War is light when your squadmates make jokes constantly throughout it. It's literally like being in a saturday morning cartoon at times. And that city being destroyed in 64 was at it's core essence a parody of Independence Day - nothing more, nothing less. It's something I noticed immediately when I first played it.

lol again. Its the fucking delivery whats its important. If the franchise have new games it will never EVER get in the roots of the shitty Assault storyline. Im pretty sure they would even retcon that game if they make any game thats after Star Fox 64 or Adventures.
And if you took seriously command's melodrama your where doing it wrong. The multiple endings was an indication, as it was Dylan Cuthbert saying it was just fun little story where none of those endings actually happened.

There's no M-rated material in the Star Fox series, but Assault did get a T rating. The dialogue and acting is still a little corny, but it is much darker than Starfox 64. and arguably better than Other M: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVaAdEcB8Pk

It seems too detailed and outlandish to be fake IMO lets see some gameplay and trailers at E3 before we crucify this game, we all got really excited about Metroid Other M when it was unveiled and got burned, maybe this game will surprise us after the initial hate it's getting.

You're going to need to be more specific in explaining why those things are serious or dark. I don't find them serious or dark. And I don't believe in your idea that "war for one is never light". Nintendo has a whole strategy series that makes light of war.

According to my source this started off as Kojima's Circumcision game, but after development problems at Konami, Nintendo bought the rights and introduced characters from their own franchises.

People using Assault. It will never happen again. If a new Star Fox game is done it would be most similar to the fun simple story of StarFox 64, not that shit Namco barfed from their mouths.
 
I don't buy this. It just doesn't make ANY sense from a commercial viewpoint. Why waste your valuable Retro resources on these two franchises at this point in the gen?

Then again, Nintendo's done crazier things in the past. We'll just have to wait and see.

I can't believe this is remotely real. I can only see it real if Retro makes coverts the whole metroid world to a Saturday morning show (way more feasible that making Star Fox into a serious sci fi show) and that would destroy any appeal of Metroid (considering it has any after Other M).

It would be fun just for the reactions though.

Soldiers, spies and military personal trapped in a seemingly eternal war, unable to truly die or find piece, within the confines of an obscure, unrealistic blend of time periods, past, present and future.

In reality, they all died in wars fought long ago, and this is their personal hell.
 
Yoshio Sakamoto was so protective of his vision of Metroid that he wouldn't let NOA change "The baby, the baby, the baby, the baby." Now, all of a sudden, we are to believe he would let Starfox into his universe?

Nevermind the fact that we have people seemingly in the know saying Retro is not working on an existing IP.

We also have Iwata saying he wants to target the core demographic with Wii U. It therefore makes absolutely no sense to saddle the team who could probably best accomplish this with a meshing of 2 IPs in serious decline.

Lets also not forget the resumes of those who have recently joined Retro. This doesn't seem like a type of project that they would be interested in developing and cause them to jump ship.

And with all that said, is Metroid anymore serious? Metroid is atmospheric, yes, but never anymore serious than StarFox or F-Zero.

In all seriousness, it's possible that after Other M's relative sales failure, Sakamoto was simply overruled on what to do with the franchise.
 
Then again, its not like Nintendo hasn't done a similar mashup game style recently:

I kind of hope this is true. That sounds kinda neat. Break up the Metroid sections with some nice flight sequences (ala Starfox 64).

Other than the characters inhabitting each others worlds, I don't see what's not to like. The lore from either world really doesn't do anything for me so that might be why I don't care too much. If they tried putting Star Fox in my Zelda, I'd probably flip some shit.

It depends on how good the game is and how good it looks.
 
The backlash from this rumor here makes me think it's true, but anything could happen. It's best to just wait until E3 before people get upset.

I dunno. It's unlikely they would do something like that given his history with the company, and the money he has made them with other recent games. In the end the franchise is essentially his creation. They could just as easily chalk it up to a failed partnership with Team Ninja and move on.

The atmosphere throughout the game is dark. There's a deliberate effort to give the player a sense of isolation. The music is often ominous. And what story is presented doesn't have any humor.

Maybe Retro is just working on the new Adventure Mode of Smash Bros. Wii U :P

I certainly hope this wouldn't be a real stand-alone game. They could do what Nintendo usually does when they want to cross franchises: they provide small little details or game sections similar to another game. Like in Link's Awakening, they have a chain-chomp, a mario looking character, and side-scrolling sections. This works because it's not to extensive and because it was on a fun, not-to-serious portable game. They could do this on a console Metroid game by maybe having Samus in gunship Star Fox-like sections or a Star Fox game with either FPS or side-scrolling Metroid-like sections. Blatantly combining the two series together just wouldn't feel right, outside of Smash Bros.
 
If I'm getting this thread straight, the reason why half of you stand so strongly opposed to the idea of the Starfox characters and Samus meeting up is because Starfox, even when it's serious, is viewed as more of a PG-rated sci-fi comic book style of universe, while Metroid is...dead serious. But I believe that the idea of Metroid as being grimdark is still a fairly recent idea, and one that was introduced by Retro Studios, not the original creators at Nintendo. You can't take the isolation of the original Metroid trilogy as an indication that the series was intended to be seen as Alien the Nintendo Game.

Super Metroid's story, as seen in the game's manual, reads with all the campiness of a Star Wars text scroll:

Broken Peace
The galaxy once enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity. Trade lines were open,
the citizens were happy and the Galactic Federation kept a watchful eye over the planets.
Not long ago, that peace was broken by a startling discovery.

The Dawn of the Metroids
On a routine survey mission of the planet SR388, the crew of a Galactic Federation vessel
discovered a new airborne life form and gave it the name "Metroid." These creatures, which could engulf other living beings and take away their energy, proved to be strong and prolific. After just a few seconds of Beta-Ray bombardment, a single Metroid became two Metroids, and then four. Several Metroid specimens were gathered so that the survey vessel crew could take them to Galactic Federation Headquarters for further examination. As the crew sped towards headquarters, they were ambushed by space pirates from the planet Zebes. The pirates stole the Metroids and took them to their home planet, where the planet- leading Mother Brain created a Metroid force.

Enter Samus
Bounty hunter Samus Aran was commissioned by the Galactic Federation to eliminate the space pirates and do away with the dangerous Metroids. Samus landed on Zebes alone and carried out her mission with speed and precision. After the skirmish on Zebes, a special corps was assigned by the Galactic Federation to destroy the Meroids on SR388. That corps was never heard from again. The Supreme Council gave Samus the job to fly to SR388 and do what the special corps could not do--make the Metroids extinct.

Return to SR388
The Metroids on SR388 were more advanced than the creatures on Zebes. These monsters could shed their skins and grow even stronger. Samus worked deep below the surface and blasted all of the Metroids in her path. Her final victory was against the enormous Metroid Queen. When the queen was defeated, Samus discovered a Metroid egg which hatched before her eyes. Even this hardened bounty hunter could not destroy the Metroid larva. When the larva sensed Samus' presence, it clung to her as though it had found its mother. Samus packed up the Metroid larva and took it with her to the Space Science Academy on the Galactic Federation Space Colony where scientists could study the creature and understand
its special organic structure.

A New Discovery
The Science Academy scientists found out that the energy-producing properties of the Metroid could benefit humankind. Their report suggested that the Metroids may have originally been created for peaceful purposes. Just when it seemed peace and order had been restored, Samus received an emergency directive from the Galactic Federation:

Emergency! Emergency! Return immediately to the Space Science Academy!
When Samus made her way to the research facility, she found the building in ruins and the Metroid larva was nowhere to be found. Out from the darkness came a group of Zebesian space pirates and their leader, Ridley, who had the Metroid larva in tow. The pirates fled to a rebuilt planet Zebes and Samus followed them, resolving to finish them off and save the hatching!

Contrast this with Starfox Command's backstory:

Years ago, a scientist named Dr. Andross became obsessed with controlling the
Lylat System. He launched wave after wave of attack fighters from the remote
planet of Venom and ordered them to strike Planet Corneria -- the heart of the
Lylat System.

However, four brave pilots who made up a squadron known as Star Fox finally put
an end to the doctor's mad ambitions. Andross himself was defeated by the
leader of Star Fox; a brilliant pilot named Fox McCloud.

In the time that followed, Venom became known as a quarantine planet. Due to
that reputation -- and the frequent patrols carried out by members of the
Cornerian military -- it has been years since anybody set foot on the planet's
surface.

But after a period of quiet, Venom struck back with devastating attacks on the
Lylat system. Any and all attempts at resistance were brushed aside, and soon
all cities came under the grip of this new, terrifying enemy.

The occupiers were known as the Anglars, and operated under the control of the
Anglar Emperor. Their headquarters were located in the toxic Venom Sea, a vast
ocean so inhospitable that it was believed no living thing could survive there.

The members of Star Fox, the heroic and famous squadron that had come to
Lylat's aid in her hour of need, had disbanded. Each pilot was living a new
life, and it would prove a difficult task to bring the former team members back
together.

Fox McCloud, the team's leader, was wandering the galaxy with his friend ROB,
a navigation robot that he inherited after his father's passing. Fox used this
time to tie up a few loose ends and also ponder the course his life had taken.

The Cornerian military hero, General Pepper fell ill, and could no longer lead
as he once did. He recommended that Peppy Hare, Star Fox team member and father
figure to Fox, be promoted and given command of all Cornerian forces.

Brash pilot Falco Lombardi lived as a loner. He drifted from job to job,
searching for the same thrill he felt as a member of Star Fox. But his
existance was mostly an empty one...something that annoyed him more than he
would admit.

The technical brains behind the team, and Fox's closest friend, was the good-
natured Slippy Toad. Slippy met and fell in love with a girl named Amanda, and
decided to leave the world of flying and start a new life with his beloved
fiancee.

Star Wolf, the true rivals of Star Fox, continued to be involved in dirty
dealings. Their work soon caught the attention of the Cornerian military, who
put a massive bounty on their heads.

And finally, Krystal. The lone female of the group, she had fought beside Fox
and fell in love with him -- much against her better judgment and professional
concern. Her love was returned, however, and the two promised to remain
together always.

But Fox was quite wary of the danger that haunted pilots in the elite Star Fox
squadron, and he eventually forced Krystal to leave the team. Heartbroken and
ashamed, she fled from Fox and vanished soon after. No one knows what became
of her...

Now, the past has come to haunt them all. Unwilling or unable to face his
former team, Fox has chosen to take on the entire Anglar armada by himself.
Can he do it? Will the team put aside their differences and reunite? All Lylat
waits for the answers...

The B-movie-ness of Samus' monologue in Super Metroid, the "See You Next Mission!" message the end, and corniness of some of the dialogue in Fusion, all of the dialogue in Other M, plus the very, very comic book-inspired art style of Zero Mission leads me to think that this whole perception of Metroid being so "adult" and "serious" stems from the Prime series and nowhere else. But if the only point of comparison people are willing to use is Starfox 64, then sure, the "feel" of Metroid is nothing like Starfox at all.
 
This is the worst crossover idea imo, seriously, who asked for this? It's not that it isn't possible for such a crossover to exist given they both take place in space, but having those characters together in the same universe and working with each other sounds like an abortion. I have no doubts about the games quality (if it's real) given Retro's history, but I will cringe having to look at those groups interacting with each other.
 
Wow. Talk about a bad idea. If there's something that really turns me off is mixing franchises like that. They will need to pull out a fucking perfect game to have my interest.
