that Apple is falling behind its competition. But by that logic, 5-inch screens would be better than 4-inch ones, and 6-inch screens better still. Thats silly. Bigger is not necessarily better for handheld/pocket devices...

Don't upgrade?
That's what it is huh? Personally, I still feel that 4" is too big. If the iPhone 5 has a 4" screen, it's less desirable to me. It's not thumb-related I should say. It's simply the fact that I don't want to carry around a large phone.
It's going to be interesting to see where this company heads now that Jobs is gone.
Exactly. I don't see why this so hard to grasp. Screen size directly impacts the overall size of the phone. I'm worried about the latter.
Is 1280x1920 on a 4" screen even possible now?Don't forget it has to be 1280 * 1920. There are a million posts on this forum saying there's no way there'll be a size increase without a res increase and a million others saying that the only way that'll happen is if the res doubles, because tripling the original iPhone res is very anti-apple.
